Cuttack: Chaos ensued during the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) meeting on Wednesday as corporators from BJP and other parties created an uproar, accusing mayor Subhash Chandra Singh of stalling development projects in various wards and bypassing council norms.
Tensions soared when BJD corporator Mohammed Iftekhar Alam of ward 18 accused the mayor of delaying essential development work in his area. "It's been more than three and a half years since I took the initiative to propose and push forward multiple development projects in my area. These included vital infrastructure like roads, a community health centre, anganwadi buildings, paver block installations and several other essential public works.
Not a single project has materialised on the ground. The files are moving, promises are being made, but people continue to suffer due to inaction and neglect," alleged Alam.
BJP corporator Gopal Behera of ward 45 alleged irregularities in the allotment of a petrol pump. "They have sanctioned a petrol pump in ward 50 without the mandatory approval of the CMC council. This act seems highly irregular and points to a possible mala fide intention by the mayor and his close associates," Behera claimed.

Corporator Santosh Bhola of ward 50 from Congress also alleged that smaller projects proposed by corporators are deliberately delayed if they are not aligned politically. "Development should not be dictated by politics. We are here to serve our people, not to dance to the tunes of favouritism," he said.
Corporators staged a sit-in in the council hall, blocking the mayor's podium. Several sat on the floor, shouting slogans of corruption and "undue favouritism", disrupting proceedings for hours.
Mayor Singh refuted all charges. "All proposals are being reviewed as per rules and priority. No irregularity has occurred, and I welcome an official inquiry if anyone has doubts," he said. "Some corporators want to politicise the session. I will never let it happen. I am working for the people and will work till my last breath," added Singh.

Prepare reports for power generation for next 20 years: Bhatti

Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka instructed electricity officials to identify 23 locations across the State to bring into large-scale use power from hydel and pumped storage sources, and submit a comprehensive report. He held a review meeting with GENCO and TRANSCO officials at Somasila in Kollapur constituency on Sunday. He reviewed the hydropower projects on the Krishna River from Jurala to Pulichintala, and suggested that if necessary, the services of globally renowned consultants should be utilised. The Deputy CM appreciated the foresight of the Congress government of 1978, which introduced advanced technologies with the help of world-famous Japanese companies like Toshiba and Mitsubishi, conducting deep studies on reverse pumping systems at the time. He praised the visionary thinking of the leaders and engineers of that era. Further, GENCO directors and officials were instructed to draw up plans for sufficient power generation over the next 10 to 20 years in line with increasing demand. He stressed the need to expand the use of alternative energy sources like Green hydrogen, Floating solar, Rooftop solar, Thermal power, Wind energy and battery storage systems.

Tariff tantrums have economists betting RBI biting rate-cut bullet again

MUMBAI: The 25% export duty shocker from the US effective August 7, which if not reversed to a reasonable level may shave off 20-30 bps from this year's growth, has the Mint Road-watchers divided with some calling for a monetary support given the below-target inflation prints while some others calling for caution till the tariff talks are completed. The Reserve Bank-led monetary policy committee begins its bimonthly meeting on Monday and the policy decisions will be announced on Wednesday. The RBI has already cut the policy repo rate by a 100 bps since February with the last meeting delivering an unconventional 50 bps to 5.5%. On July 30, US president Donald Trump unexpectedly announced a 25% flat tariffs on Indian goods along with an unspecified additional penalty on India's energy and military purchases from Russia. The announcement came as a shocker to New Delhi as five rounds of trade talks have been completed and the sixth round is slated for August 25 in the Capital. What was more shocking was that the new tariffs are much more than anticipated and leave Indian goods at a great disadvantage to many of its market rivals. While economists at British brokerage Barclays see the tariff impact to shave 30 bps off GDP this fiscal—RBI has pegged it at 6.5% this fiscal, foreign agencies like the IMF and the Asian Development Bank have pegged it marginally lower at 6.4% and 6.5% respectively, domestic rating agency Icra and Japanese brokerage Nomura have pegged it at 20 bps bringing down growth to 6% this year.
