Tennessee Officials Could Face Felony Charges for Releasing Names of Officers Aiding ICE Efforts Under Republican-Led Bill
The bill, titled Senate Bill 1464, "makes certain records regarding immigration enforcement actions confidential and not subject to public disclosure by state or local government entities or officials."
This comes after Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell implemented an executive order requiring the Metro Nashville Police Department and Metro councilmembers to record and publicize any interactions with federal immigration authorities, reported WKRN.
Last month, a city document was released which described 35 interactions between Metro Police and immigration enforcement federal agencies. The report included the names of individuals such as a Metro Council member, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement analyst and Homeland Security officers. However, the names were later redacted.
O'Connell refused to rescind the order, stating that it "helps makes sure that nobody can accuse local, state or federal entities of activity that did or did not occur," after Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton demanded that the order be repealed.
Sexton and Senator Majority Leader Jack Johnson, both Republicans, then joined forces to file Senate Bill 1464.
"Mayor O'Connell's decision to release sensitive information undermines the rule of law, violates public trust, and jeopardizes the safety of those who protect our communities. This bill makes it clear: if you use your office to interfere with federal immigration enforcement or endanger officers, there will be swift and serious consequences. Tennessee will not be a sanctuary for lawlessness," Sexton said in a statement.

US House Panel Subpoenas Clintons In Epstein Probe
The US House Oversight Committee on Tuesday subpoenaed former president Bill Clinton and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton for testimony on sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to letters posted on its website. The Clintons were among multiple former Democratic and Republican government officials -- as well as the Justice Department -- targeted by investigators in a major escalation of the controversy surrounding the investigation into the disgraced financier, who died in 2019 awaiting trial for sex trafficking. The White House has been facing increasingly intense demands to be more transparent after the Justice Department angered Trump supporters -- many of whom believe Epstein was murdered in a cover-up -- when it confirmed last month that he had died by suicide and that his case was effectively closed. The department also said Epstein had no secret "client list" -- rebuffing conspiracy theories held by Trump's far-right supporters about supposedly high-level Democratic complicity. Trump has urged his supporters to drop demands for the Epstein files, but Democrats in the Republican-led Congress -- with some support from majority lawmakers -- have also been seeking a floor vote to force their release. "By your own admission, you flew on Jeffrey Epstein's private plane four separate times in 2002 and 2003," Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer wrote to former president Clinton. "During one of these trips, you were even pictured receiving a 'massage' from one of Mr. Epstein's victims. The White House has been seeking to redirect public attention from uproar over its handling of the affair with a series of headline-grabbing announcements including baselsss claims that former president Barack Obama headed a "treasonous conspiracy" against Trump. Epstein was a financier and friend to numerous high-profile people -- for years, including Trump -- who was convicted of sex crimes and then imprisoned pending trial for allegedly trafficking underage girls. His 2019 prison cell death supercharged a conspiracy theory long promoted by many Trump supporters that Epstein had run an international pedophile ring and that elites wanted to make sure he never revealed their secrets. After Trump returned to power in January, his administration promised to release Epstein case files. Several of Trump's most effective promoters over the years -- including new FBI Director Kash Patel and his deputy Dan Bongino -- made careers of fanning the rumors about Epstein. But when Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on July 7 that she had nothing to release, Republicans were furious -- and Trump has attempted to control the scandal ever since. Yet it has dominated headlines through the summer, showing just how hard it is for 79-year-old Trump to maintain his usual mastery of driving news agendas -- even within his fervently loyal "MAGA" base. Things got even more complicated for him after a Wall Street Journal report that Trump had written a lewd birthday letter to Epstein in 2003. Trump denies this and has sued the Journal. The Journal then dropped a separate story, saying Bondi had informed Trump in May that his name appeared several times in the Epstein files, even if there was no indication of wrongdoing. The president recently raised further questions about his past relationship with Epstein when he told reporters he fell out with his former friend after Epstein "stole" female employees from the spa at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Other officials targeted by the panel include former FBI director James Comey, former special counsel Robert Mueller and ex-attorney generals Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder, Merrick Garland, Bill Barr, Jeff Sessions, and Alberto Gonzales. Their depositions will take place between mid-August and mid-October. Comer also issued a subpoena to the Justice Department for records related to Epstein -- including its communications with Trump's predecessor Joe Biden and his officials. Lawmakers have also been seeking testimony from Epstein's accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving 20 years in prison for her role in his alleged crimes -- although her cooperation is considered unlikely.

Texas governor issues threat as Democrats leave in protest – DW – 08/04/2025
Democratic state legislators in Texas have said a Trump-backed redistricting plan is an attempt to "rig the 2026 election." Trump said the plan could add five Republicans to the House of Representatives. Democratic lawmakers in Texas left the state on Sunday in an attempt to deny the Republican-led legislature the quorum required to pass a controversial redistricting of the state. On Monday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott threatened to remove the lawmakers if they did not return to the state within 24 hours. "If you're seeing this video, my Democratic colleagues and I have just left our beloved state to break quorum and stop Trump's redistricting power grab," Democratic Representative James Talarico said in a video posted on X on Sunday. Talarico said the Republican redistricting plan was an attempt at "rigging" the 2026 elections. Currently, the US House of Representatives is held by Republicans with a narrow 220-212 majority, with three Democratic-held seats vacant after members' deaths. To determine the number of representatives that each state is allocated, states are required to redistrict every 10 years based on the US Census. Texas' Republican-dominated legislature passed its latest redistricting just four years ago, but now it is pursuing a mid-cycle redistricting ahead of the 2026 congressional election. US President Donald Trump has openly encouraged the Texas redistricting plan, telling reporters that he expects the effort to yield as many as five additional Republicans to the House of Representatives. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A vote in the Texas legislature on the proposed maps had been set for Monday, but it cannot proceed if the majority of Democratic members deny a quorum by not being present. Some of the state Democratic legislatures landed in New York and some in Chicago, where they were welcomed by the Democratic Governor of Illinois JB Pritzker. They all declined to say how long they would stay out of Texas. "We will do whatever it takes. What that looks like, we don't know," said state Rep. Gene Wu, the Texas House Democratic Caucus leader. Although the move was bold, legislative walkouts often only delay passage of a bill, but do not manage to stop it. Governor Abbott said in a statement that any Democrat House member who did not return within 24 hours would be removed from the Texas House. "Democrats hatched a deliberate plan not to show up for work, for the specific purpose of abdicating the duties of their office and thwarting the chamber's business," Abbot said.

Trump fires labor data chief over disappointing jobs report – DW – 08/02/2025
The US president said the latest jobs report was "rigged" to "make him look bad," accusing BLS chief McEntarfer of manipulating the data. Trump did not provide evidence of such manipulation. President Donald Trump announced on Friday the dismissal of the US Commissioner of Labor Statistics, just hours after the entity had published its latest report on job growth and the economy. Commissioner Erika McEntarfer has been leading the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) since January 2024. The post, a four-year term, is the only one in the agency that is appointed by the president. McEntarfer was confirmed by the US Senate with an overwhelming majority of 86-8, with now Vice President JD Vance among those who voted The Bureau's jobs report on Friday showed that just 73,000 jobs were added in the US last month and that 258,000 fewer jobs were created in May and June than previously estimated. The report also suggested that the economy has sharply weakened during Trump's tenure. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Trump accused McEntarfer of tampering with the jobs numbers, but provided no evidence to back his claims of data manipulation by the BLS. "We need accurate Jobs Numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this [Joe] Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY," Trump said on the social media platform Truth Social. "She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified," he added. "In my opinion, today's Jobs Numbers were RIGGED in order to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad," Trump said. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer followed Trump's lead, writing on X that McEntarfer was no longer leading the bureau and that William Wiatrowski, the deputy commissioner, would take over as the acting director. "I support the President's decision to replace Biden's Commissioner and ensure the American People can trust the important and influential data coming from BLS," Chavez-DeRemer said. Following the announcement, economists, labor unions and Democratic Party leaders criticized the move. "The civil servants at BLS are not political actors. They are professionals committed to producing accurate, independent data, regardless of who is in power," said American Federation of Government Employees national president Everett Kelley, adding that McEntarfer has worked in the federal government for more than two decades under multiple administrations. "What does a bad leader do when they get bad news? Shoot the messenger," Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said. "Politicizing economic statistics is a self-defeating act," said Michael Madowitz, principal economist at the Roosevelt Institute's Roosevelt Forward. "Credibility is far easier to lose than rebuild, and the credibility of America's economic data is the foundation on which we've built the strongest economy in the world," he added.
