He was a staple piece of WWE for decades and has since continued to give back through his Six Feet Under podcast and ambassadorial role for the company.
In the weeks leading up to the WrestleMania 41 weekend in April, Calaway was quietly battling something far more real than the on-screen story-lines of the wrestling world.
According to his wife Michelle McCool, the warning signs began in March, when routine cardiac tests flagged something off with her husband's heart.
Follow-up checks revealed Taker had likely been in chronic atrial fibrillation (AFib) for an unknown length of time.

The 60-year-old had no noticeable symptoms beyond occasional breathlessness — something he'd chalked up to nothing serious.
He was eventually hospitalised for four nights with an ejection fraction (a measure of how much blood the heart pumps with each beat) of just 30 per cent — a dangerously low number for a man of his size and age.
And yet, even with his heart rate unstable, Taker insisted on going to WrestleMania two weeks later, to be there for McCool's Hall of Fame induction — and to induct her personally.
McCool, a two-time WWE Women's Champion, said on the Six Feet Under podcast: "You weren't supposed to go anywhere. You didn't want me to tell anybody.

'That's that old school mentality. I'm not mad at it — because I'd probably be the same patient — but it was terrifying.

Taker, whose older brother died from a heart attack in 2020, then begrudging admitted: "I wasn't supposed to go to Vegas."
McCool, who is Taker's third wife, added: "You didn't want me to tell anybody. I couldn't focus on anything else.
"All I wanted to focus on was you, your heart, getting the best cardiologists, a lot of phone calls, several nights in the hospital. And by the grace of God, you are here.
"But out of the words of the doctor himself 'it could have turned out badly if we had not found out that very day'."
Taker then coyly joked: "Yeah, well now I'm as strong as a Bull."
Before McCool, who is 15 years his junior, joked back: "And thankfully you can still pretend that you're a dead man. Because I saved your life."

'P***** off' Goldberg HITS OUT at WWE for ruining his last-ever match and retirement speech insisting they wouldn't have treated John Cena or The Undertaker that way

Former WWE world champion Bill Goldberg has hit out at his send-off from the sport after a disappointing retirement match last weekend. Goldberg, a five-time WWE champion, said he was 'p***** off' at the way his last bout with current champion Gunther was handled. The former wrestler and NFL footballer, who was also the WCW champion and has been inducted into the WWE hall of fame, complained about his post-fight speech being cut by the broadcaster. 'Let's just say I'm p***** off at the way I went out,' he said on The Ariel Helwani Show. 'I put so much into it and I don't feel as though the effort was reciprocated to put a stamp on what I accomplished. 'I'm not going to say I'm not ecstatic about the opportunity that I got, but I was a WCW guy. "Let's just say I'm pissed off at the way I went out. I put so much into it and I don't feel as though the effort was reciprocated to put a stamp on what I've accomplished. I think it could have been done a little bit differently. That's all. I'm happy with my performance. I'm… — Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) July 15, 2025 'I don't know, I think it could have been done a little bit differently, that's all. 'I'm happy with my performance, I'm happy with the setting but could it have been better? Absolutely, it can always be better.' As Goldberg took the microphone to confirm he had just completed his last fight, his speech was cut short by the broadcaster seemingly short on time. When pressed for more detail on what could have been done differently, Goldberg turned to the matter of his speech. 'There's about 100 things,' he said. 'I did three interviews beforehand... I did three. In six months. 'They cut me off 30 seconds into my speech bro, you don't do that. 'It's live television and you can plan for it. I know it is what it is. 'The match might have gone long, whatever it is, but I just think it could have been a little classier prepared than it was. 'I'll just say that's a mild understatement. Come on, man. 'They wouldn't do that to Taker right? They're not gonna do that to Cena, Cena's gone around the world doing his retirement thing. 'Mine was just a World Heavyweight Championship match.

Netflix show pulls in 6 million viewers to soar up charts in 43 countries

Netflix's leap into live events has added more firepower to an arsenal that already made the platform the most popular on-demand streaming service in the world. While stand-up comedy and reality shows have both been tested, it's real-time sports coverage that appears to be in Netflix's grand plans following the huge success of Christmas Day's live NFL streams and the acquisition of WWE broadcast rights (Picture: Getty Images) Perhaps its most anticipated live sport event so far was November's boxing clash between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson. Although many viewers were left furious over constant buffering and streaming issues, Netflix said the highly-anticipated bout pulled in viewers from 60 million households – and the platform has continued to muscle its way into the fight game as streamers threaten to replace more traditional pay-per-view coverage (Picture: Getty Images) The Tyson-Paul fight also provided the platform for a rematch between Ireland's Katie 'The Bray Bomber' Taylor and Puerto Rico's Amanda 'The Real Deal' Serrano, which Netflix says was 'the most-watched professional women's sports event in US history, with an estimated 74 million live viewers globally.' The streamer continued its success on Friday night as subscribers were given access to the trilogy fight for what's been described as 'the fiercest rivalry in women's boxing' (Picture: Getty Images) The weekend's coverage from the headline fight at Madison Square Garden in New York City pulled in more than six million viewers across the globe. Netflix announced that the main event drew an average-minute audience of 4.2 million viewers in the United States alone, hit the top of the most-watched charts in US, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, as well as making the top 10 in 43 countries overall (Picture: Getty Images) Netflix described the event as 'nothing short of epic' and a 'true global moment', announcing it had broken Guinness World Records, with 17 world titles on the line across five championship bouts adding to the scale of the spectacle. Taylor won on the night, as she had in their previous two meetings to make it a clean sweep in the trilogy (Picture: Getty Images) The event was shrewdly picked by Netflix, with fight experts predicting that it could provide the platform to launch women's boxing into a new era. Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn said after the fight: 'What they did tonight was give so many opportunities to so many great female fighters and big paydays and big opportunities. [Katie] won't ever say it but it's down to her. There's been many more before her but she's the one commercially who's broke down the barriers that have given so many opportunities' (Picture: Getty Images) The next boxing event on the calendar for Netflix will be the blockbuster bout between Mexico's Saúl 'Canelo' Álvarez and undefeated American star Terence 'Bud' Crawford. It will be shown on Saturday, September 13, live from Las Vegas. As part of its 'WWE Premium Live Events', Netflix will also be showing WWE Summer Slam live on August 2 and August 3 (Picture: Getty Images) Netflix's live coverage is set to extend far beyond sport, with NASA announcing at the end of June that it was set to team up with the streaming giant to host NASA+ live programming. It said: 'Audiences now will have another option to stream rocket launches, astronaut spacewalks, mission coverage, and breathtaking live views of Earth from the International Space Station' (Picture: Getty Images)

Major WWE star teased for TNA Slammiversary as 'nothing's off limits'

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Fans could see some big WWE and TNA Wrestling names crossing over with nothing 'off the table'. The two promotions announced an unprecedented partnership earlier this year, which has seen the likes of Joe Hendry appear at WrestleMania, while NXT superstar Trick Williams is the current TNA Wrestling World Champion. Days before Slammiversary on July 20, TNA president Carlos Silva exclusively told Metro that he believes anything is possible before sparking rumours AJ Styles could appear. He teased: 'When you can have Joe Henry run into WrestleMania with the TNA belt, you know that nothing's off limits. 'And you know that everyone at all the different levels are just thinking about, 'What can we do to create great fan experiences?' And, and I really think that's the thinking there. 'I don't think there's anything off the table… And, and it's nice to see, because so far it's been easy, and so far it's been great. So we're gonna keep it rolling together.' When Trick won the TNA World Title, WWE had Raw star and TNA legend AJ Styles narrate a video package on the history of the championship. Just days after our interview, he even referenced the Phenomenal One's nickname as he wrote on X: 'We're moving the stage back to accommodate more fans. This event will be TNA's greatest achievement and trust me it's going to be PHENOMENAL. #Slammiversary #TNA @ThisIsTNA' Fans are clamouring for Styles to return to his roots before his retires. Is Carlos looking at talks about using that calibre of WWE superstar? '100% It's all part of the partnership, and how wrestlers, you know, move up, down, sideways,' he admitted. 'We'll continue to do it.' Carlos took over TNA in December 2024, following over two decades working in combat sports and television. He was more of a 'casual wrestling fan' earlier in life, namedropping the 'Hulk Hogan and Andre The Giant era', and Goldberg, who officially retired over the weekend. 'I still came [into TNA] as a bit of an outsider,' he admitted. 'I didn't follow [wrestling] week in and week out, like so many others. But now that I'm inside of it, the feeling it's giving me is really incredible.' Carlos made some big changes, and was met with fierce backlash after firing TNA mainstay Gail Kim, who spent years championing the Knockouts Division. 'Every team, when a new coach or a new leader comes in, it's super hard,' he acknowledged. 'But if you want to get better, you've got to be willing to make some changes.' 'Winning here is letting more people see TNA, it's bringing in new sponsors. It's growing the brand,' he added. 'You have to continue to turn the dials to make some changes.' Carlos is in charge of overseeing TNA Wrestling as a brand, and he's backstage at every show, happy to step up in a more direct way. 'People might miss a show, they might have a family issue, or they might have a wedding they need to go to. We have a great team,' he explained when asked how hands-on he is creatively. 'If one person can't make it, you can always fill in. I love being at every show.' Although it's a tough schedule with frequent overnight flights, it's all worth it to see the fans' reactions. 'It makes everyone work harder and for me, it's just been great to be part of it,' he smiled. 'Hopefully I've helped to add a little bit to what was already a great team and a great foundation, and just helped get a little extra out of everybody.' A key aspect of Carlos' stint so far has been the blossoming arrangement with WWE. While the companies had already been working with each other to a certain degree, they announced an official partnership weeks into his tenure. Carlos has been inspired by the way the WWE has matched TNA's 'openness to try things'. 'I have to tell you, it's been such a great road, and very easy working through creative, operations, logistics [with them],' he said, while he outlined his approach as the smaller company. 'I don't know that you can really use the word assurances,' he pondered. 'When you approach partnerships like this, with the leader in the space… you want to partner with the leader, and make sure that it's a two way street in everything you do.' He has enjoyed an 'open' working arrangement, but insisted it's TNA's role to 'uphold' their end and make the most of the 'marketing and exposure' the WWE partnership gives them. That was most obvious at WrestleMania, when then-TNA Champion Joe Hendry was Randy Orton's surprise opponent. More Trending 'It was all very, very intricate,' he added. 'Everyone at WWE was so helpful to make it work perfectly. And so it all came off just right. Everyone hit their marks.' This weekend, TNA takes centre stage at Slammiversary, and Carlos has high hopes as he chases a new TV deal to take the company even further. 'Slammiversary is going to be another big inflection point for TNA,' he teased. 'It's going to be a great night. I mean, it's going to be our biggest night ever.'
