India's renewable energy capacity in total energy mix rises to 49% in Apr
Addressing the Regional Conference for the Northern Region States/UTs in Chandigarh, the minister said states should also work on having an adequate power generation mix, including the addition of nuclear generation capacity while meeting their resource adequacy plan.
He also pointed out that states should complete the installation of prepaid smart metres in government establishments and colonies by August 2025 and for all commercial, industrial and high-load consumers by November 2025.
States should work towards listing power sector utilities to generate additional resources and improve transparency and governance, the minister noted.
"We successfully met a peak demand of 250 GW in May 2024 and India has transformed from power-deficit to a power-sufficient nation and as of today, peak demand shortage is zero," he said.
He outlined the importance of continuous cooperation and coordination between central and state governments in achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
India's peak electricity demand is projected to reach 446 GW by 2034-35 and meeting this sustainably requires proactive planning and continued coordination between the centre, states, and stakeholders, the minister said.
He also advised states to implement Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) Guidelines and urged them to form dedicated teams for this critical planning.
The minister highlighted the importance of cyber-security measures and islanding schemes as effective measures to prevent power outages due to cyber concerns and enable the resilience of the grid.

Bawana Waste-To-Energy Plant Given Green Nod Amid Protests
New Delhi: A 30MW waste-to-energy plant near a village in Bawana Industrial Area has received clearance from the Union environment ministry, confirmed Delhi Pollution Control Committee. The 15-acre facility in northwest Delhi, which includes six acres as a green belt, aims to burn 3,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste as boiler fuel per day. Located in DSIIDC Industrial Area, it will be managed by Jindal Urban Waste Management (Bawana) Limited. Municipal Corporation of Delhi has provided the land. "The capital cost of the proposed project is Rs 660 crore and the capital cost for environmental protection measures is proposed as Rs 91.605 crore. The annual recurring cost towards the environmental protection measures is proposed as Rs 14.155 crore. The employment generation from the proposed project is 242 (during the operational phase)," stated the June 18 document granting EC. According to it, a JJ colony is within 1km of the plant while within 5km, there are several villages, including Naya Bans, Holambi Khurd and Sanoth. The waste will be brought via road from approximately 12km away and the plant will use approximately 6,25,000 litres per day of treated water from sewage treatment plants and approximately 7,000 litre fresh water daily. The document, however, claims that the project will not use groundwater. "A natural nullah is passing through the project site and Western Yamuna Canal is located approximately 32 metres from the site," stated the document, outlining protection measures, including storing waste in a closed pit, to prevent cross-contamination and similar provisions for fly ash and fuel oil. "The residents, especially those living near the industrial area, are already exhausted due to pollution," stated one of the key concerns raised during a public consultation, as highlighted in the grant letter. During the public consultation last Dec, in the presence of DPCC and district administration officials, many village residents cited their current health issues, specifically kidney and lung problems, which, they claimed, were caused by a neighbouring waste disposal facility. Incinerating waste would worsen the situation, they said, drawing parallels with the Okhla plant. According to a DPCC document issued later, over 680 responses were received. A plea was filed in Supreme Court by many residents, predominantly from Sanoth located within 4km, who were affected by the current landfill. The court sought a report on the probable impact on environment and health from Central Pollution Control Board. The report is still awaited.

Minister Bandi Sanjay Attacks Congress, Alleges Special Treatment To Akbaruddin Owaisi
Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar launched a scathing attack on the Telangana government on Monday, questioning alleged special exemptions granted to AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi's family and condemning alleged threats against media houses. Speaking to reporters in Jagtial district after inaugurating Central development projects, the Union minister alleged double standards and demanded a clarification from the Congress-led Revanth Reddy government in Telangana. Bandi Sanjay specifically questioned the Hyderabad Development Authority (HYDRA), stating, "Are the HYDRA authorities demolishing the houses of the poor in the name of encroachments, but giving exemptions to Akbaruddin Owaisi's family, who have built buildings in lakes and ponds and are running colleges and businesses there?" He cited claims by HYDRA that they cannot demolish illegal constructions at Mr Owaisi's college due to the presence of 10,000 students, contrasting this with the demolition of "small houses and huts built by poor people in the Musi river catchment areas, who have no source of livelihood or shelter". BJP MLA seeks closure of meat, liquor shops along Kanwar Yatra route
BJP MLA from Jangpura Tarvinder Singh Marwah has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah requesting him to temporarily shut all liquor and meat shops along the Kanwar Yatra route in Delhi. The MLA said in his letter that a temporary ban on liquor and meat shops will 'respect the sanctity of the Yatra' and prevent any possible 'untoward incident'. This year, the Yatra will begin from July 11. Speaking to the press on Monday, Mr. Marwah said, 'During Navratri, we achieved great success with 70-80% of shops remaining closed for all nine days.' Mr. Marwah, a member of the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee, said the Sri Guru Singh Sabha is a religious body that honours all religion. The Sabha will approach the owners of meat and liquor shops, urging them to respect the religious sentiments of the devotees, he added. Drinking water, medicines and resting camps for kanwariyas will also be arranged by gurdwaras, he said.
