Ex-national footballer Tuck scores his second Asian gold

KUALA LUMPUR: Lee Tuck has walked away from the M-League into something more interesting.
The former national footballer is into HYROX, a hybrid sport which requires him to run eight kilometres, interspersed with eight different workout stations of SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jump, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, and wall balls.
The England-born Tuck, who became a naturalised player for Harimau Malaya, won the HYROX Asian Championships (35–39 age group) for the second consecutive year in Singapore last week.
The 36-year-old shared on Instagram. "Such a great feeling when the sacrifice pays off and the goal you've committed so much towards finally comes together.
"Back-to-back gold at the HYROX Asian Championship! Different race. Different country. Different challenges. Same mindset — show up, compete, and give it everything.
Tuck left the M-League last year after playing for Kedah. He returned to England to focus on real estate — a venture that has also seen considerable success, with his company named as a finalist for the Best Real Estate Investor Award in the United Kingdom last year.
Tuck earned nine caps for Malaysia and scored three goals between 2022 and 2023. At M-league level, he made a significant impact at Negri Sembilan (2017), Terengganu (2018–2020, 2022), Pahang (2021–2022) and Kedah (2023).

Omid's promotion adds pace to Selangor's frontline

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor have promoted Afghanistan striker Omid Musawi from their Under-23 squad as they look to strengthen their frontline for the new M-League season. The 24-year-old, known for his pace, joined the Red Giants' U-23 side in October last year and is now eager to make his mark with the senior team. "Since arriving last year, I felt right at home," said Omid in a statement. "Selangor are a professional, development-focused club, and I'm proud to now be part of the senior team. This is a great opportunity for me to grow, not just as a player but as a person." "My aim is to play as much as I can, give my all, and help the team succeed." Born in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, and raised in the Netherlands, Omid began his career in the youth ranks of AGOVV Apeldoorn before moving to FC Twente's academy in 2011. He went on to score 10 goals and provide three assists in 31 matches with Twente's youth squad and also featured for their reserve side. His development continued with stints in the youth setups of Vitesse and PEC Zwolle, later earning promotion to the senior squads of both Dutch clubs. Omid's professional breakthrough came in Australia with Para Hills Knights SC, where he made 26 appearances, including in the National Premier Leagues South Australia. He made his senior international debut for Afghanistan in a friendly against Vietnam on June 1, 2022, and has since earned nine caps. Selangor have also signed Brazilian striker Chrigor Moraes and Thai international midfielder Picha Autra. The club are reportedly close to finalising a deal for former Kedah and Chonburi forward Willian Lira.

MFL to fix VAR flaws ahead of new M-League season

KUALA LUMPUR: After a controversial debut season for the video assistant referee (VAR) system, the Malaysian Football League (MFL) has promised improvements for the 2025-2026 M-League campaign. Although FA of Malaysia (FAM) referees' committee chairman Datuk S. Sivasundaram described VAR's performance last season as "excellent" — citing an average of 0.57 on-field reviews per match and a review time of 2.27 minutes — several key errors sparked criticism. The most notable incident saw referee Razlan Joffri Ali and a VAR official suspended for two matches and retrained following a contentious Super League clash between Perak and Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT). MFL acting chief executive officer Shazli Shaik said steps are being taken to improve the VAR application. "To date, we've conducted two VAR improvement sessions. FIFA and AFC representatives also took part in the sessions," said Shazli. "Last season was our first using VAR, and we've noted the shortcomings. We're working to implement those corrections for the upcoming season." Shazli added that the 2025-2026 M-League schedule will be released on Friday. Malaysia will be represented by JDT and Selangor in the Asean Club Championship. JDT, as reigning Super League champions, will again compete in the Asian Champions League (ACL) Elite, while Selangor will feature in ACL2. Meanwhile, Super League newcomers Immigration FC have until Saturday to confirm their home venue for the new season.

Cricket-England win toss and opt to bowl against changed India, Bumrah rested

Cricket - Second Test - England v India - Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham, Britain - July 2, 2025 India head coach Gautam Gambhir with Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep during the warm up before the match Action Images via Reuters/Paul Childs (Reuters) -England won the toss and opted to bowl in the second test against India at Edgbaston on Wednesday, with the tourists making three changes and resting pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah as they manage his back for the series. Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur were dropped from the line-up, with Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Akash Deep coming into the playing 11 while Bumrah is set to return for the third test at Lord's which begins on July 10. "This is an important match for us but the third match at Lord's -- there may be something more in the wicket and we thought we'll play him (Bumrah) there," Indian skipper Shubman Gill said. "We were very tempted to play (Kuldeep Yadav) but looking at the last match we wanted to add some depth to the batting. This year has been a year of chaos, a lot of teams who haven't won a lot have won, so maybe that'll change fortunes for us." England named an unchanged line-up after winning the first test by five wickets, with fast bowler Jofra Archer not getting a look-in despite being named in the squad. "When you bring Jofra Archer back you consider everyone in your squad. It was a really good team performance last week and the bowlers performed well," England captain Ben Stokes said. "With the ball you understand the conditions a bit more. We're in good order here." (Reporting by Rohith Nair in Bengaluru; editing by Clare Fallon)
