Media bodies urge Centre to keep journalistic work outside the ambit of the DPDP Act
The memorandum has been endorsed by over 1,000 journalists and photojournalists from across the country, the PCI said on Wednesday (June 25, 2025).
Mr. Vaishnaw is the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting; Electronics and Information Technology; and Railways. The DPDP Bill was introduced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
'The concerns expressed in the memorandum were put together by the PCI after a close study of various definitions and provisions of the Act with legal and personal data experts. It was found that the Act comes directly against the journalists' fundamental right to work granted by Article 19 (1) (a) and (g) of the Constitution,' the PCI's statement said.
'In the memorandum, the 22 press bodies located in various States expressed deep concern at the Ministry bringing journalistic work under its ambit, even though it was kept out at the drafting stage of the Bill,' it said, adding that the memorandum was submitted through a senior official of the Press Information Bureau.
The memorandum is part of a signature campaign initiated by the PCI in May 2025 to urge the Ministry to bring about the crucial change in the Act, 'so that it doesn't hamper the work of reporters and photojournalists across print, online, and electronic media', the statement said.

Swapneswar Mahadev temple declared protected monument by ASI
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: The historic Swapneswar Mahadev Temple located on Bankad Fort premises in Banpur has been declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Known for its intricate Utkalian temple architecture, the structure stands testimony to the glorious legacy of early medieval Odisha. The temple, believed to have been built during the 6th to 8th century AD under Shailodbhava dynasty, is situated in the tribal-inhabited Niladriprasad village under Banpur panchayat samiti in Khurda district. "This declaration is not just about protecting a temple, it is about safeguarding Odia identity, heritage, and the spiritual consciousness rooted in our land," said law minister Prithviraj Harichandan in his X post. Harichandan recalled the efforts of his father, Biswabhusan Harichandan, who as the state culture minister in 1977-78 first entrusted the responsibility of protecting the site to the state archaeology department. However, the site remained neglected for decades. The temple's preservation received fresh impetus after the ASI took charge during the tenure of the Modi govt. The process was fast-tracked following formation of BJP govt in Odisha in 2024. The law minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Union culture minister Gajendra Singh Sekhawat, and former culture minister G. Kishan Reddy for their support. Bankad Fort, once the capital of Shailodbhavas, has long remained under-explored in Odisha's mainstream heritage discourse. With the ASI's official recognition, locals hope the site will now receive better protection, infrastructure, and tourism development. "This is a moment of joy for the people of Banpur and Odisha. We have waited long for this recognition," Harichandan said. Apart from Swapneswar Mahadev Temple of Odisha, the ASI has also included the rock shelter of Hazaribag in Jharkhand and Moidams of Sivsagar in Assam in the protected list. ASI has delisted 17 national monuments, sources said.

1 2 3 Guwahati: Assam's Congress Legislature Party (CLP) members on Saturday met governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at the Raj Bhawan here and submitted a memorandum seeking his intervention to halt the ongoing and proposed eviction drives allegedly affecting indigenous, tribal, and erosion-displaced communities. In their memorandum, the opposition members said "The incidents of eviction transgresse the provisions of the Forest Rights Act 2006, the Panchayats (Extension to the Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996 (PESA 1996), Chapter X (Protect Land Rights in Tribal Belts/Blocks) of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation, 1886, Assam (Temporarily Settled Tenancy Areas) Act 1971 and landmark decisions by the Supreme Court." The CLP delegation also demanded that an independent commission of inquiry be constituted for probe into all evictions conducted since 2022, with a special focus on Sixth Schedule districts and tribal belt and block protections. "Direct the Govt of Assam to publish a comprehensive land rights regularisation policy, clearly distinguishing long-settled indigenous occupants from speculative encroachers," they said in the memorandum, added that legal and humane rehabilitation measures must be ensured in line with constitutional morality and India's obligations under the UN Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
