Resident Evil Requiem trailer reveals release date and new main character

Resident Evil Requiem trailer reveals release date and new main character

Metro07-06-2025
The game previously known only as Resident Evil 9 has finally been revealed and it features a deep cut reference to Resident Evil Outbreak.
Summer Game Fest 2025 was a very low-key affair, with hardly any new AAA game reveals. There was still lots of interesting looking titles, such as Mortal Shell 2 and Stranger than Heaven, but the biggest title by far was Capcom's Resident Evil Requiem, aka Resident Evil 9.
Technically, the game was announced last summer but nothing had been seen of it up till now and even the reveal trailer left a lot more questions than answers… except when it comes to the release date.
Requiem will be out on February 27, just a few weeks before the franchise's 30th anniversary, and the new game is promising a shift in 'tone and gameplay', as well as a return to Racoon City.
Capcom didn't detail what the changes would entail but rumours have long suggested the game will be ditching the first person view of the last couple of titles and going back to the traditional third person, over the shoulder view.
That wasn't confirmed by the reveal, but it did seem to imply that. As for the tone, it's hard to say but it appeared to be more serious, when compared to the schlocky, more fantastical nature of Resident Evil Village.
Resident Evil's ability to change and evolve is one of the secrets of its success but it was still nice to see the police station from Racoon City again, or at least what's left of if after the place got nuked at the end of Resident Evil 2.

It was impossible to tell what's going on with the plot, but the trailer focused on new character Grace Ashcroft, a 'technical analyst' at the FBI whose mother seems to be Alyssa Ashcroft.
If that doesn't ring a bell then don't worry, as she was only ever in the two Resident Evil Outbreak games – online co-op titles from the PlayStation 2 era, that weren't particularly successful (the first one wasn't even online in Europe).
The trailer refers to Alyssa being killed in a hotel eight years earlier, which was not a part of Outbreak's story. As the trailer begins, Grace is writing a report on an 'unidentified disease' that has claimed a fourth victim, with Alyssa presumably being the fifth.
It's hard to draw anything too conclusive from the rest of the trailer, but there's a new monster dropping down from the ceiling in one shot, a possible shot of a zombie at the end, and what looks like the Raincoat Killer from Deadly Premonition at one point.
There's also a guy with an obviously evil voice, who could be Albert Wesker, who's describing someone – possibly Grace – as the 'chosen one'.
Previous rumours have suggested that Leon S. Kennedy and/or Jill Valentine are the main playable characters in Requiem but there was no sign of that in the teaser. Rumours have also claimed the game will be open world but the trailer didn't even hint at that, although it didn't rule it out either.
No doubt all that will be the subject of the next trailer, which is presumably coming relatively soon, given the game is due out in a little over eight months.
There's a small possibility it could be at the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday but that's unlikely, as it wasn't at the State of Play on Wednesday and Capcom probably don't want to play favourites. The trailer confirms the game for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.

Everyone should play Rematch: the best new football game in years

A reader enjoys Rematch on Game Pass and insists that while it's not trying to compete with EA Sports FC it is the best arcade style game in a long time. If Rocket League ditched the cars, took International Superstar Soccer and mashed them together, the result would be Rematch! This new Xbox Game Pass title from Sloclap – the minds behind Sifu – is a wild, stylish, and surprisingly strategic take on football, that's less about realism and more about flair, chaos, and pure arcade joy. Forget everything you know about traditional football sims. Rematch throws out the rulebook, literally. No offsides, no fouls, no referees. Here, you control a single player in third person view, trying to out-dribble, out-pass, and out-style your opponents in six minute matches that feel like a cross between a street tournament and a martial arts showdown. If you love a good sliding tackle without the consequences of a red card, you will be right at home here. The controls are tight but demanding. Shooting feels like aiming in a third person shooter and passing requires finesse and timing. It's not pick-up and play easy, but once you get the hang of it, the satisfaction of threading a perfect through ball or pulling off a last-ditch sliding tackle is immense. Every player has the same stats, so it's all about skill, positioning, and teamwork. You will need patience, but if you have it, it will pay off in the end. Teamwork is where Rematch really shines – or stumbles, depending on your squad. Because you only control one player, communication is key. A well-timed 'Pass!' shout or a humble 'Sorry!' after a botched shot can make or break your team's chemistry. But when your teammate decides to go full Messi, and dribble through everyone (and fails), expect a flurry of sarcastic emotes and a few rage quits. I have rage quit more than once and probably caused others to do the same. If you think you can win at this game alone, think again. Still, when it clicks – when your team moves like a unit, covering space, calling for crosses, and pulling off slick one-twos – it's magic. You'll find yourself grinning like a kid playing five-a-side in the park, minus the scraped knees and need for TCP and plasters! Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. Visually, Rematch is a treat. The anime-inspired graphics give it a vibrant, kinetic energy. Players move with exaggerated swagger, and the arenas are compact, colourful, and designed for wall-bouncing trick shots and last-second saves. It's like playing football inside a neon-lit skate park. It's similarities to Rocket League are evident throughout. The game's Season Zero is already live, with ranked play and seasonal content promising fresh modes and cosmetics. While there's no real-world team licensing the customisation options are still fun, and more are on the way so hopefully we will get more variety with updates as they arrive. Also, the learning curve might scare off casual players. The controls are intuitive once mastered, but the early hours can feel like trying to juggle a football while blindfolded. And while the lack of commentary adds to the street football vibe, a bit more audio flair wouldn't hurt – it can feel very quiet and a pumping soundtrack would be most welcome. Despite its quirks, Rematch is a bold, refreshing spin on the football genre. It's not trying to be EA Sports FC, but rather it is carving its own lane, and doing so with style, swagger, and a whole lot of slide tackles. Whether you're a football fanatic or just looking for a new multiplayer obsession, this one's worth lacing up for. Grab your mates, stretch those thumbs, and get ready to shout 'One more game!' until the sun comes up. Rematch is here and it's a beautiful mess – in the best way possible. ‘I tried out a pair of 'pyjama jeans' and now I can't go back to regular denim'

Mirror's shopping writer Grace put a pair of "pyjama jeans" from a Taylor Swift-approved viral brand to the test to see if they could live up to proper denim Denim is easily the most-worn fabric in my wardrobe, especially through spring and summer. I love a good pair of jeans and am forever searching for the perfect fit. Even though I reach for them almost daily, I've been finding them increasingly uncomfortable lately. However, I'm still not ready to give them up. I tested out a pair of"pyjama jeans" from River Island earlier this year, and couldn't believe just how comfy they were. And now I've found another pair that are potentially even comfier, while still looking like a normal pair of denim jeans. The style in question are the Halara Flex™ Asymmetric Low Rise Baggy Wide Leg Jeans, currently on sale for £39.95 down from £58.95. I hadn't heard too much about this brand before trying them out, but they actually have the Taylor Swift seal of approval. Taylor Swift made her first Coachella appearance in six years with her beau Travis Kelce in 2024 and was spotted wearing a TikTok viral £40 skirt. The Breezeful™ High Waisted Pleated 2-in-1 Side Pocket Skirt from Halara gained a huge cult following on TikTok last year thanks to its unusual garter detail. The brand is mostly known for its activewear and loungewear, so it's no suprise to seem them branching out into denim while keeping comfort at the forefront. When I first opened up the asymmetric jeans, I was a little skeptical as they felt so soft and stretchy, just like a pair of jogging bottoms, and so I was unsure if they would even look like jeans on. However, as I soon as I slipped into them I had my mind changed. They honestly looked just as good as other denim pieces I own, but felt ten times comfier. I also appreciated the asymmetric button detailing, as previous pyjama-style denim I've tried have kept it pretty simple with design details. But Halara has so many trendy styles to choose from in the Flex Range, from cargo-style jeans to maxi skirts and trendy corset waistcoats. My only criticims would be that the inside and outside button feel a little flimsy, like they could ping off easily. Despite this, however, I have worn the jeans multiple times and all buttons are still in tact. If you want to test out the OG "sweatpant jeans" Rag and Bone's Miramar Wide-Leg Jeans are available to shop on Selfridge's for £195. Alternatively, New Look has some Blue Drawstring Waist Denim Trousers for £26.99 that feel as comfy as trousers but have a denim-effect.
