The old Nissan Micra was a 'grandma's car' - but that's no bad thing
The first-generation Micra was a sturdy, box-like thing, as plain as cars come. The second one was much more rounded and funky, Europeanised, even, to the point that it won Car of the Year in 1993 – the first Japanese car to do so.
The third model took the idea ran with it, going more upmarket still, being cutesy and classic, with Bakelite-style interior switchgear and traditional fabrics. It felt expensive, and maybe, to make, it was.
And then came the 2010 disaster: it was a car that felt so cheap and rough that when we said as much, the good people of Nissan agreed. Sometimes, they explained, they would take offence at a verdict and tell us why we were wrong, or why they thought we were wrong, but in other cases a drubbing in the media would give them a way to convince their bosses they should do it differently.
This was one of those cases, and Nissan duly did better with a 2016 Micra that was a markedly decent thing, if not markedly interesting. It went off sale in 2022.
In the meantime, Nissan's rivals had been making superminis that were sometimes great and sometimes fine but fundamentally consistent; at least they were always trying to be the same thing.
Ford made a bunch of Fiestas that each felt every inch like Fiestas. Even now Renault's new Clio is trying to occupy basically the same position as the Nicole-Papa original, as the most chic of the superminis.
All kinds of cars try to retain their core ethos, in fact. If you climbed into, say, a BMW 3 Series today, I think you could probably tell it's trying to do basically the same thing as a 3 Series from three or more decades ago.
But here comes another new Micra. Yes, it's another reinvention, this time as a cute electric car, but, it seems, it's different from previous Micras not only in powertrain but also in character (again). 'Think you know me? Think again,' said the teaser on Nissan's website ahead of the launch. 'It's been a while, and I've had a glow up. Let's meet up soon. You won't believe the difference.'

This shift of mindset won't only apply to facelifted models, or those on an existing product architecture, with Provost insisting Renault has to apply this attitude 'to all projects,' with one of his main aims in the early days of his tenure being to implement this 'in France, in Europe, in [Renault's] ecosystem'. Elsewhere, however, Provost and his team have refused to turn former CEO Luca de Meo's well-defined strategy on its head, prioritising 'value over volume'. Lewis Hamilton has ‘absolute confidence' in Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur
Lewis Hamilton said he has 'absolute confidence' in Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur after it was announced the Frenchman had signed a new multi-year deal. Vasseur's position has been under scrutiny this season, with Ferrari yet to land a single win outside of Hamilton's sprint victory in China in March. Former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has even been linked with the job since he was ousted earlier this month. Since his transfer from Mercedes, Hamilton has not landed a grand prix podium in Ferrari colours – a streak of 13 races – the deepest into the season he has ever gone without a top-three finish. However, speaking ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, the 40-year-old said: 'I am always positive about Fred, and I have told everyone that. I told you before it was the right choice. 'Fred signed me here. He is completely different to (Mercedes team principal) Toto (Wolff) but in terms of characters they are both massive racers. 'The real positive when I worked with Toto was how he was able to utilise individuals and figure out how people work best and how to get the most out of someone. 'For me, he created me with freedom to be able to express myself the way I wanted to and that enabled me to be the best version of myself. 'Fred is similar in that respect. I am still trying to learn the way he works. But I have absolute confidence in Fred, as I have always said.' Hamilton is sixth in the standings, 157 points off the championship pace and 30 points behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. Ferrari are second in the constructors' standings. Hamilton said at last week's round in Belgium that he had staged meetings with all of Ferrari's key figures – including chairman John Elkann, CEO Benedetto Vigna and Vasseur – and submitted two documents outlining his vision as to why the Italian giants are not up to speed. Ferrari's last world drivers' title came in 2007, with their most recent constructors' crown the following year. When you should NEVER press button on your dashboard even though it'll save you cash this summer
MOTORISTS have been warned when not to press a button on their motor's dashboard, even though it can help save cash this summer. While it can help save some pennies and make summer driving more bearable, there are times when motorists should think again when using the handy setting. 2 Your motor's air recirculation button can be most effective during those hot summer months. You can find the universal symbol for air recirculation on your dashboard which shows the outline of a car with a curved arrow within it. It can cool your car quicker and puts less of a strain on your air-conditioning, helping you to save cash. But there are times when motorists should never press the button. Drivers are urged not to use air recirculation setting for extended periods of time as the air in the car can become stale and stuffy. If the setting is frequently used, especially when it rains and during colder days and nights in the winter, it can increase the humidity in the motor's cabin too. This can cause the windscreen and windows to steam up rapidly affecting visibility. If you're on a long motorway trip, breathing the same recirculated air may also increase tiredness behind the wheel. And if you smoke or vape while driving, especially with passengers in the car, the air recirculation shouldn't be used for obvious reasons. Motorists are urged to remember that it's illegal to smoke in the car with passengers under the age of 18. But there's no doubt that using the setting comes with some useful benefits. It cools your motor's cabin quicker and more efficiently than the default external air ventilation setting. Activating the button shuts off the flow of air being introduced from outside, recirculating the air already in the vehicle. It's particularly handy for reducing the temperature inside the car when you first get in on a hot day. So rather climbing into a scorching motor and waiting an age for the air-conditioning to cool it down, experts suggest opening the doors and windows before your journey to let the hot air escape. This can also help get rid of toxins that build up from the interior materials after prolonged exposure to heat. Once you're on the road and the air-con has reduced the temperature, you can then switch on the recirculation function. The cool air will continue to recirculate putting less strain on your air conditioning system rather than continuously cooling down hot air being drawn in from outside. With the air-conditioning doing less work, it should mean you cut costs on fuel too. It can also lower maintenance costs and can delay the need for a re-charge which could cost anywhere between £50 to £200. It will also prolong the life of the cabin filter which traps dust and pollen entering the car. And switching to air circulation can also be ideal when sitting in heavy traffic, preventing any harmful emissions from entering your car. It even does an effective job at blocking out unpleasant smells.
