Oraniyil Tamil Nadu: DMK campaign to feel the pulse of voters

New Indian Express13 hours ago
CHENNAI: DMK president and Chief Minister MK Stalin has been keenly tracking the progress of the 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' campaign, making random video calls to functionaries in the field for updates and seeking explanations, wherever necessary, from party functionaries of each Assembly constituency attending the 'Udanpirappe Vaa' one-on-one meetings.
'Stalin receives up-to-date status reports every day detailing the performance of each union, district and functionaries both those excelling and those lagging. He uses these reports during his one-on-one meetings with constituency-wise functionaries,' said a source.
Under 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu', the party has plans to reach approximately 2 crore households in 45 days. A team of party cadre along with a digital agent, a youth and a woman will visit every house within their respective polling booths across the state's 68,000 booths.
The party functionaries carry a questionnaire leaflet containing six 'Yes-or-No' questions.
They are read aloud to members of each household and the appropriate boxes are ticked based on the response. While the leaflet includes a question asking whether the respondent wished to join the 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu' campaign, answering 'Yes' to this does not mean they would automatically be enrolled as a party member.

Home Minster G. Parameshwara to hold peace committee meeting in Mangaluru on Wednesday

With Dakshina Kannada district witnessing three communal murders between April and May this year, Home Minister G. Parameshwara will chair a peace committee meeting in Mangaluru on Wednesday to thrash out ways to bring harmony in society. The meeting to be held at the Netravathi Auditorium on the zilla panchayat premises from 12 p.m. would be attended by Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader, district in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, elected representatives from the district, leaders of political parties, representatives of different organisations, educational institutions, religious leaders and others, said an official release. The meeting was earlier scheduled for June 13, a day after the Ahmedabad air crash, amid a host of other programmes. However, the meeting was cancelled, and the Home Minister restricted his itinerary to launching the Special Action Force for Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Shivamogga districts to combat communalism, as well as inaugurating residential quarters for police personnel. A rag-picker from Wayanad in Kerala, Ashraf, was beaten to death by a group of people on April 27 near Kudupu within the City Police Commissionerate limits. The incident occurred when the victim reportedly made some statements that angered the players at a local cricket event. Police have arrested a majority of the accused in this case. On May 1, the double murder accused and Hindutva activist Suhas Shetty was hacked to death by a group of persons at Bajpe within the Commissionerate limits. While the police nabbed a majority of the accused, the Union Home Ministry handed over the probe to the National Investigating Agency on June 7, stating that the case related to the targeted killing of an individual in public view to create terror in the minds of people by members of an alleged unlawful association. On May 27, Abdul Rahiman from Kolthamajalu in Bantwal taluk was hacked to death by a group of persons in Ira Kodi village when he, along with Kalander Shafi, was unloading sand from his pick-up vehicle. Rahiman was the secretary of the local Masjid committee. Bantwal Rural Police, under the Dakshina Kannada district police, have arrested the accused in the case, and the investigation is in progress.

Stalin inaugurates 729 new homes for Sri Lankan Tamils across five TN districts

In a significant step toward improving the living conditions of Sri Lankan Tamils in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday inaugurated 729 newly-built houses in rehabilitation camps across five districts. The inauguration was conducted via video conference from the State Secretariat, in the presence of Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran and Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam. Constructed at a cost of Rs 38.76 crore, the houses are located in refugee camps situated in Villupuram, Tiruppur, Salem, Dharmapuri, and Virudhunagar districts. These homes are part of a broader rehabilitation initiative by the Tamil Nadu government, announced under Rule 110 in the state Assembly in August 2021, aimed at upgrading infrastructure and living conditions in Sri Lankan Tamil camps spread across the state. As per the government's long-term plan, over 3,510 houses are to be built at a total estimated cost of Rs 180.34 crore in 35 rehabilitation camps. Of this, 2,781 houses in 32 camps across 18 districts have already been completed and handed over to beneficiaries. The state has also undertaken supplementary infrastructure upgrades in these camps to improve the quality of life. These include new internal roads, upgraded electricity lines, and enhanced drinking water supply facilities. The total cost of these civil works stands at Rs 7.33 crore. According to an official release, the rehabilitation programme is part of the DMK government's commitment to provide a dignified life to Sri Lankan Tamils who have been residing in 67 government-run camps across 26 districts of Tamil Nadu for decades, after fleeing ethnic conflict in their homeland. The Chief Minister, in his remarks during the inauguration, reiterated his government's resolve to continue supporting refugee communities through improved housing, access to basic amenities, and welfare schemes. He also emphasised the importance of integration and inclusion, ensuring that displaced populations can live with dignity and security. The ongoing rehabilitation efforts are seen as a model approach in refugee welfare, combining both humanitarian concerns and infrastructural development, and have received appreciation from human rights observers and community leaders alike.

Don't question achievements, work of Marathi people: BJP, MahaYuti govt snub Nishikant Dubey

The BJP and the MahaYuti government on Monday chose to distance themselves from BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's 'You people are surviving on our money. What kind of industries do you have?' jibe. Mumbai BJP president and Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, stated in the Assembly on Monday, 'The MP from Jharkhand must definitely present his argument that is within the law, but should not question the achievements and work of Marathi people. Marathi people do not live on anyone's pie.' Shelar did not name Dubey citing the fact that he was not a member of the Maharashtra Assembly. Shelar further said, 'Maharashtra is a testimony to the prowess of Marathi people all over the world. Marathi people's contribution to the GDP is quite substantial.' He added, 'The government's role is to protect the interests of Marathi people and ensure that injustice is not done to them." Shelar went on to add that, 'If the MP from Jharkhand does not know what the contribution of Marathi people is to the country's GDP, we will send him information about it.' Shelar's bid to clarify the position of the BJP and the MahaYuti government came after Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray slammed Dubey saying that, 'In Mumbai, non-Marathi speaking people are living with Marathi people with dignity. This has set the BJP's base on fire, there are scoundrels like Dubey, who are trying to vitiate the atmosphere.' Earlier, Dubey sparked controversy as in his fiery response to Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena founder Raj Thackeray, he said, 'You people are surviving on our money. What kind of industries do you have? If you are courageous enough and beat those who speak Hindi, then you should beat all those who speak Urdu, Tamil, and Telugu. If you are such a big 'boss', come out of Maharashtra, come to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu. Tumko patak, patak ke marenge.' Dubey criticised the Thackeray brothers for targeting Hindi-speaking people in Mumbai. Reacting to the ongoing row over Marathi language enforcement, Dubey accused the Thackeray cousins of "cheap politics" ahead of the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation elections and questioned their selective outrage
