Mercedes-AMG C63 a step closer to dropping four-cylinder PHEV
Latest report confirms previous speculation of the C63 reverting to six-cylinders, also with a plug-in hybrid setup, instead of reviving the V8. Mercedes-AMG is reportedly soon to revert to six-cylinders for the C63. Image: Mercedes-AMG With rumours of its move away from four-cylinders continuing to mount, a senior Mercedes-AMG employee has let slip that the controversial plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain in the C63 will indeed be phased-out based on poor reception and slumping sales. No, yes? First mentioned in 2023 following a report from US publication Car and Driver that the 2.0-litre based unit has received significant backlash despite being powerful than the 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 it replaced, an AMG figure head stated that adapting the V8 for Euro 7 emissions regulations had already taken place in response to dealers struggling to shift units dramatic prices cuts. ALSO READ: Mercedes-AMG C63 set to go six-cylinder PHEV route in 2026 According to the most recent report by Mercedes-Benz dealers in the United Kingdom have offered discounts of up to £9 500 (R233 386) on the C63, bringing its price tag to £90 095 (R2 213 363) or £17 525 (R430 536) less than the sticker price of the BMW M3 Competition. 'We could have explained it better' Similarly, discounts in the States have also been enforced, with AMG CEO, Michael Schiebe, admitting to MotorTrend last month that it 'could have better explained' the system before putting it into the C63. 'There are pure V8 fans, and it's hard to convince them of this four-cylinder hybrid technology. It's my job to do a constant review of our portfolio. I'm pretty confident that we will fulfil our customers' dreams in the next two to three years,' he said. The combination of the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and plug-in hybrid hardware has main the biggest point of content with the new Mercedes-AMG C63. Image: Mercedes-AMG Despite Mercedes-AMG debunking the hybrid's withdrawal in a response to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport days after the Car and Driver statement, an unnamed executive has admitted to Britain's Autocar that the setup has 'failed to resonate' with buyers. 'Technically, the four-cylinder is one of the most advanced drivetrains available in a production car. It's also right up there on performance. But despite this, it failed to resonate with our traditional customers. We've recognised that,' the source told the publication. In spite of its combined outputs of 500kW/1 020Nm, 125kW/270Nm more than the V8-engined C63, the newcomer' 2 165 kg kerb mass has been cited as another reason for its slump in sales, with recent evaluations in Europe and the States also criticising the battery pack getting hot at over 200 km/h. Return of six In confirmation with the most recent Autocar report in April, the unnamed source said the plug-in hybrid 2.0-litre will give away to a six-cylinder in the reported form of a 3.0-litre plug-in hybrid modelled on the mild-hybrid configuration that powers the AMG CLE 53. Seemingly not earmarked for a return is the 4.0-litre V8, which will produce a reported 478kW/880Nm with mild-hybrid assistance in the forthcoming AMG CLE 63. While no official word from Mercedes-AMG has yet been made confirming the move to back six-cylinders for its flagship C-Class since the supercharged C32 AMG made from 2000 to 2004, expect possible clearer details to emerge throughout the rest of the year. SA makes history: First-ever green hydrogen qualifications approved
The development of these qualifications stems directly from CHIETA's Vision 2025, which was launched in 2021 and identified green hydrogen as a strategic focus area to drive South Africa's energy transition. Vision 2025 recognised the transformative potential of green hydrogen in powering inclusive industrial growth, supporting decarbonisation, and promoting sustainability. These programmes are the first of their kind in the country, developed to equip learners with critical technical and operational skills needed in the green hydrogen value chain from production and storage to transportation and technology innovation. On 30 April 2025, the QCTO formally approved three new National Qualifications Framework (NQF): Level 4 programmes: The Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) is proud to announce the approval of South Africa's first-ever green hydrogen skills programmes by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO). This marks a major leap forward in building the country's capacity for a sustainable and inclusive energy future. CEO of CHIETA, Yershen Pillay said the green hydrogen economy is not a distant dream, it is unfolding now 'Vision 2025 marked a turning point for CHIETA as we committed to leading skills development for the emerging green economy. This wasn't just about creating Qualifications, it was about future-proofing our workforce and ensuring no one is left behind in the energy transition,' said CHIETA CEO, Yershen Pillay. Following the strategic direction outlined in Vision 2025, CHIETA initiated the development of these programmes in close collaboration with industry leaders, training providers, technical experts, and government stakeholders. The result: three nationally recognised qualifications designed to meet the real demands of a fast-evolving green hydrogen sector. Why Green Hydrogen? Why Now? Green hydrogen produced through the electrolysis of water using renewable energy has emerged globally as a game-changing clean energy source. In South Africa, it is seen as a catalyst for industrial growth, export potential, and decarbonisation. South Africa's rich renewable energy resources and strong chemical industry base place it in a unique position to lead the continent's green hydrogen revolution. However, without the right skills in place, this opportunity could be lost. 'These programmes ensure we don't just talk about a just energy transition, we deliver it. We're building the technical pipeline needed to support a green economy, while opening up career opportunities for youth, artisans, and operators across multiple industries,' said Pillay. The three QCTO-approved qualifications will prepare learners for a range of roles in green hydrogen production, storage, transport, and technology. Learners will be equipped to: Operate and maintain hydrogen production and storage equipment Coordinate technical activities and logistics Monitor environmental impacts and performance of hydrogen technologies Understand safety, regulatory, and industry standards Graduates will be ready for roles such as operators, artisans, maintenance technicians, and logistics professional across energy, transport, manufacturing, and chemical sectors. With QCTO approval secured, Skills Development Providers (SDPs) can now apply for programme accreditation. Once accredited, SDPs can begin offering the programmes, with CHIETA providing strategic guidance and support. CHIETA is also embarking on a national awareness campaign to promote uptake, build training infrastructure, and ensure access across provinces. The goal: create a strong, inclusive workforce ready to support South Africa's green hydrogen ambitions. The green hydrogen economy is not a distant dream it is unfolding now. These CHIETA-led programmes represent a decisive step toward a cleaner, more equitable energy future, rooted in skills development, sector transformation, and national progress.

Court dismisses appeal against Auditor-General report on Tears Foundation's R2m irregular expenditure
Tears CEO, Mara Glennie. Image: Facebook An appeal challenging the findings of an Auditor-General report that gender-based violence non-profit organisation, Tears Foundation made an irregular expenditure of R2 million has been dismissed. It's alleged that Tears CEO, Mara Glennie, made the irregular expenditure. Glennie is now to show cause, by the filing of an affidavit within 30 days, as to why she should not be ordered to pay all the costs of the application. In response to the judgment, Glennie said she would be appealing and that the facts were incorrect as an audit provided to the judge in March showed no misuse of donor funds. The organisation has no links to the animal rescue foundation with the same name. According to court papers and judgment by Judge Denise Fischer, Glennie's financial profile came under scrutiny after the auditor's report raised questions about the payment by the foundation to another company, namely Fireworx Management Solution, which is also owned by Glennie. Tears's argument was that the payment was a loan for a "Joy Cottage project" (a safe-house for abused women). Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ The court found Glennie's explanation for the R2 million payment not convincing and that . evidence showed she transferred the R2 million to Fireworx for a safe house, but then transferred R1.8 million to an interest-bearing Fireworx account while Tears received no interest. Judge Fischer said: 'To my mind, the explanation as to the R 2 million payment is so implausible that it falls to be rejected out of hand. I must and I do accept the opinion of the auditor respondents to the effect that the payment was irregular. 'The movement of funds back and forward and into different accounts seems to me to be unbridled and inexplicable." In response to the judgment, Glennie said she refutes the findings and claimed she believed it misrepresented facts, and will appeal. She further said that no donor funds were misappropriated, as confirmed by their audited financials. "We totally refute all allegations made therein. It is our belief that the judgment, which has been widely distributed and embellished, was not a true reflection of the facts and we will therefore be appealing the judgment," she said. "We are sure that we will be vindicated. For the record, there was no misappropriation or misuse of donor funds as incorrectly stated in the judgment. This is confirmed in the audited financial statements signed off by an independent auditor on March 7. Moreover, all requested documents were supplied to the judge by our attorney despite what was stated in the judgement."
