PM Modi congratulates Amit Shah on becoming longest-serving home minister

Business Standard11 hours ago
Addressing the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Members of Parliament (MPs) on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has become the longest-serving incumbent in his ministry, surpassing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran L K Advani. 'It is just the beginning,' the PM said, adding that there is a long way to go for Shah — a remark that led some MPs to speculate on its possible implications.
Shah took charge of the Ministry of Home Affairs on May 30, 2019, and continued as the country's home minister in 2024. On Tuesday, he became the longest-serving home minister with a tenure of six years and 66 days, surpassing Congress leader Gobind Ballabh Pant, who held the post for six years and 65 days between 1955 and 1961. Advani was home minister for six years and 64 days between 1998 and 2004. Shah reached this milestone on the sixth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, which Parliament repealed on August 5, 2019.
Currently, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who turned 74 in July, ranks second in the Union Council of Ministers. He has served in the first and second Modi-led NDA governments between 2014 and 2024. After the PM, he was the first Cabinet minister to take the oath of office in 2014, 2019, and again in 2024.
At Tuesday's meeting, MPs felicitated the PM for his "exceptional leadership" in marshalling India's response following the Pahalgam terror attack. A resolution passed at the meeting praised the armed forces for their "unmatched courage" and "unwavering commitment" during Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev. Singh garlanded Modi, with Shah and Union Minister and BJP president J P Nadda by his side. After the meeting, Singh led MPs from the Parliament Library Building — the venue — to the Parliament House.
The PM told BJP and allied MPs that they should participate actively in all programmes as part of the ruling coalition, irrespective of their party's individual strength in a particular region. In some states, the BJP may not be as strong as its allies, but all parties must act together as NDA members, he said. Sources present at the meeting said the PM's broader message was about maintaining cohesion and coordination within the alliance.
Leaders of NDA allies joined BJP leaders in the front row at the meeting. The BJP and its allies currently govern in 19 out of 28 states and are preparing for the upcoming Assembly polls in Bihar.
The NDA Parliamentary Party meeting was last held on July 2, 2024. At Tuesday's gathering, Modi also noted the historical significance of August 5. Article 370 was abrogated on this day in 2019, and the ground-breaking ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya took place on August 5, 2020.
The NDA resolution paid tribute to the 26 civilians who lost their lives in the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, carried out by terrorists linked to Pakistan. It also praised Modi for his leadership.
The NDA is yet to announce its candidate for the vice-presidential election, scheduled for September 9. The last date for filing nominations is August 21. The BJP is also expected to elect its next president soon.

Bombay High Court denies bail to ex-BJP MLA for shooting inside police station

Calling the act 'shocking' and 'unacceptable in a civilised society', the Bombay High Court on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) rejected the bail plea of former BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad, accused of opening fire on Shiv Sena leader Mahesh Gaikwad inside a police station last year. Justice Amit Borkar, while refusing bail, underscored the gravity of the incident and observed, 'The allegations against the applicant are of extremely grave and disturbing nature. It is the specific case of the prosecution that the applicant, who is a former elected representative (MLA), brazenly entered the cabin of the Senior Police Inspector at Hill Line Police Station, armed with a loaded revolver. It is alleged that he opened fire and discharged two rounds of bullets upon the injured Mahesh Gaikwad, with the clear intention of causing his death. It is further alleged that he also aimed and fired at another person present, Rahul Patil, thereby attempting to cause him fatal injuries as well.' Ganpat Gaikwad, a former MLA from the Kalyan (East) constituency, filed a regular bail application under Section 483 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS), in connection with a case registered at Hill Line Police Station, Ulhasnagar. He is accused of offences under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 120(B) (criminal conspiracy), 143, 147, 148, 149 (unlawful assembly and rioting), 109 (abetment), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace) of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, along with Section 30 of the Arms Act. According to the prosecution, on February 2, 2024, the two gathered at Hill Line Police Station, each demanding criminal action against the other. Around 9:30 p.m., Shiv Sena leader Mahesh Gaikwad, along with Rahul Patil and complainant Chainu Jadhav, was inside the Senior Police Inspector's cabin when Ganpat Gaikwad and his associate Vicky Ganatra entered. A heated argument broke out between the two factions. As tensions escalated, Senior PI Anil Jagtap stepped out to control the situation outside the cabin. The prosecution has alleged that after emptying all bullets from the revolver, the applicant noticed that the injured Mahesh was still alive. At this point, the Ganpat is stated to have sat on the Mahesh's chest and inflicted multiple forceful blows on his head using the butt of the revolver, a part not meant for attack, further aggravating the assault. 'Such an act, if taken to be true, demonstrates not only an intention to kill but also reveals the applicant's determination to ensure fatal consequences, irrespective of the location and presence of police officers,' Justice Borkar said, adding that these allegations, viewed in the context of the place where the incident occurred, inside the cabin of a senior police officer within the four corners of a police station, add a serious dimension to the entire episode. 'A police station is presumed to be a secure place for redressal of disputes and protection of life and liberty. If a violent crime of this scale is allowed to take place within such a protected zone, it shakes the confidence of the public in the ability of law enforcement machinery to maintain peace and order. A person, more so a public representative, engaging in such conduct reflects not only disregard for the rule of law but also sends a message of fear and intimidation to the citizens at large,' the court observed. While passing the order, the Judge said that the court is conscious of the fact that an accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, at the stage of considering bail, the court cannot remain oblivious to the gravity of the offence and the manner in which it was committed. 'The nature of the allegations, the place of occurrence, and the conduct of the applicant, as narrated in the FIR and corroborated prima facie by CCTV footage and medical evidence, all suggest that the applicant's act was not one of mere provocation or sudden anger, but a deliberate and violent assault carried out with aggression. Such circumstances militate against the grant of bail at this stage,' the order read. The prosecution has placed significant reliance on CCTV footage from within the police station and the footage has been made part of the case record and, on initial examination, prima facie supports the account given by the first informant and injured eyewitnesses. The court noted that such electronic evidence plays a critical role at the bail stage. The ballistic report submitted by the Forensic Science Laboratory has confirmed that the bullets recovered from the injured victim's body were fired from the revolver seized from the applicant. This scientific evidence forms a critical link in the prosecution's chain of events, establishing a strong prima facie connection between the weapon and the injuries sustained. Ganpat Gaikwad claimed the incident was the result of a sudden fit of rage, lacking any premeditated intent. However, the footage clearly showed him entering the police station armed with a loaded revolver, which itself suggests conscious preparation, not an impulsive emotional outburst, the court said. The prosecution also relied on an audio recording of an interview the applicant allegedly gave to a private news channel, in which he is heard admitting to his intent to kill Mahesh Gaikwad and showing no remorse. This admission was made voluntarily and in the public domain, not under duress. The court noted that it reveals a mindset of justification rather than repentance, reinforcing the prosecution's position that the act was deliberate, intentional, and committed with impunity. The court found that the applicant's explanation lacks credibility, and the material on record clearly discloses a premeditated and violent act. At this stage, such conduct cannot be condoned, and the bail plea deserves to be rejected. 'The offence alleged against the applicant, if ultimately proved, is not only heinous but also indicative of a complete disregard for the rule of law and public safety. The manner in which the offence is alleged to have been committed, the location where it occurred, and the applicant's own post-incident conduct raise serious concerns regarding the possibility of obstruction of justice if he is released on bail/. In such circumstances, the Court finds that no case is made out for grant of bail at this stage,' the order said.

Kashmir issue main source of tension between India, Pakistan: PM Shehbaz Sharif

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Tuesday said that the Kashmir issue is the main source of tension with India, as he criticised New Delhi's action to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian government abrogated Article 370 on August 5, 2019, bifurcating the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories — Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Pakistan has been observing the day as Youm-i-Istehsal to register its protest against India's action. Shehbaz said the Kashmir issue was the main source of tension between the two countries. 'The will and aspirations of the Kashmiri people, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions, are the only path forward,' he added. He said that the just resolution of the Kashmir issue was a key pillar of Pakistan's foreign policy and urged the international community to play a role to help reverse India's "unilateral" actions of August 5, 2019. Separately, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said Islamabad desires friendly relations with all neighbouring countries and prefers dialogue and diplomacy over confrontation. Addressing a rally in Islamabad, Dar said Pakistan's armed forces and its people are "fully capable of delivering a resolute response to any act of aggression." Special walks and events were held across all four provinces and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Pakistani missions abroad also organised special events to mark the occasion.

Netanyahu hints at wider war in Gaza, former military & spy chiefs object

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted at wider military action in devastated Gaza on Tuesday, even as former Israeli army and intelligence chiefs called for an end to the nearly 22-month war. The new pressure on Netanyahu came as Gaza's Health Ministry said the Palestinian death toll had surpassed 61,000. Health officials reported new deaths of hungry Palestinians seeking food at distribution points. As desperation mounts, the Israeli defence body coordinating aid announced a deal with local merchants to improve aid deliveries. Among those speaking out were former leaders of Israel's Shin Bet internal security service, Mossad spy agency and the military -- and also ex-Prime Minister Ehud Barak. In a video posted to social media this week, they said far-right members of the government are holding Israel "hostage" in prolonging the conflict. Netanyahu's objectives in Gaza are "a fantasy", Yoram Cohen, former head of Shin Bet, said in the video. "If anyone imagines that we can reach every terrorist and every pit and every weapon, and in parallel bring our hostages home -- I think it is impossible," he said. Possible tougher military action Netanyahu convened his Security Cabinet to direct the military on the war's next stage, hinting that even tougher action was possible. However, the meeting wrapped up hours later without any announcements about Israel's plans. US President Donald Trump, asked by a reporter whether he supported the reoccupation of Gaza, said he was not aware of the "suggestion" but that "it is going to be pretty much up to Israel". Netanyahu said his objectives include defeating Hamas, releasing all 50 remaining hostages and ensuring Gaza never again threatens Israel after the Hamas-led 2023 attack sparked the war. Israeli media reported disagreements between Netanyahu and the army chief, Lt Gen. Eyal Zamir, on how to proceed. The reports, citing anonymous officials in Netanyahu's office, said the prime minister was pushing the army, which controls about three quarters of Gaza, to conquer the entire territory -- a step that could endanger hostages, deepen the humanitarian crisis and further isolate Israel internationally. Zamir reportedly opposes this step and could step down or be pushed out if it is approved. Israeli officials did not respond to requests for comment on the reports. More aid-seekers killed Health officials in Gaza said Israeli forces opened fire on Tuesday morning toward Palestinians seeking aid and in targeted attacks in central and southern Gaza, killing at least 45 people. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military, which has said after previous shootings around aid distribution that it only fired warning shots at people who approached its forces. The dead include at least 26 people killed in the Morag Corridor, an Israeli military zone where looters and desperate crowds unloaded UN aid convoys. Six people were killed in Teina, near a road leading to a site run by the Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, an American contractor. Morgue records at the nearby Nasser Hospital, which received the bodies, detailed the deaths and locations. The hospital is part of the Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between militants and civilians but says roughly half the dead from the war have been women and children. The ministry operates under the Hamas government. The United Nations and other international organisations see it as the most reliable source of casualty data. Sami Arafat, a father of seven, described the chaos in the Morag Corridor early on Tuesday, saying crowds rushed toward a convoy of UN aid trucks and Israeli forces fired toward them. "There are no buildings to shelter us from the shooting," he said. "The area is all rubble." He said looters brandishing knives climbed aboard the trucks first and tore into the aid boxes, taking sugar that could be resold at the market while leaving less expensive rice behind. Elsewhere in central Gaza, Al-Awda hospital said it received the bodies of six Palestinians who were killed when Israeli troops targeted crowds near another GHF aid distribution site. The GHF said there were no incidents at its sites on Tuesday and that most of the recent violence has been linked to UN aid deliveries. Several hundred Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since May while heading toward food-distribution sites, airdropped parcels and aid convoys, according to witnesses, local health officials and the UN human rights office. Israel's military says it only has fired warning shots and disputes the toll. The Israeli defence body in charge of coordinating aid, COGAT, said on social media there will be a "gradual and controlled renewal of the entry of goods through the private sector in Gaza". It said a limited number of local merchants were approved for the plan. 'Stained with humiliation and blood' Mohammed Qassas from Khan Younis said his young children are so hungry that he is forced to storm aid trucks, which rarely reach warehouses these days because they are stopped by hungry crowds. "How am I supposed to feed them? No one has mercy," he said on Monday. "If we fight, we get the food. If we do not fight, we do not get anything." It has become routine to see men returning from aid-seeking carrying bodies as well as sacks of flour. Israel's blockade and military offensive have made it nearly impossible to safely deliver aid, contributing to the territory's slide toward famine. Aid groups say Israel's week-old measures to allow more aid in are far from sufficient. Families of hostages in Gaza fear starvation affects them too, and blame Hamas. As international alarm has mounted, several countries have airdropped aid over Gaza. The UN and aid groups call such drops costly and dangerous for residents, and say they deliver far less aid than trucks. 'The entire world is watching' Palestinians gather daily for funeral prayers. "We are unarmed people who cannot endure this," shouted Maryam Abu Hatab in the yard of Nasser hospital. Ekram Nasr said her son was shot dead while seeking aid near the Morag Corridor. "I had to go alone to carry my son," she said, tears in her eyes. "I collected the remains of my son like the meat of dogs from the streets." "The entire world is watching," she added. "They are watching our patience, our strength and our faith in God. But we no longer have the power to endure.
