OT7 Finals: Garcia's takeaways from Saturday's action

NBC Sports3 days ago
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The pool play rounds of the 2025 OT7 Finals are now behind us as more of the nation's top prospects turned heads in South Florida on Saturday. Rivals was again on hand and provided some fresh takeaways from the action.
OT7 FINALS: Recruiting Rumor Mill | Top performers from opening day

CLASS OF 2027 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State
The initial day of OT7 featured play-making from every position, but the quarterbacks were especially dominant on Saturday. We counted single-digit interceptions tossed on the entire day and night while high point totals were simultaneously achieved.
In amassing a top performers list, at least half of a top 10 would include passers who sprayed it all over the field from Dereon Coleman (Miami), Derrick Baker, Briggs Cherry (Louisville), Gavin Sidwar (Missouri), Maika Eugenio (Hawaii), Neimann Lawrence and many more.
The clear weather was an indicator of precise QB play on this day.
The big-time passer headed to Georgia has a big frame and the big arm attached to it, something he has showed off on routine at OT7. When power and/or distance is needed, the five-star is seemingly at his best.
He admitted there has been an up-and-down pace to his first club 7-on-7 event, but when Curtis has been right, it has looked plenty good to the point the Matt Stafford comparisons seem to make more and more sense.
His team has taken some tough losses, so he'll be up against elimination early on championship Sunday.

The former Heisman Trophy winner commands his own attention in any setting, and he doesn't run from it, but there should be more said and/or written in regards to his longevity and true involvement with C1N.
He is calling plays, letting his emotions fly and most importantly orchestrating perhaps the emerging favorite of this national tournament.
Newton's squad, captained by breakout quarterback prospect Derrick Baker, goes for a 'one-point gamble' after every score and it has executed on a high enough level to convert well more than not.
Among the stars of Saturday were a trio of 2028 recruits, from IMG Academy's do-it-all talent Eric McFarland, who kicked off the day with multiple scores and the type of yards after contact that already separates him as a national recruit, to more dominance from Brysen Wright on the outside. The Jacksonville native made the play of the day Friday and continued to get behind defenders on Saturday in another multi-score showing.
South Floridian Amir Sears continues to look like one of the more lengthy and instinctive players regardless of class or position, making plays at both wide receiver and defensive back.
There is just a buzz when the Lo-Pro quarterback, who is committed to Hawaii, takes the field. He pilots the nation's top 7-on-7 club, which exited the weekend as not only the No. 1 seed for the championship on Sunday, but ran through its schedule undefeated and scored the most points along the way.
Eugenio has the charisma to lead, but his play doesn't get spoken of enough. He processes like few passers nationally and can deliver to all three levels with both great accuracy and timing. Sure, he's small in stature and won't project like a potential No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick, but he just racks up wins at Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman High School and everywhere in between.
I wouldn't bet against him continuing to prove his worth at Hawaii either.

Tyreek Hill Trade Reaction Stirs Fans' Dream of Chiefs Reunion

Tyreek Hill Trade Reaction Stirs Fans' Dream of Chiefs Reunion originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Miami Dolphins dumped two valuable pieces to their roster by trading away All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey amid their mutual disagreements, and tight end Jonnu Smith amid his contract dispute. Advertisement Miami now sees two integral pieces of their last playoff team walk out the door, in turn closing their opportunity to compete in 2025 even more. Among the few bright spots remaining on this Dolphins' roster are the speedy receivers Jaylen Waddle and former Kansas City Chiefs great Tyreek Hill. Hill has issued some choice words this offseason about a trade involving himself, but his reaction to the Ramsey news conjured more feelings of sentiment rather than disgruntlement. The All-Pro deep threat reposted the trade with a viral meme from "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" in which Will Smith is standing in an empty home during the show's final episode. Advertisement Tyreek also added a crying-face emoji. By the looks of things, Hill is upset about losing teammates Ramsey and Smith, potentially feeling that the franchise is moving in a wrong direction with the roster. This could suggest he would want out too, but that's all speculative. As expected, Hill's response has gone viral and stirred eager Chiefs fans with hope that he could seek a reunion in KC if the Dolphins are giving up on any last playoff goals. 'Time to come home,' a fan wrote. A more hopelessly optimistic suggested Tyreek return on the veteran minimum. Even DraftKings Sportsbook hinted that it could be 'time to go back where it all started? 🤔' Advertisement As romantic a reunion as it would be, the Chiefs couldn't afford Hill's contract, even if they wanted to. Kansas City has just about $10 million in cap room left this offseason. Hill's cap hit is $27 million this year. The math isn't mathin'. There has been no formal indication that either team would want to follow through with this hypothetical, but if they were ... it still could become possible if Chiefs general manager convinces the Dolphins to cover a large chunk of Hill's salary upon a trade. That's more unlikely given that Miami just did that with a slice of Ramsey's deal. KC has a more pressing contract plan coming for offensive guard Trey Smith, who is expected to become one of the game's highest-paid linemen on his extension. Advertisement Regarding the receivers, Patrick Mahomes will still have plenty of weapons without bringing back Hill. Xavier Worthy, "Hollywood" Brown, and Rashee Rice are expected to be one of the league's most explosive trios if they can all remain healthy. The Chiefs should be focused on a storybook ending with another Lombardi Trophy in arms, not a reunion for a former player. Jeremiyah Love Named A Walter Camp Preseason All-American

Jeremiyah Love Named A Walter Camp Preseason All-American originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love had a breakout season in 2024, and that performance has set sky high expectations for him in 2025. Walter Camp released its preseason All-America team and Love was named a first team running back, further evidence of the expectations for the talented running back. Advertisement Love rushed for 1,125 yards and 17 touchdowns last season while averaging an impressive 6.9 yards per carry. Love rushed for a touchdown in every regular season game last fall and his 17 touchdowns were second most all-time in a single season for the Irish. His 6.9 yards per carry ranked 7th in the country and was just behind the 6.95 mark behind Heisman Trophy runner up Ashton Jeanty of Boise State. The St. Louis native was a big play back throughout the season, rushing for touchdowns of 98, 76, 68, 64, 48 and 39 yards. His 98-yard score was the first touchdown ever in the 12-team College Football Playoff. Love also had a 32-yard touchdown reception in the 31-24 win over Louisville. Join the Notre Dame Champions Lounge for the latest intel and analysis of the Fighting Irish! Heading into the 2025 season expectations are that Love will build on his sophomore season success. What that looks like remains to be seen, but building on his total yards production certainly falls into that category. That's true both as a runner and also as a pass catcher, an area where Love has spent plenty of time developing during the offseason. Advertisement Should Love finish the season on the first-team it would be an achievement not often seen at Notre Dame. In fact, the last running back to earn a first-team All-America honor was Allen Pinkett back in 1985. Pinkett also earned All-America honors in 1983. Running back Vagas Ferguson was Notre Dame's last consensus All-American, earning that honor in 1979. Notre Dame has had backs like Audric Estime, Jerome Bettis, Reggie Brooks and Autry Denson earn second or third team honors, but it has been decades since an Irish back earned first-team honors. Two Notre Dame opponents also made the first-team squad from Walter Camp. Miami (Fla.) offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa and Boise State offensive lineman Kage Casey were also named to the first team on offense. NC State tight end Justin Jolly and Texas A&M guard Ar'maj Reed-Adams were named to the second-team squad.
