Royals hope Seth Lugo's return can stop Tigers' roll

The Kansas City Royals are hoping for a boost Friday from the expected mound return of right-hander Seth Lugo.
It comes just in time for a second go-around against right-hander Casey Mize and the American League Central-leading Detroit Tigers, winners of four straight.
All-Stars Lugo (3-4, 3.02 ERA) and left-hander Cole Ragans both went on the injured list May 17, but the former is slated to return for this important series opener against a division rival. The 35-year-old Lugo has recorded quality starts in six of his nine 2025 outings and owns a 2.41 ERA in six starts at home.
However, a sprained middle finger has kept Lugo off a big-league mound since he allowed three runs on two homers, plus four other hits, while striking out five without a walk in six innings of a 3-1 loss to Boston on May 11.
'At this point of the season, it is better to get healthy and be 100 percent out there than try to push through,' Lugo said.
His return comes at a perfect time for the Royals, who are amid a 6-11 stretch but avoided being swept by Cincinnati at home with Wednesday's 3-2 victory. Kansas City last won back-to-back home contests during a five-game winning streak from May 5-9.
It also comes against the Tigers, who are 17 games over .500 and just swept a three-game home series from San Francisco.
'We find different ways to win,' said Detroit manager A.J. Hinch, whose club took three of four from Kansas City during their first series from April 17-20.
'We've shown it over and over again that we're going to try to beat you with our 26 guys.'
Lugo yielded only a fifth-inning, three-run homer to Spencer Torkelson, along with four other hits, over 6 2/3 of a 3-1 defeat at Detroit on April 19. That was his first loss in five career starts opposite the Tigers, against whom he owns a 2.78 ERA.
During that April matchup, Lugo squared off with Mize (6-1, 2.45 ERA), who is off to the best start of his five-year, big-league career. He allowed only a Freddy Fermin homer, three other hits and a walk over seven innings against the Royals.
Mize, who also missed a little more than two weeks with a hamstring issue, returned Saturday versus Cleveland, allowing two runs -- one earned -- with four hits and a walk while striking out six over five innings of a 7-5 loss. All while also dealing with the flu.
'That was a gutsy performance by Casey,' Hinch said. 'His temperament was very methodical. Very even-keeled.'
Kansas City's Maikel Garcia is batting .380 during a 13-game hitting streak but went 0-for-3 versus Mize last month. However, teammate Jonathan India was 3-for-4 in that contest and has posted back-to-back two-hit games.
Detroit's Javier Baez is 1-for-11 with six strikeouts in the last five games, but he's a career .353 hitter versus Lugo. Teammate Gleyber Torres is batting .333 with three homers and 12 RBIs in his last 10 games at Kansas City.

Randy Arozarena's two homers lead Mariners past Royals

Field Level Media 05 Jul 2025, 09:38 GMT+10 (Photo credit: Joe Nicholson-Imagn Images) Randy Arozarena hit two homers and drove in four runs and Cal Raleigh went deep for the major-league-leading 33rd time this season as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting Kansas City Royals 6-2 on Monday. Mariners starter George Kirby (2-4) allowed one run on three hits over six innings as the Mariners earned their second victory in a row and their sixth in the past nine games. The right-hander didn't walk a batter and struck out five. The Royals lost for the eighth time in nine games. Kansas City starter Michael Wacha (4-8) cruised through the first 3 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on one hit, before Arozarena went deep to right-center to tie the score at 1-all. The Mariners broke the tie with four runs in the fifth. Cole Young, J.P. Crawford and Julio Rodriguez began the inning with singles to load the bases. Raleigh gave Seattle the lead with a sacrifice fly to right before Arozarena hit a three-run shot to center to make it 5-1. Wacha went five innings and allowed five runs on eight hits, with two walks and one strikeout. Raleigh added to the Mariners' lead with a blast to center leading off the bottom of the seventh against Royals reliever Daniel Lynch IV. Bobby Witt Jr. drove in both runs for the Royals, who have scored just 20 runs over their past nine games -- with nine of those coming in their lone victory in that span. Kansas City scored its first run with a two-out rally in the third inning. Kyle Isbel and Johnathan India singled before Witt hit a liner off the glove of diving second baseman Cole Young to plate Isbel. The Royals added a run in the eighth off Trent Thornton after loading the bases with one out as John Rave singled, Isbel walked and India was hit by a pitch. Rave scored as Witt grounded into a forceout. --Field Level Media

Royals, home losing streak over, look to win series vs. Dodgers

(Photo credit: Peter Aiken-Imagn Images) With their franchise-tying home losing streak in the past, the Kansas City Royals now get to focus on taking a series from the reigning World Series champions. The Royals can post their first winning home series in nearly two months with a second consecutive victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday afternoon. One day after losing 5-4 to match the club-record 11-game home losing streak, Kansas City rapped out 14 hits, highlighted by a three-run homer and two-run double from Vinnie Pasquantino, to defeat Los Angeles 9-5 on Saturday. Desperately in need of offense, the Royals scored one more run than they totaled while losing their previous six games. 'A day we've been waiting for,' Pasquantino told FanDuel Sports Newtork after his five RBIs. 'We need to do it more often.' '(Saturday) felt like a nice step,' he added. 'Just keep moving forward.' Kansas City is 4-18 at home since last winning consecutive contests there as part of a four-game winning streak from May 5-9. Bobby Witt Jr. and Jonathan India each had four hits on Saturday, and Seth Lugo struck out eight over 5 2/3 scoreless innings despite allowing four hits and five walks against the potent Dodgers, who didn't threaten until a four-run ninth. Scheduled Kansas City starter Kris Bubic (6-5, 2.18 ERA) will hope for similar run support on Sunday. He owned a 1.45 ERA through his first 11 starts of 2025 but has a 4.37 ERA while going 1-3 since then. The left-hander did manage a quality start Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays, when he yielded four runs (two earned) and eight hits while striking out eight without a walk in six innings of a 5-1 defeat. 'He was good,' Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. 'His command wasn't quite as sharp early in the game. But he competes like crazy and gives us a chance.' Though this will be Bubic's first appearance versus the Los Angeles Dodgers, superstar Shohei Ohtani is 3-for-4 with a home run, double and two RBIs against him. Ohtani, who threw two scoreless innings in his third 2025 start on Saturday, went 0-for-4 at the plate, striking out three times. In the series opener on Friday, he was 2-for-3 with a triple, home run and two RBIs. Teammate Freddie Freeman, who is batting just .200 in June after a .410 clip in May, went 3-for-3 with two walks Saturday, including his first home run since May 11. However, Freeman is expected to have a planned day off Sunday but likely will be available late, if needed. Saturday's defeat snapped a five-game winning streak for Los Angeles, which has not lost back-to-back contests since June 6-7 at St. Louis. 'It never feels good to lose a game, but (Ohtani's pitching and Freeman's offense are) silver linings,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. 'We got to make the plays we're supposed to make.' The Dodgers have not officially named a starting pitcher for this rubber match. Regardless, their staff must again deal with Witt, who is batting .340 with six doubles in the past 12 games. He's also 15-for-45 (.333) with one home run and seven RBIs in 11 career games against Los Angeles. Meanwhile, the Dodgers' Max Muncy had two hits with an RBI on Saturday after hitting a two-run homer in the series opener. He's 9-for-20 with 16 RBIs in the last five games. --Field Level Media
