But the brand's electric Spectre coupe takes it a step further with a truly silent electric powertrain.
A pair of electric motors provides all-wheel drive and an output of either 577 or 650 horsepower, depending on which model you choose. Acceleration is effortless, but don't expect the Spectre to carve corners alongside the world's premier sports coupes. This two-door is more for relaxed cruising.
Expert Tip: If you want a similarly luxurious experience with a side of athleticism, consider a model from Rolls-Royce's main rival, Bentley.

Rolls-Royce will let you customize a Spectre pretty much any way you want. And that's a good thing, because, with a price tag this high, we expect buyers will want something truly personalized. We'd go with the more powerful Black Badge model because, well, why not?

The standard Spectre comes with a dual-motor electric powertrain with 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. After taking the Spectre on a test drive, we can assure you this is more than enough power to move the big coupe with authority. The Black Badge variant gets a sharp increase in power and torque to 650 horsepower and 793 pound-feet.
Although sharp impacts still make themselves known, Rolls-Royce has installed adaptive suspension to ensure an appropriately isolated ride over all but the biggest bumps, and the engineers also made room for a massive amount of sound-deadening material to maintain a whisper-quiet cabin.
And oh, how quiet it is. On the road, the Spectre is so silent inside that your ears pick up almost no sounds until you get up to 80 mph, and the wind starts to only slightly penetrate into the tomb-like cabin. At our test track, we recorded a very quiet 63-dB reading on our sound meter at a 70 mph cruise.

In Comparison: You may scoff at a 3.7-second result and point to the Tesla Model S Plaid that hit 60 mph in 2.1 seconds in our testing, but we'd be quick to remind you that Rolls-Royce's brand ethos is more about quiet cruising than mind-bending performance. The Black Badge model will certainly be quicker to 60 mph than the standard one we tested, but we won't know exactly how quick it is until we can put it through its paces.

The Spectre sports a 102.0-kWh battery borrowed from the BMW i7, which is estimated to provide a driving range of up to 253 miles per charge when paired with 23-inch wheels. Going with the smaller 22-inch wheels increases the range estimate to as much as 277 miles per charge. Our test car wore the 23-inch wheels but still delivered an impressive 260 miles in our real-world highway range testing.
DC fast-charging is standard, but we'd guess that most Spectre buyers will have a charging system installed at their estates so they aren't forced to wait around in the parking lot of a Walmart like the rest of us.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
First Row: The Spectre's cabin offers space for four with bucket seats in both rows. Anyone familiar with Rolls-Royce's current interior design will find a similarly sybaritic one here, although the company has added several design features that are unique to Spectre. For example, in addition to the brand's signature starry-night headliner, the Spectre's door panels rock a similar twinkle with tiny LED lights sparkling in the area surrounding the armrests. There is also a seemingly endless array of personalization options and material choices.
Second Row: Rear-hinged coach doors take some getting used to, but they open wide to make accessing the rear seat easy. The second row isn't as spacious as the first, but the seats are comfortable, and the Spectre offers plenty of amenities to accompany the cozy environment.
Cargo Capacity: Considering the Spectre's size, its 10-cubic-foot trunk could be considered a little small, but it's easy to access thanks to a power trunk lid and should offer enough space for a weekend's worth of luggage or a sizable haul of shopping bags.

More than 140 people are killed or seriously injured in tailgating incidents in England each year, according to research. Tailgating is when a driver does not leave the proper space between themselves and the vehicle in front of them if it were to suddenly break. It is a factor in at least one in eight collisions on England's motorways and major A-roads, according to National Highways. The agency has launched a campaign aimed at tackling the dangerous behaviour. It highlighted that while 43% of drivers admit to tailgating, 60% say they are anxious when it is done to them. The discomfort and anxiety caused by tailgating were also reflected in other common, everyday scenarios - with more than half of respondents saying they felt uncomfortable with people walking behind them on the street or on public transport, or standing directly behind them in a lift. Sheena Hague, director of road safety at National Highways, said keeping a small distance could save lives. "Tailgating isn't just irritating; it's intimidating and dangerous," she said. "Most people wouldn't dream of standing right behind someone in a queue or walking on their heels down the street, yet this is exactly what we see on our roads." "By tapping into the universal discomfort many of us feel around an invasion of our personal space, we're not just advising drivers what to do," he said. Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, claimed that 'AI will do our drudge work, freeing us to do the creative tasks where humans excel.' But Microsoft also announced cuts of 6,000 jobs in May, partly attributed to AI automation. Andy Jassy, Amazon's CEO, stated that 'Agents will allow us to start almost everything from a more advanced starting point… focus less on rote work and more on thinking strategically about improving customer experiences and inventing new ones.' Amazon has announced 27,000 layoffs since 2022, for some of which AI efficiencies were explicitly cited. Similar patterns exist for other tech firms, including Meta and Duolingo. What's going on? Is this just a mismatch between PR and the efficiency imperative? Is there any evidence that the jobs are being redesigned for increased creative content, or are we experiencing a straightforward substitution of people for AIs? Perhaps is neither of these, but rather that contradictory messages are natural as executives naviate the fog of transition to a radically new technology. AI certainly has the potential to free people to spend more time on creative tasks. It can create slack time for learning, innovation, or deep thinking about a design. It can also be used to create jobs with broader accountability or a richer work environment. But if any of these is happening, it isn't being discussed. That is too bad. Businesses could be missing an opportunity, one that goes beyond task automation to rethinking the design of work and technology. They may be missing the chance to take true advantage of the expanding capabilities of generative AI. A narrow focus on efficiency can shift attention away from other important metrics, like customer satisfaction and employee engagement. The irony is that an efficiency mindset might not even maximize efficiency, at least in the long run. In an interview, Patricia Sachs, a workplace anthropologist, told me that "automation mechanizes the way things are supposed to happen. But they almost never happen as expected." The reason is that much work in the real world is invisible, involving workarounds, improvisations, and social networks. As Sachs noted, "none of these appear in the workflow diagram or org chart." This was true at Klarna, a leader in the deployment of generative AI. The company has claimed that AI handles about two-thirds of customer service chats, equivalent to the work of over 700 agents. Their initial results showed, in addition, a drop in resolution times and reduced repeat inquiries, all while maintaining customer satisfaction. But Klarna has started to recruit human agents again, acknowledging that automation led to declines in service quality, customer satisfaction, and trust. CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski acknowledged that "cost unfortunately seems to have been a too predominant evaluation factor" in the AI initiative, which led to reductions in quality, morale and trust. The company is now hiring human agents and seeking a more productive blend of AI efficiency and human empathy. Others are reaching similar conclusions. Ravin Jesuthasan, a senior partner at Mercer, cites lessons he learned from a large-scale case study of AI implementation at a financial services firm. The results were impressive, including a reduction in the work of the current staff by 50% and an 18% reduction in employee turnover. In the article, "Want AI-Driven Productivity? Redesign Work," he argues the key to lasting AI success is to start with the work, not the technology. These early experiences emphasize the importance of a focus the messy, human, frequently-changing work that is at the center of any good AI application. Starting with the technology risks missing something important that can erode financial benefits. So what should executives do? Success is more about mindset and taking an holistic approach than it is about technology. Moving beyond a narrow focus on efficiency will lead to more durable and customer-friendly technology and more productive workplaces.

Beneath those clean Scandinavian lines lives a 455-hp gas-electric powertrain consisting of a turbocharged inline-four up front and an electric motor on the rear axle (nonhybrid versions are also available and reviewed separately). Together, they offer smooth operation no matter which parts are contributing, and a 4.8-second run to 60 mph is nothing to sneeze at. Our one dynamic gripe is that its suspension verges on harsh, especially over broken pavement. If you'd rather have something in the same general shape but with a bigger battery and no gas engine, the all-electric EX90 may be for you. What's New for 2026? The XC90 received some big updates midway through the 2025 model year. We don't expect much, if anything, to change this year. It offers desirable features like a panoramic roof, power-adjustable and heated front seats, adaptive cruise control, and a host of standard safety features. Compare Cars Engine, Transmission, and Performance The XC90 T8 makes use of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that works with a rear-axle-mounted electric motor and a 14.7-kWh battery to whip up 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque. As with all new XC90s, the T8 PHEV is only available with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. While we had issues with the complicated and unrefined turbo- and supercharged powertrain in earlier versions of the T8, the newer turbocharged-only engine and accompanying hybrid system provide a much more refined driving experience. The transitions between electric and gas propulsion are now seamless. The brake pedal is also noteworthy for its linear response during either regenerative or friction braking. The XC90 T8 gets only passing marks when it comes to its road manners, but it does have nicely weighted steering and nimbler handling than expected for such a large and heavy SUV. When we drove the loaded XC90 T8 with the air-suspension upgrade, we found its ride to be a bit too firm, but we haven't yet driven the base suspension on Michigan's roads to see how its tuning improvements play out. 0–60-MPH Times At our test track, the updated XC90 T8 got to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. That's a bit slower than before, but it's still competitive among other PHEV luxury SUVs. View Exterior Photos Volvo Towing and Payload Capacity The XC90 T8 has the highest maximum towing capacity in the XC90 lineup and can pull up to 5290 pounds. Range, Charging, and Battery Life The T8 plug-in hybrid uses a 14.7-kWh battery pack that's good for an EPA-estimated 32 miles of driving range per charge. In our real-world highway range testing, we achieved a result of 25 miles. While the battery can't quick-charge on a DC fast-charger, it can be charged at home or Level 2 public charging stations. Volvo claims that the T8 takes around five hours to charge from 0 to 100 percent when using a 240-volt, 16-amp outlet. Volvo also provides a provision in the XC90's drive modes to hold the battery's charge for later use or add charge while the gas engine powers the car. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe The EPA hasn't released any fuel-economy information for the 2026 XC90 Hybrid yet, but the 2025 model earned ratings of 58 MPGe with the electric motor pitching in and 27 mpg combined without. During our 75-mph real-world highway fuel-economy test, the XC90 T8 fell short of those ratings, earning just 49 MPGe and 25 mpg in hybrid mode. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo The XC90's interior is a masterpiece of restraint, featuring an artful design and high-quality materials that together create a warm, upscale ambiance. Last year's updates brought upgraded materials, a redesigned dashboard, a revised center console, and new textile upholstery options. All models are offered with either a six- or seven-seat layout. Adults won't be happy in the third row, however, especially if the journey is long. The XC90's wide, boxy silhouette helps in the cargo-hauling department, but interior storage compartments aren't as cavernous as in some competitors. View Interior Photos Volvo Infotainment and Connectivity A handsome, tablet-like 11.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard, as is a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster; if you want it, a head-up display is optional. The software interface is derived from Google's Android Automotive system, but Apple CarPlay is standard for iPhone users. The system features in-dash navigation based on Google Maps, and users can interact via voice with the Google Assistant. A ten-speaker stereo system is standard and features a 220-watt amplifier, but two different premium audio setups are available: a 600-watt, 14-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo or a 1410-watt, 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins setup.
