Alex Scott's acid attack threat, Jess Glynne relationship, 'quit UK for US' plan

Daily Mirror15-06-2025
Alex Scott will be fronting Soccer Aid this Sunday alongside Dermot O'Leary, but from her love-life to a potential career in the USA, how much do you really know about the footballer-turned-BBC star?
Alex Scott is one of the UK's most recognisable presenters. The former Arsenal Women's footballer has made a seamless shift from playing on the pitch to being in the media glare.
Scott will be the face of Soccer Aid this Sunday alongside Dermot O'Leary, and her hosting portfolio is something to envy. She has fronted shows including Final Score, Match of the Day, Football Focus and The One Show.

The 40-year-old made her name after playing for the Gunners, Birmingham City and NWSL side Boston Breakers, while she also represented England on 140 occasions.

However, her transition from defender to TV star has not been without some issues. Here we take a closer look at Scott's love-life, her troubles with the BBC and a terrifying ordeal that involved a kidnapping in Russia.
Jess Glynne relationship and love-life
Scott and ' Rather Be ' singer Glynne have been an item since the summer of 2023. While they kept a low-profile initially, Scott eventually took to social media to share photos of the two, confirming them as a couple.
She has also spoken about wanting children with the songstress. However, love didn't come easy for Scott.
She has claimed that Glynne, 35, has helped her overcome her fear of forging a connection – something she insists developed in her childhood due to her relationship with her father, Tony, who has denied the claims about his parenting.
"We weren't allowed to express emotion," Scott told The Times in June 2024. "Dad didn't allow us to hug each other or say, 'I love you.' It had a huge impact on us all."

She continued: "I remember one of the first times Jess hugged me. I was like… {rigid]. She was like, 'Are you not going to put your arms around me?' But I didn't know how to do that."
Scott was previously in a relationship with former England and Arsenal team-mate Kelly Smith. The two were together for eight years prior to their split in 2013 and in her memoir, How (Not) To Be Strong, Scott claimed she was "madly and deeply in love' with the star.
Acid attack warning and death threats
Scott has candidly spoken about the rough side of being a famous figure. She once opened up on how she has been threatened with an acid attack, and that she was scared to even step outside after she was wrongly named as Sue Barker's replacement on A Question of Sport.

"There are negatives to fame. I've had plenty of racism, abuse and even death threats," she said to The Times. "People were saying, 'She's only on TV because she's black, female and younger. She's just ticking boxes.' I was scared to go out of the house because these trolls were saying they were going to throw acid in my face."
However, a deeply unsettling ordeal came as Scott was working for the BBC at the World Cup in Moscow in 2018. Kidnapped by a rogue Uber driver, Scott regaled a tale in her memoir of how a routine 15-minute drive to her hotel unfolded into a nightmare.

After the driver menacingly told her, 'Girls like you, I kill", quick-thinking saw her claim to the driver that she was a friend of Vladimir Putin, after meeting the Russian president earlier in her trip.
She told the driver: "If I don't see Putin tomorrow, he will find you," – and it's a sentence that looks to have saved her, as the driver then dropped her off at her destination.
Missing out on Match of the Day and USA plans
A painful chapter in Scott's life in the media appeared last year prior to being overlooked for the Match of the Day job. Gary Lineker has stepped down from the iconic show after 25 years in the hot seat, and it was a position that Scott was at one stage reportedly the frontrunner for, with BBC bosses wanting to move in a different direction.

However, the gig ultimately went for the experienced trio in Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan and Kelly Cates, who will all share presenting duties.
Rumours also surfaced she had intentions to move across the pond with Glynne to explore other opportunities in her field, following a troubled episode with the BBC that emerged last October.
The Sun reported Scott had been left 'hurt' after Football Focus – the show fronted by her – suffered from failing ratings and she wasn't backed by bosses at the Beeb.

She had previously defended herself against talk of dwindling viewers In September 2023 on X, after she claimed figures were in pristine health.
But fast forward a year, and a source in October 2024 said: "Alex is now seriously contemplating moving on from the show. Last year she was hugely hurt by unfair criticism about falling viewing figures – and felt she was thrown under a bus.
"The viewing figures were not as reported and she feels no-one backed her up and issued the correct viewing figures."
On her and Gylnne's move across the pond, the source added that the pair are "contemplating a move to America." As things stand, though, Scott remains in the UK, and will be a focal part of Soccer Aid on Sunday evening on ITV1.

She was the face of the much-adored children's programme CBBC from 1995 to 2000, before transitioning to BBC One's Live and Kicking until 2001. Her Instagram bio highlights her journey: "The shy kid who refused to play small and spent 30 years on TV! Now empowering women like YOU to UNLOCK your CONFIDENCE and CLAIM the SUCCESS you deserve!". Trey Farley, not just Katy's former 'Live and Kicking' mate but her husband too, and she have been blissfully united in matrimony for over 20 years, sharing their lives with their two offspring, Kaya and Akira. In an outpour of emotion this July 2023, they celebrated a special milestone – their 20th wedding anniversary. Katy took to her social media to reminisce, sharing snaps from their nuptials and penning down: "20 Years of US! 20 Years of Mr and Mrs Farley! What a ride we're on @rocaflix ... nobody else I'd rather be doing LIFE with! Happy 20 babe! Let's make more amazing memories! X (Ours was the Hans Zimmer version - obvs! )". Before finding joy with Trey, Katy had stepped into matrimony with her first love, Andrew Frampton, back in 1999, but alas, they went their separate ways by 2001.

Fan buys £35 restricted view Oasis ticket and can't get over how good it is

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info In the run-up to the much-anticipated Oasis reunion at Cardiff's Principality Stadium, a stroke of luck struck for some fans as they received emails alerting them to snap up last-minute tickets. For those who had endured the gruelling online queues back in August, this was a delightful twist – all the more sweetened by the bargain price of just £35 a ticket. Cardiff local Kelly Reardon Brown, who had previously spent a fruitless summer day trying to secure tickets, found her fortunes reversed this week. Instead of shelling out the expected £150 per ticket to see Liam and Noel Gallagher reunite on stage, she managed to bag hers for a mere £35. The only minor hiccup? The tickets were for seats with a 'restricted view' label, but it turned out to be the best £35 Kelly, a sales director, had splashed out all year, reports Wales Online. I had been checking the Ticketmaster website but everything was really high priced. I was expecting to pay around £150 a ticket for the area we sat in. I also knew how scarce the tickets are and it was opening night too." She found herself in block U5, tucked away in the top left corner of the stadium map, on the upper tier, and was astounded by the price. Kelly recounted her initial confusion: "I genuinely thought I'd messed up at first and had only bought one ticket. (Kelly bought two) When I went back and saw I'd got them for £34.50 each, I thought there had been a mistake. "I then text a friend who works for the stadium and checked that I didn't have fake tickets! I genuinely couldn't believe it." Kelly was relieved to find she hadn't been duped, and the U5 experience was "worth every penny. "The view was brilliant," she continued. "You could see the entire stage from side on and you even got to see backstage too when they were walking in which brilliant as they (Noel and Liam) turned to us and clapped when we all cheered. (Image: Kelly Reardon Brown) (Image: SeeTickets) (Image: Kelly Reardon Brown) "The screen was bent backwards so we had view of half of the screen. There was plenty of space too for us to dance. Great seats." Reflecting on the event, Kelly wished she had purchased more tickets to invite additional friends, but she feared they might sell out if she attempted to go through the buying process again. I can't believe I got to see Oasis on the history making opening night for £34.50! Im so lucky!". At the inaugural concert on 4 July, lead singer Liam Gallagher commented on the ticket fiasco. Speaking to the audience, he queried: "You all having a good time, yeah?". He then quipped: "Was it worth the £40,000 you paid for a ticket?". The tickets for the highly anticipated Oasis reunion flew off the virtual shelves earlier this year, selling out at all venues due to overwhelming demand. Nevertheless, there are still a few avenues open for fans hoping to catch the band at the last minute. Limited last-minute tickets can be purchased from the official Ticketmaster resale site, where fans unable to attend can sell their seats, although these tend to fluctuate in availability. Meanwhile, resale platforms like Viagogo, Vivid Seats, StubHub, and Twickets are offering tickets for various dates starting at £121, but fans should always remember that many official sites, such as Ticketmaster and Live Nation, advise against buying resale tickets.

Noel Gallagher confirms 'true reason for Oasis reunion' ahead of Edinburgh gigs

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info The Gallagher brothers have revealed the true reason behind their band reunion. During Oasis' second evening at Cardiff's Principality Stadium, Noel Gallagher disclosed who was responsible for him finally putting an end to his bitter dispute with brother Liam Gallagher. Oasis fever has gripped the UK once more, but it wasn't long ago that seeing Noel and Liam sharing a stage seemed impossible following their explosive split in 2009. READ MORE - BBC's Clare Balding says 'it's killing me' as she shares update with wife Alice READ MORE - Brooklyn Beckham 'snubs' sister Harper in latest heartbreaking signal to family Last year's reunion announcement came 15 years after Noel walked away from the Manchester group, declaring he "simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer", following a backstage altercation at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris. However, performing on stage this evening, Noel appeared visibly moved at times as he shared the spotlight with his sibling once more, reports the Mirror. On the second night of the show, Noel paused to acknowledge Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs when the band returned for their encore. He declared: "On guitar, if it wasn't for him, none of this would have happened!". Noel and Liam strutted onto the stage before acknowledging fans at Cardiff's Principality Stadium on Friday, marking the opening night of their highly anticipated global comeback tour. The siblings, who hadn't performed together since their dramatic breakdown in 2009, powered through their set list, opening with Hello, from their second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? At their long-awaited reunion gig, the lead vocalist offered heartfelt apologies to fans for the lengthy wait. Liam Gallagher engaged with the crowd multiple times during the performance, remarking: "Hello people, it's been too long," ahead of their third track, (What's the Story). In a moment of camaraderie before belting out Cigarettes And Alcohol, Liam urged the audience to come together, instructing them to "turn around and hug a stranger." (Image: Daily Mirror) (Image: Scott A Garfitt/Invision/AP) He rallied the concert-goers, proclaiming: "Right then beautiful people, I want to see you all turn around and put your arms round each other. And when the tune starts, jump up and f****** down." The Gallagher brothers didn't shy away from poking fun at the recent dynamic pricing debacle that had left fans in an uproar as ticket prices for their UK and Ireland shows seemingly skyrocketed from £148 to £355. This controversy caught the attention of both the Government and competition authorities, who have promised to investigate the matter. Following his performance of Roll With It, Liam exited the stage, allowing Noel to step into the spotlight as the lead singer for the first time. He humorously commented on the gig's value, quipping: "It's just gone up." Later on, Liam chimed in with a jest about the ticket prices, asking the crowd: "Was it worth the £40,000 you paid for a ticket?". As the band played the closing notes of Live Forever, they paid tribute to Diogo Jota, the Liverpool footballer tragically killed in a car crash on Thursday, by displaying his picture. The audience responded with a resounding cheer and applause, honouring the late sportsman. As they launched into the crowd-pleaser 'Champagne Supernova', their final tune of the night, the frontman declared: "Right you beautiful people, this is it. Nice one for putting up with us over the years, we know we've been difficult. Champagne Supernova, nice one." Despite the lack of on-stage chatter between the Gallagher brothers during the performance, they did share a fleeting moment of camaraderie with a quick high-five and a brief shoulder hug after belting out their last song. Supporting Oasis were the 90s icons Cast and the ex-Verve lead Richard Ashcroft. Cast, hailing from Liverpool and known for their indie rock flair, gave a nod to Diogo Jota by dedicating their top 10 smash 'Walkaway' to the football star.
