Charles Bassey on why he joined the Boston Celtics for NBA's 2025 Las Vegas Summer League

USA Today3 days ago
For a player who was not even on the Boston Celtics roster for the Sin City Celtics at the NBA's 2025 Las Vegas Summer League, big man Charles Bassey had an impressive impact in Boston's 92-78 win over the Summer Memphis Grizzlies on Friday (July 11) afternoon.
The 6-foot-10 center put up 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks while shooting 7-of-8 from the floor overall. The Lagos, Nigeria native spoke with media after the Celtics win, explaining how he ended up with the Summer Celtics as a last-minute addition, and how the ball club's culture drew him to the team as a potential landing spot.
The folks behind the "CLNS Media Boston Sports Network" YouTube channel put together a clip of the interview with Bassey for us to watch later. Check it out below!

Lakers Eye Defensive Boost in Potential Trade Idea With Trail Blazers

Lakers Eye Defensive Boost in Potential Trade Idea With Trail Blazers originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The Los Angeles Lakers have been one of the most intriguing teams in the offseason. After being presented as one of the most active teams in trade discussions, the Purple and Gold have been very hesitant to pull the trigger on any potential moves thus far. Advertisement The Lakers have made some interesting additions to their team. The signing of Jake LaRavia helped the Purple and Gold strengthen their wing depth. Meanwhile, the re-signing of Jaxson Hayes helped the Lakers solidify their frontcourt rotation. The most significant signing thus far has been the addition of Deandre Ayton to address their need for a starting big man. With a capable center in their rotation, the Lakers have fulfilled one of their primary goals in the offseason, but the process of roster construction can't end here. As the need for signing reliable wing players arises, the Purple and Gold have continued their search for the right candidates. With this in mind, we present a potential trade idea that could significantly improve the Lakers' wing depth while also boosting their defensive prowess. Proposed Trade Details Los Angeles Lakers Receive: Jerami Grant, Matisse Thybulle Portland Trail Blazers Receive: Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, Jarred Vanderbilt, 2032 second-round pick A deal with the Trail Blazers may not currently be on the radar, but the potential outcome of it could be largely beneficial for the Lakers. Advertisement The addition of Jerami Grant and Matisse Thybulle would have a massive impact on the Lakers' wing depth. Although the departure of Rui Hachimura and Jarred Vanderbilt would be an unfortunate one, Grant and Thybulle are arguably more effective defenders overall. In such a scenario, Grant would effectively step into the role of Hachimura in the starting lineup, and in many ways, could even outperform him. Last season, the Trail Blazers forward recorded an average of 14.4 points with 3.4 rebounds per game while shooting 37.3% from the field and 36.5% from beyond the arc. These numbers may not stand out at first. But it is important to note that the 31-year-old missed a large portion of the season due to injury. This aspect of the forward may be a concern for the Purple and Gold. But in the scenario that he can remain healthy for a decent portion of the season, the Lakers may have a versatile defensive player who is more than capable of creating shots for himself. Advertisement The addition of Thybulle is more significant in improving the team's bench strength. The departure of Dorian Finney-Smith has created a need for veteran defenders on the perimeter, and the Australian could fit the bill perfectly. Early in his career, Thybulle earned two All-Defensive team selections. Although health issues have hobbled him since, the forward remains a capable presence on the roster. Thybulle played in 15 games last season and recorded an average of 7.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. These figures may not spark much inspiration, but his average of 2.2 steals per game represents valuable defensive upside. At 27 years old, the Blazers forward is still capable of being a significant contributor to the Lakers' defensive effort, albeit in limited minutes. This deal also benefits the Trail Blazers in some way. While there is no indication of what the Blazers' plans are, the team may benefit from acquiring two expiring contracts in the form of Rui Hachimura and Gabe Vincent. Advertisement Reports have indicated that the Lakers are most likely to part ways with Hachimura this offseason. A trade of this nature gives the forward a great chance to impress in a different system. After a season of averaging 13.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, Hachimura has displayed that he is a capable offensive threat, along with a solid defender. Given his consistency on both ends of the floor, the Trail Blazers may benefit from having a reliable and durable forward to add to their frontcourt rotation. The addition of Vanderbilt is similar in this regard. Although the Lakers forward has struggled with injury, he is expected to enter the next season in good health, suggesting a more positive outlook. Vanderbilt is a limited offensive player, with averages of 4.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. But his length and athleticism allow him to guard multiple positions. This is an asset that doesn't appear on the stat sheet and could prove to be of great value to Portland if they intend to use him. Advertisement Meanwhile, acquiring Vincent simply adds some veteran depth to Portland's backcourt. But given the kind of talent they have available to them, especially with the recent addition of Jrue Holiday, the Blazers may simply wait for his contract to expire. The addition of the 2032 second-round pick would only serve to increase the team's overall wealth of draft capital. Although Portland hasn't leveraged them yet, it certainly puts them in a solid position to acquire new talent via trade. The Lakers' Path Forward At the current juncture, it is abundantly clear that while the Lakers are going to be a competitive side in the West, they will not be contenders. Advertisement With severe shortfalls in talent across multiple positions, the Purple and Gold may succumb to the challenges of the long regular season, especially considering how competitive the Western Conference has become. This presents a bleak outlook for the franchise, particularly due to the current ultimatum placed upon them by LeBron James. Should the team fail to construct a title-contending roster, James is expected to demand a trade. Although a trade may not be an available option, a buyout remains more likely. As James' intentions to play for a contender become the driving force for the Lakers' offseason practices, it is becoming increasingly more challenging to determine what lies in store for the Purple and Gold. NBA Insider Proposes How The Clippers Could Acquire LeBron James In Shocking Trade Scenario

NBA Insider Proposes How The Clippers Could Acquire LeBron James In Shocking Trade Scenario originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The Los Angeles Lakers' offseason plans have seen a massive shift in energy following LeBron James' decision to opt in to his $52.6 million contract. With rising speculation that James would request a trade in the event of the Lakers failing to form a competitive roster, The Athletic's Fred Katz presented an unlikely trade proposal for the Los Angeles Clippers to acquire the star forward. Advertisement The LeBron James trade arc is becoming a major talking point in the offseason, especially after the several moves that have happened during the early days of free agency. After opting into his contract with the Purple and Gold, the 40-year-old expressed that he would request a trade if the team didn't construct a roster fit to compete. By doing so, James effectively issued an ultimatum to the Lakers' front office. Although the initial interest in the forward was quite low, there have been new inquiries coming in. This could be attributed to the Lakers' underwhelming effort in completing signings and trades, having only acquired Jake LaRavia and Deandre Ayton thus far. The moves made by the front office haven't inspired any confidence in the fan base, thus increasing the likelihood of James demanding a trade before the new season begins. Advertisement With this possibility in mind, Fred Katz presented two potential trades that would effectively shake up the Western Conference by sending the Lakers' star to the Clippers. Let's take a look at the two scenarios. The Clippers Part Ways With 3 Role Players For LeBron James In the more realistic of the two trade proposals, Katz presented the possibility of James being traded to the Clippers for three key role players. Proposed Trade Details Los Angeles Clippers Receive: LeBron James Los Angeles Lakers Receive: Norman Powell, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Derrick Jones Jr. This trade has some merit for both teams. For the Clippers, the addition of James immediately completes their Big Three, with James headlining next to Kawhi Leonard and James Harden. Advertisement James' averages of 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists are beyond impressive, especially at 40 years old. Seeing these stats transition into gameplay for the Clippers would significantly bolster their starting lineup. Leonard's two-way ability pairs well with James' playmaking and scoring skills. With Harden also elevating the team's offense, the Clippers would undoubtedly be one of the best teams in the West. Additionally, James' experience of playing under Ty Lue would also become a valuable factor in this scenario. But Katz acknowledged the major drawback the Clippers would face, which coincidentally would be to the Lakers' benefit. The trio of Norman Powell, Bogdan Bogdanovic, and Derrick Jones Jr. was immensely productive last season. Advertisement Powell is coming off a tremendous season, having averaged 21.8 points per game, emerging as the third scoring option for LA. Meanwhile, Bogdanovic continued to be a scoring threat off the bench, putting up an average of 10.8 points per game on shooting splits of 42.7% from the field and 36.3% from beyond the arc. The efficacy of these two players is only supported by the defensive work of Jones Jr., who brings the added benefit of having been Luka Doncic's teammate. He averaged 10.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, offering solid defensive support and reliable offense. Each of these players had a vital role on the Clippers last season. By trading away all of these players for James, LA could be stunting the team's chances of developing and winning it all. With a thinned-out bench rotation, the Clippers may be forced to overplay their starters, opening up the chances of injury derailing the season again. The Clippers Swap Kawhi For LeBron In a far more unlikely scenario, the Clippers and the Lakers may engage in a swap deal, sending Leonard to the Lakers and bringing James over to the Clippers. A trade of this nature has little long-term merit, apart from the short-term gain for the Clippers. Advertisement In the event of such a trade, the Clippers would acquire a 40-year-old James who is coming off a solid season and is still capable of carrying his weight on the offensive end. His ability to impact the game is sustainable, and with the load of playmaking off his shoulders, the star is capable of focusing on scoring and facilitating offense for the shooters on the team. Meanwhile, the Lakers would be taking on one of the league's most high-risk, high-reward stars. Last season, the 35-year-old forward recorded an average of 21.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. These figures saw a significant rise in the playoffs when the forward carried the team against the Nuggets. Advertisement The potential fit of a player like Leonard next to Luka Doncic is incredible. With Doncic handling playmaking and the forward anchoring the defense, the Purple and Gold would become a threat to any team in the West. But Leonard's health concerns and absences would be equally debilitating to the team. And should the forward suffer a serious injury and become sidelined for the season, the Lakers would face a major setback in the competitive environment of the Western Conference. In summation, this trade could possibly help both teams improve. But the risks involved for the Purple and Gold may turn them away from accepting such a package. What Is Next For LeBron James? The future scenarios for LeBron James are heavily dependent on the Lakers' offseason activities moving forward. The addition of Ayton should inspire some hope in the team's competence heading into the next season. Advertisement But there still exists a necessity to make more significant moves. With the Andrew Wiggins trade still on the table, along with other moves to acquire backup centers, the Lakers' ongoing roster construction efforts will need to bear fruit soon. "He Don't Wanna Be There": Rockets Legend Says Bucks Need To "Cut The Cord" With Giannis Antetokounmpo

"He Don't Wanna Be There": Rockets Legend Says Bucks Need To "Cut The Cord" With Giannis Antetokounmpo originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Following the Bucks' decision to waive Damian Lillard and sign Myles Turner, the future does not look very bright in Milwaukee. They no longer have a top-tier guard with significant experience in the league like they did with Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday before him. Advertisement Therefore, a lot of experts and veterans of the league have suddenly lost faith in Doc Rivers' roster. Among them was the former NBA champion Vernon Maxwell, who appeared on the 'All The Smoke' podcast with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson and expressed his opinion on the Bucks' situation. Barnes and Jackson also agreed with Maxwell that the Bucks' future looks dim with Giannis Antetokounmpo at this moment. "Giannis don't want to be in that motherf***er," said Maxwell as Barnes criticized the Bucks' moves this summer. When Barnes asked him if it's time for the Bucks to rebuild and trade Antetokounmpo, he did not mince his words. 'Yeah, it's rebuilding (time). They've got to cut the cord with Giannis. Let this mothe****er go cause he doesn't want to be there. You know what I mean? But yeah, they're in a rebuilding situation. That sh** is all f***ed up over there in Milwaukee now." "And especially when your main man doesn't want to play with you anymore, and he's done giving you everything he could give you. I mean that man could have left, and he stayed there, you know. They say he don't like to move around a lot so---But it's a good situation for him man, I just think they in rebuilding situation, man, the goddamn Milwaukee Bucks. That sh*** trash over there, I don't know, I wouldn't even want to go there and play.' Advertisement At the end of Bucks' 2024-25 season, there were rumors that Giannis Antetokounmpo is open to considering a move away from the Bucks. If they want to retain him, they will have to give him a championship-contending team. The Bucks no longer have a reliable second option for scoring after they waived Lillard. Jackson went on to criticize the Bucks and claimed that things started going downhill for them when they traded Khris Middleton away. Yes, Turner is a defensively sound big who can stretch the floor for the Bucks, a more skilled Brook Lopez, one could say, but his production is nowhere close to covering for what they lost with Lillard. He averaged 15.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks last season, which only replaces what Lopez did for the team. Damian Lillard averaged 24.9 points, 7.1 assists, and 4.7 rebounds last season. Kyle Kuzma, who joined the team in February after the Middleton trade, averaged 14.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in the time he has been with the Bucks. Even if they increase his offensive usage, his production is nowhere close to what Lillard brought to the team. Advertisement They extended their point guard, Kevin Porter Jr, on a two-year, $10 million deal. But even he is not a highly rated potential replacement for Lillard on their roster. The Bucks will need to carefully think about their moves in the remaining offseason if they want to compete for a championship with Giannis Antetokounmpo.
