The Boston Red Sox are bound to be one of the more intriguing teams to follow ahead of the trade deadline this season. Boston has already traded Rafael Devers, but it might not be done yet.
Boston could look to trade one of its young, controllable outfielders in order to capitalize on their value. Both Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu have been mentioned as potential trade chips this season.
The Athletic's Jim Bowden recently put together a poll of MLB executives in order to gain a bit of insight into what they were thinking ahead of the trade deadline. This poll revealed that some teams preferred Abreu over Duran as a trade chip, indicating Boston could be met with some loaded trade offers this year.

ARLINGTON, TEXAS - MARCH 27: Jarren Duran #16 of the Boston Red Sox, Ceddanne Rafaela #3 of the Boston Red Sox, and Wilyer Abreu #52 of the Boston Red Sox celebrate a win after the Opening Day game against the Texas Rangers March 27, 2025 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. More
Maddie Malhotra/Boston"Abreu was mentioned because some teams would prefer him over Duran in a trade due to his elite defense," Bowden wrote. "He also has an additional year of control (through 2029). However, I get the impression Boston's preference is to trade Duran over him unless the return for Abreu was much better. Abreu, 26, is batting .256 with 16 home runs and a 125 OPS+. He will again be in contention to win the Gold Glove Award for AL right fielders."
Abreu is having a great season for the Red Sox, but Boston has a lot of outfield depth. In the farm system, there are more players banging on the door of their big league call-up.
But Boston would need to land a huge deal to trade away Abreu. If the Red Sox can land a controllable starting pitcher or shut-down closer in a deal involving Abreu, it would make sense. But it wouldn't make much sense at all for the Red Sox to cut ties with a young outfielder in a deal for more prospects.
Still, it would be foolish for the Red Sox not to entertain the idea if Abreu receives extensive attention as a trade chip.
