Mint25-06-2025
The second advance estimates for horticultural crops in 2024-25 indicate a total production of 367.72 million tonnes (mt), a 3.7% increase compared to the previous year. This includes a projected rise in the production of key vegetables such as potato, onion, green chilli, bottle guard and fruit.
The estimates were released by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare on Wednesday.
Releasing the data, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union agriculture minister, said that the total area under horticulture crops witness an increase of 1.81 lakh hectares to 29.26 million hectares and the country witness record production of 367.72 mt.
The matter assumes significance as the increase in the production of horticulture crops (fruit, and vegetables) can play a significant role in easing inflation, especially food inflation. May's All India Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) shows a provisional 0.99% year-on-year inflation. Corresponding inflation rate for rural and urban are 0.95% and 0.96%, respectively.
A sharp decline of 79 basis points is observed in food inflation in May in comparison to April. The food inflation in May is the lowest since October 2021.
According to the ministry, production of vegetables is estimated to have increased 6.11% to 219.67 mt in 2024-25, from 207.02 mt in the year prior. The increase in production is mainly due to an increase in potato, onion, green chilli and bottle guard output.
Production of fruit is estimated to have increased to 114.51 mt in 2024-25, a nominal increase of 1.36% over the last year. The country is likely to witness an increase in production of watermelon, mangoes, banana, mausami and papaya.
In vegetables, production of potatoes is projected at 60.17 mt in 2024-25, which is 3.12 mt more than the same period last year, while production of onion is projected at 30.77 mt in 2024-25, almost 27% more than 2023-24.
The estimates showed that tomato production in 2024-25 season is estimated at 20.75 mt, which is slightly lower than the previous year's 21.32 mt.
Overall, the area under horticulture crops is seen to have increased marginally to 29.26 million hectares from 29.08 million hectares in the year before.

Build ‘Viksit Gaon' to achieve Viksit Bharat goal by 2047: Minister

Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, Dr Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, on Monday called for a renewed push to transform villages into 'Viksit Gaon' (developed villages), as a necessary step towards achieving the goal of a 'Viksit Bharat' (developed India) by 2047. Speaking at the first meeting of the performance review committee of the Ministry of Rural Development here, Dr Sekhar said that a future where every rural family lives in a pucca house with basic amenities, every village is connected by quality roads, every youth has employment opportunities, and every woman is empowered and financially independent, is not a dream but an achievable reality. He said that to realise this vision, the Ministry must move forward with fresh energy, innovative thinking, and deep commitment. 'We are not just implementing schemes, we are writing the next chapter of India's growth story,' Dr Sekhar said, crediting the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cabinet Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for the remarkable progress made in rural development. Highlighting the success of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), Dr Sekhar said it has become a powerful tool against rural unemployment and distress migration, especially during the agricultural lean seasons. He said with an annual investment between Rs 90,000 to Rs 1,00,000 crore, the scheme generates over 250 crore person-days of work annually, with more than 36 crore job cards issued and 15 crore active workers. The minister stressed the need to move beyond wage payments and focus on creating durable and productive assets through diversified projects. He also called for community involvement in selecting works and greater convergence with other development schemes. On the housing front, Dr Sekhar informed that more than 3.22 crore pucca houses have been built under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana - Gramin (PMAY-G), helping families living in kutcha or dilapidated homes. He said the government has set a target of building an additional 2 crore houses by 2029, and encouraged the use of eco-friendly, cost-effective, and region-specific construction technologies. Dr Sekhar also underlined the success of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), under which over 7.56 lakh kilometres of rural roads have been constructed so far. He suggested the creation of state-level road maintenance funds, use of community-based monitoring systems, and innovative financing models to ensure sustainability of road infrastructure.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi to outline vision for India's renewable energy future

Mumbai: India's clean energy ambitions are set to take centre stage as Shri Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi, Hon'ble Union Minister of New & Renewable Energy, Government of India, will attend the IVCA Renewable Energy Summit 2025 as Chief Guest and deliver the Keynote Address. The event, hosted by the Indian Venture and Alternate Capital Association (IVCA), will take place on July 15 in Mumbai. Bringing together leaders from across the private equity, venture capital, and alternative investment landscape, the summit is a national platform to galvanise climate-aligned private capital in support of India's energy transition goals. Organised in collaboration with Avendus, EAAA Alternatives, and Singularity Capital, the event will convene policymakers, institutional investors, family offices, climate-tech entrepreneurs, and financial innovators. Speaking ahead of the event, Shri Pralhad Joshi said, "India's clean energy transformation is not just an environmental goal--it is a national mission. From renewable generation to battery storage and green manufacturing, private capital will be key to achieving our 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity target by 2030. I look forward to addressing the IVCA Renewable Energy Summit and reinforcing the government's commitment to building a robust, investment-friendly ecosystem for sustainable growth." India's clean energy sector is witnessing unprecedented momentum. In 2024, renewables accounted for 83% of total power sector investments, while non-fossil fuel capacity climbed to 44%, underscoring the country's strong trajectory toward the 2030 target. India now ranks among the top three countries globally in renewable energy capacity addition. As the government ramps up efforts to scale solar, wind, storage, and green hydrogen infrastructure, it has placed a renewed emphasis on public-private partnerships. Policy innovations, including viability gap funding for battery storage, incentives for offshore wind development, and grid expansion across new geographies, are designed to enable institutional capital participation at scale. This creates a clear opportunity for Private Equity, Venture Capital, and AIFs to partner in India's next phase of green growth. IVCA President Rajat Tandon said, "We are privileged to have Hon'ble Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi join us at the summit. His visionary leadership--whether in scaling renewable energy investments, battery storage, or creating a supportive policy ecosystem--has been instrumental in shaping India's green growth story. His presence reaffirms the government's commitment to enabling public-private partnerships that drive sustainable, long-term impact."

Centre to provide technology to private factories to ramp up rare earth magnet production after China's decision to impose export controls

NYT News Service Private factories to produce rare earth magnet in India (Representational Image) The Centre is trying to make available technology in three to four months to different private factories to ramp up rare earth magnets production in India, said Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy. "We used to be 100% dependent on China for permanent magnets of the rare earths. But recently, China has refused to supply. With this view, the Indian government is making efforts for permanent magnet manufacturing," Kishan Reddy told ANI. "Our mining ministry's institute in Hyderabad has made efforts and prepared a permanent magnet processing unit with equipment. After three to four months, we will try to manufacture permanent magnets by giving the technology to different private factories. For this, the Indian government has also started some PLI schemes to encourage it. We are paying attention to this subject," he said that PM Modi has continuously discussed the production of magnets in India. "Recently, during his (PM Modi) visit to 5 countries, discussions were held with different countries on this subject. The raw material of rare earth is also available in less quantity in India. Importing that raw material, processing it, making permanent magnets for it, which is used from cell phones to space technology, including defence, there is a huge demand for this. The Indian government is working seriously for this. This scheme has also been brought under it," he said. The central government has earmarked Rs 1,345 crore to incentivise rare earth magnets production in India, aimed at building domestic capacity when there are reports of global short this April, China announced a decision to implement export controls on certain rare earth-related items, pushing a supply shortage across the world, including was in touch with the Chinese side, seeking predictability in the supply of rare earth metals -- which had been put under the export controls regime by the Xi administration. China's overwhelming control of global rare earth processing - commanding over 90 per cent of the world's magnet production capacity - has created significant vulnerabilities for industries worldwide. These materials are critical across multiple sectors, including automobiles, home appliances, and clean energy systems. Beyond China, there are only a few alternative suppliers of critical minerals. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the setting up of the Critical Mineral Mission in the Union Budget for 2024-25 on July 23, 2024. The Union Cabinet in January 2025 approved the launch of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) with an expenditure of Rs 16,300 crore and an expected investment of Rs 18,000 crore by Public Sector Undertakings.
