Suspension of Kerala University Registrar draws flak
Reacting to Mr. Kunnummal's decision here on Thursday, Higher Education Minister R. Bindu came out in strong support of Mr. Anil Kumar stating that Mr. Kunnummal had violated rules and misused his power. Ms. Bindu said the State government would seek legal advice on the matter. According to the Minister, Mr. Anil Kumar faces no problem in continuing with his official duties as Mr. Kunnummal has overstepped his mandate in suspending him.
'The university Syndicate is the appointing authority of the Registrar. That being so, the Syndicate has the authority to initiate disciplinary action against him. The Vice-Chancellor can bring the issue to the notice of the Syndicate,' she said, adding that Mr. Kunnummal has acted as a tool of the saffronisation agenda to remove the Registrar.
Event at Senate Hall
Ms. Bindu also said that Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar could have stayed away from the June 25 event at the Senate Hall of the university, given the tense situation there. She said the entire incident was part of the RSS attempts to 'infiltrate' the Bharat Mata motif, a religious symbol, into the secular mindset of the people.
Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said the Vice-Chancellor does not have the power to suspend the Registrar. Mr. Kunnummal's decision is legally unsustainable, Mr. Satheesan said. The Governor, who is Chancellor of the university, should behave in a manner befitting his position, he said. Mr. Satheesan also pointed out that the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is yet to comment on the issue.
General Education Minister V. Sivankutty also slammed Mr. Kunnummal's decision to place Mr. Anil Kumar under suspension. While Mr. Kunnummal's action was based on Rule 10 (13) of the Kerala University Act, Rule 10 (14) clearly points out that the Vice-Chancellor is empowered to initiate disciplinary action only against officials below the rank of deputy registrar, Mr. Sivankutty said.
Raj Bhavan's demand
Raj Bhavan is understood to have expressed its displeasure to the State Police over what it has described as a serious 'security lapse' during the SFI-DYFI marches taken out to Raj Bhavan on Wednesday night. Raj Bhavan has also sought stern action against police officers responsible for the alleged lapse, sources said.
Meanwhile, Ciza Thomas, Vice Chancellor in-charge of the Kerala Technical University, assumed charge on Thursday as the V-C in-charge of the Kerala University as Mr. Kunnummal is on leave. She took charge under tight police presence and amid demonstrations carried out on the university campus.
Left-aligned service organisations, including AKPCTA and the Kerala University Employees Union, also staged protests at the university headquarters against the suspension of the Registrar.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A day after the suspension of Kerala University registrar K S Anil Kumar over the Bharat Mata portrait row, the state government and pro-Left Syndicate members came out in support of the official, terming the action against him as a 'misuse of authority' by Vice-Chancellor Mohanan Kunnummal. Earlier in the day, Higher Education Minister R Bindu said Anil could continue in office as only the university Syndicate has the right to take action against him. General Education Minister V Sivankutty also strongly criticised the VC, accusing him of 'acting like a goon' of the governor. Left-backed Syndicate members, teachers and employees held protests at the university in solidarity with the registrar and accused the Sangh Parivar of creating a situation similar to the days of the Emergency. The registrar came to the university premises later in the day where he was given a rousing reception by SFI workers and members of pro-Left university employees unions. The registrar, who was handed over a copy of the Constitution by the SFI workers, left the university soon after. It is reliably learnt that the registrar is likely to approach the court against his suspension. 'The prayer before the court would be to issue directions to the VC to convene the Syndicate meeting at the earliest,' said a source close to the official. Meanwhile, Digital University Vice Chancellor Ciza Thomas, who was given the additional charge of VC of Kerala University owing to Kunnummal's absence, assumed office on Thursday. She was welcomed by pro-Right wing Syndicate members and employees' organisation representatives. The pro-Right wing Syndicate members termed SFI workers entering the university in protest as a serious security lapse.

The ruling National Conference (NC) on Thursday (July 3, 2025) said the Raj Bhavan was interfering with the functioning of the Jammu and Kashmir Information Department, creating hurdles in the approval for the appointment of the Advocate General, and causing delays in returning the 'Business Rules', approved by the Cabinet, for smooth governance in the Union Territory. 'Why is there interference in the functioning of the Director of the Information Department? The office of the Advocate General has been rendered non-functional since the elected government agreed to retain the same Advocate General, originally appointed by the Raj Bhavan, in October 2024,' NC leader and MLA Tanvir Sadiq said. 'The Business Rules, sent not once but twice [to the Governor] by the Cabinet, are yet to receive the necessary approval from the L-G. He needs to walk the talk,' he added. Mr. Sadiq was reacting to a statement by L-G on his functioning in J&K. 'I don't cross the boundaries of governance. I only have control over the police,' Mr. Sinha had said earlier in the day. There has been persistent friction between the J&K government and the Raj Bhavan ever since an elected government took over the reins of the Union Territory in October 2024. The Omar Abdullah government in March this year forwarded the draft Business Rules to the Raj Bhavan for approval. The J&K government is mandated by the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019 to prepare a draft proposal of the Business Rules for the Governor's approval. The Business Rules demarcate the functioning of the Raj Bhavan, the Chief Minister, and the Council of Ministers. The Act grants the L-G power to control the J&K Police, and all the matters related to law and order in the Union Territory. Meanwhile, in a letter addressed to the Raj Bhavan, NC MLA Salman Sagar urged the extension of the traditional Muharram procession from the city's Sheeshgari Mohalla Khanyar to Chinkra Mohalla Habba Kadal. 'I am hopeful that the request will be considered in good faith, and the extension will be permitted this year,' Mr. Sagar said.
