Strong cooperation between KBS and Kelantan drives SUKMA 2028 preparations
Minister Hannah Yeoh said a meeting had been held between the KBS secretary-general and the Kelantan state secretary, and cooperation between both parties is now progressing well.
'We've already announced that Kelantan will be the host of SUKMA in 2028, and the KBS secretary-general has met with the Kelantan state secretary. Cooperation is now progressing smoothly.
'The progress of all stadiums and facilities under development is also on schedule, so I don't foresee any issues,' she told reporters after officiating at the ASEAN Youth Robot Challenge 2025 competition here today.
Hannah added that the Bukit Merbau Sports Complex is expected to be completed by September 2027, and the project has currently reached 17.84 per cent construction progress according to the project timeline.
It was reported that the construction of the RM180 million sports complex is part of the MADANI Government's efforts to provide the Kelantan people with quality sports facilities aimed at producing more new talent to bring glory to the nation on the world stage.
Hannah also highlighted the need to upgrade the Sultan Yahya Petra Swimming Pool, one of the oldest pools in Kelantan, which was built in 1972.
'We've identified a clear need to upgrade and improve the existing pool to ensure it is safe for use, especially for young children.
'This facility belongs to the Ministry of Education, but KBS will try to assist because we are conducting free swimming classes for B40 children there (in Kelantan),' she said.

Minister urges sports associations to settle squabbles ahead of SEA Games
KOTA BARU: Sports associations are urged to immediately resolve any internal issues that may arise before the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, scheduled from Dec 7 to 19. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said early resolution of the matter is very important so that it would not affect the focus and preparations of the country's athletes who will compete on the international stage. "Currently, all preparations are underway, so I would like to call on all sports associations if there are any internal issues, to resolve them immediately to ensure the smooth running and spirit of the national team is not affected. "We know that time is running out before the SEA Games in Thailand later this year. Therefore, we hope that the country's athletes can take full advantage of this opportunity as preparation for the next Games in Kuala Lumpur in 2027 and the Olympic Games expected to be held in 2028," she said. She told Bernama after officiating the Youth Camp @ Rakan Prihatin 2025, at Pantai Cahaya Bulan, here today, which was also attended by the Ministry of Youth and Sports secretary-general, Datuk Dr Nagulendran Kangayatkarasu and National Youth and Sports Department director-general, Azura Abidin. Meanwhile, commenting on the appointment of Abdul Rashid Yaakub as chief executive officer (CEO) of the Secretariat of the Malaysian SEA Games (MASOC) and the 2027 Asean Para Games Organisers, Hannah said the appointment is very appropriate based on his extensive experience in the world of sports in the country. "Abdul Rashid has a strong background in the National Sports Council (MSN), including "his role during the organisation of the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, and he has also worked with several other states such as Sarawak. So, we are confident that he understands the ins and outs and challenges of managing large-scale sporting events," she said. Abdul Rashid, 61, who is also the former director-general of MSN, officially assumed the position of CEO of MASOC and Para Asean 2027 on July 1 and will lead the main secretariat responsible for coordinating all aspects of preparations for the regional biennial games. – BERNAMA

KBS supports bringing in heritage athletes
KOTA BHARU: The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) supports the efforts of any sports association including football, aquatics and swimming to bring in heritage athletes, as long as they comply with the set international regulations. Its Minister, Hannah Yeoh said each sport has its own international regulations whether relating to heritage or naturalised players and her ministry does not have any problem regarding the matter. "We follow international regulations, if Fifa (Federation of International Football Associations) allows it, we are ok and if 'World Aquatics' allows heritage athletes, we are also 'ok' because it is according to the regulations approved by their respective sports bodies. "We give priority to local talent but every team that comes out to compete must want to win... as long as they want to win and follow the rules, we will support them," she told reporters after officiating the Asean Youth Robotics 2025 (ASEAN Y-RoboC' 25), here today. However, Hannah reminded all sports associations not to make the step of taking naturalised or heritage athletes an easy step to find victory because KBS has channelled an allocation of RM1 million through the National Sports Council (MSN) for the purpose of developing grassroots athletes, especially for the Olympic Games since 2023. "In fact, efforts to bring in heritage or naturalised players also need to follow the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN)," he said. Meanwhile, regarding the contract issue between the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and world No. 3 women's doubles Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, Hannah said the issue did not affect them in the Road to Gold (RTG) programme because their party always supports all athletes who have been listed as gold prospects at the 2028 Olympic Games. – BERNAMA
