Tiger Woods' son Charlie claims biggest win of career so far

Independent29-05-2025
Charlie Woods, the 16-year-old son of golfing great Tiger Woods, earned his first American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) win on Wednesday with a three-shot victory at the Team TaylorMade Invitational in Bowling Green, Florida.
Woods, playing in his fifth AJGA event, began the final round one shot behind overnight leader Luke Colton and mixed two bogeys with eight birdies for a six-under-par 66 on the Black Course at Streamsong Resort that brought him to 15 under on the week.
Willie Gordon (65), Phillip Dunham (68) and Colton (70) finished in a share of second place.
After a birdie-bogey start, Woods grabbed the solo lead late on the outward nine with four birdies over a sizzling five-hole stretch. He then built a three-shot cushion with birdies at the 11th and 12th holes, dropped a shot at the 13th but responded immediately with a birdie at the 298-yard, par-four 14th where he drove the green. He closed out his round with four consecutive pars.
Before this week, Woods's best result on the AJGA circuit was a share of 25th place at the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley in March.
Woods has competed with his father in the last five editions of the PNC Championship -- a 36-hole event featuring two-player teams made up of a major champion and a family member -- and last December they finished runners-up for a second time.
The elder Woods has been sidelined since undergoing surgery in March to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon and is expected to miss the rest of the PGA Tour season.

All-Star pitching matchup leads to Giants extra-innings win over Mets

August 2 - Pinch-hitter Dominic Smith broke a tie with an RBI single in the 10th inning, new closer Randy Rodriguez stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, and the San Francisco Giants snapped a six-game losing streak with a 4-3 road win over the New York Mets on Friday night. After blowing a three-run lead, the Giants jumped on Edwin Diaz (5-1), New York's fifth pitcher of the game, in the 10th, cashing in when Smith, a former Met, drove home automatic runner Willy Adames with one out. Rodriguez, who inherited the closer's role when Camilo Doval was traded to the New York Yankees on Thursday, hit Francisco Lindor with one out in the bottom of the 10th, then walked Pete Alonso with two down to load the bases. But he then struck out Ronny Mauricio to record his second save and send the Mets to a fourth consecutive defeat. Ryan Walker (3-4), who threw a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth, was credited with the win. The Mets trailed 3-0 before Alonso ended Giants starter Robbie Ray's shutout bid with a solo home run, his 23rd of the year, to lead off the seventh. New York took advantage of a fortuitous deflection to draw even in the eighth, getting a break when Juan Soto's potential inning-ending grounder right at shortstop Adames instead caromed off the foot of reliever Joey Lucchesi and into left field for an RBI single. Alonso then greeted former teammate Jose Butto with a sacrifice fly, producing a 3-3 tie. In an All-Star pitching rematch of a 2-1 Mets win in San Francisco last Saturday, Ray limited the hosts to one run and four hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out six. Fellow left-hander David Peterson of the Mets was pulled after six innings, having allowed two runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out four. The Giants' runs off Peterson came in the second inning on an RBI double by Casey Schmitt and a run-scoring fielder's choice by Jung Hoo Lee. San Francisco made it 3-0 in the seventh against Mets reliever Ryne Stanek when Lee doubled and scored on a double by Patrick Bailey. Wilmer Flores had a pair of singles for the Giants, who were swept by the Mets in a three-game home series last week. Jeff McNeil had a double for the Mets, their only extra-base hit other than Alonso's homer, as they were out-hit 10-6. --Field Level Media

Shannon Sharpe makes first public appearance since ESPN firing as he presents brother with Hall of Fame jacket

Shannon Sharpe made his first public appearance since his ESPN firing on Friday night, as he helped induct his brother into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Sharpe was axed by ESPN on Wednesday just weeks after he reached a settlement with his ex-girlfriend, who had accused him of raping her in a $50million lawsuit. Despite the settlement, ESPN relieved Sharpe, 57, of his duties almost two years since prizing him away from rivals Fox Sports. Sharpe later broke his silence and accused the network of ignoring his request to delay the announcement until next week - with the Hall of Fame induction looming. Though they did not honor his request, Sharpe appeared in good spirits as he was seen on stage with his brother Sterling on Friday evening. The axed ESPN analyst was seen putting the prestigious gold jacket on his brother Sterling as the duo became the first set of brothers to be in the Hall of Fame. More to follow...

Bryson Stott drives in game-winner as Phillies rally past Tigers

August 2 - Bryson Stott drove in two runs Friday, including the game-winner in the eighth inning, to help the host Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-4 victory over Detroit, snapping the Tigers' four-game winning streak. Starter Ranger Suarez gave up three runs on four hits over seven innings for Philadelphia. The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Gleyber Torres belted his 12th homer of the year 404 feet to left field, scoring Wenceel Perez and Jahmai Jones. Philadelphia loaded the bases in the seventh and pulled within 3-1 when Stott flew out to center field, driving in Nick Castellanos. Otto Kemp then cut it to 3-2 when he scored off of Trea Turner's single to right. The Phillies knotted the game with Kyle Schwarber's single to right field that brought home newly acquired Harrison Bader. On the ensuing at-bat, Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper was ejected when he argued with third base umpire Vic Carapazza, who called him out on a check-swing third strike. The Tigers retook the lead when Perez hit a solo shot to center field in the eighth off of Orion Kerkering (6-4). The Phillies tied it 4-4 in the bottom of the inning with Kemp's double that scored Castellanos from second and went ahead 5-4 when Stott's infield single brought in Kemp. Stott had originally been called out on a throw to first base, but a challenge by Philadelphia was successful. Despite allowing the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, Kerkering picked up the win. Jhoan Duran, who was obtained in a trade with Minnesota on Wednesday, came on in the ninth and registered three quick outs for his 17th save of the season. Detroit starter Jack Flaherty struck out seven and allowed one run and two hits over six innings. Four Tigers relievers were unable to keep the Phillies at bay. Brenan Hanifee (3-3) picked up the loss after allowing Philadelphia's final two runs. --Field Level Media
