Jamal Musiala's Bayern Munich team-mate Alphonso Davies distraught as he reacts to forward's horror injury while streaming during Club World Cup match

Daily Mail2 days ago
Alphonso Davies was visibly distraught after watching his Bayern Munich team-mate Jamal Musiala suffer a grizzly leg injury last night.
Musiala had to be taken off on a stretcher just before half-time during his side's Club World Cup defeat by Paris Saint-Germain - and he was later transported to hospital.
The forward was involved in a sickening collision with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, having chased down a ball inside the box. Footage of the incident showed his ankle became trapped in between the stopper's body and arms.
The momentum carried them in opposite directions, but Musiala's ankle bore the brunt of the challenge, twisting at a sickening angle. According to Sky Germany, he has a fractured tibia and fibula and is expected to be out for four to five months.
Donnarumma and other players from both teams were visibly distressed by the injury and Davies, hosting a watchalong on streaming platform Twitch, was no different.
After the severity of the impact became apparent, Davies took off his headphones and fell to knees before screaming: 'Oh my God no, no! Please no, no.'

Bayern Munich forward Jamal Musiala suffered a horror ankle injury during the Club World Cup
Donnarumma was emotional after the incident, dropping to his knees and walking off the pitch at half-time with tears in his eyes. However, Bayern No 1 Manuel Neuer was not in a forgiving mood as he pointed the finger of blame at the Italian international.
He told Sky Germany: 'It was a situation where you don't have to go in like that. That's risk-taking. He was prepared to accept the risk of injuring his opponent.'
Neuer then alleged Donnarumma only checked in on Musiala because he was asked to, adding: 'I went to him and said, "Don't you want to go and see our player?" It's a matter of respect, of going there and wishing the guy all the best.
'He then did it. Fair play is always a part of it. I would have reacted differently.'
After the game, Donnarumma showed even more remorse, taking to Instagram to write: 'All my prayers and well wishes are with you @jamalmusiala10.'
Bayern boss Vincent Kompany said the injury left his blood boiling.
Delivering a concerning update, he said: 'It didn't look good, I don't know. If I'm just watching the images, it looks like an ankle injury of some type.
'But I'm not going to make a diagnosis here.'
Musiala covered his face with his shirt as he was wheeled toward the nearby ambulance
Kompany then added: 'It was tough. I've rarely been so angry at half-time, not against my players, but just because... there are many things in life that are important, much more important than this but in the end, for these guys, it's their life.
'Someone like Jamal lives for this, and he came back from his setback, and then it happens in the way it happens, and you feel powerless.
'But the idea for the group and for us is always to gain strength out of it, we were in the game, the team was doing well, the team was fighting. And the second half, I felt we were just starting to edge the game and it looked like it could happen any time.
'So you try and get strength out if it because you want to do it for Jamal but of course, when I'm sat here next to you now, the thing that gets my blood still boiling at the moment is not the result.
'I understand this is football, but it's the fact that it happened to someone that enjoys the game so much but also very important for us.'

Ben Sulayem says F1 could have V8 engines as soon as 2029

July 7 (Reuters) - Formula One could go back to using noisy V8 engines with fully sustainable fuel by 2029 at the earliest, according to FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The sport is entering a new engine era next season but the head of the governing body suggested last February that a return to the naturally-aspirated V8s or V10s was being considered after that. The V8 engines were last used in 2013, before the current 1.6-litre V6 units. "The current engine is so complicated, you have no idea, and it is costly," Ben Sulayem told reporters at the weekend's British Grand Prix. "R&D is reaching 200 million (dollars), and the engine is costing approximately 1.8 to 2.1, so if we go with a straight V8, let's see. "Many of the manufacturers produce V8s in their cars, so commercially it's correct. How much is it? You drop it. The target is more than 50% in everything." Ben Sulayem said the V8 engine would also have significant weight advantages and the sound would be welcomed by both nostalgic fans and the new generation. "To us, the V8 is happening. With the teams now, I'm very optimistic, happy about it. FOM (Formula One Management) are supportive, the teams are realising it is the right way," he said. "We need to do it soon... you need three years, so hopefully by 2029 we have something there, but the fuel is also very expensive, and we have to be very careful with that. Transmissions are very expensive." Ben Sulayem also spoke about the possibility of a Chinese team filling the final 12th slot, something he has mentioned before, and said he still felt the sport needed more cars rather than more races. "The time will come when we feel it is right to open an expression of interest," he said of filling the 12th slot. "We are not here to upset other teams. It won't be just go and do it for the sake of doing it. It has to be worth it for us. The team has to add value to sustaining the business of Formula One." General Motors' Cadillac brand is due to become the 11th team next season, a slot won after initial resistance from the other teams and Liberty Media-owned Formula One.

Ryder Cup hopefuls face 'two biggest weeks'

Europe's Ryder Cup hopefuls are entering "the two biggest weeks left before qualification ends" for the biennial match against the United States, says captain Luke week's Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club near Edinburgh is followed by the Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Donald, who led Europe to a 16½-11½ victory in Rome two years ago, is counting on his key players to step up this month."These are big weeks against the strongest fields so you want to see the top guys play well," Donald told BBC Scotland."There are some guys that have pretty much staked a claim for their place in the team but there are a few spots definitely open and these weeks are big for those guys."Rory McIlroy is the only player to have mathematically guaranteed his spot in the 12-strong team that will face the US at Bethpage Black in New York in pair Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrrell Hatton are in second and third on the list, external with qualifying ending after the British Masters on 24 August - the US qualifying period ends on 17 August after the PGA Tour's BMW top six make the team with Donald picking the six others, while the US team will be selected in a similar way by their skipper Keegan Robert MacIntyre is currently fourth on the European list and has really kicked on from making his Ryder Cup debut in 2023, where he was unbeaten, winning two-and-a-half points out of 28-year-old from Oban followed victory at last year's Canadian Open by winning the Scottish Open, which is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and PGA Tour."It helped him really grow as a golfer and gave him the belief that he could perform with the very best," said Donald of MacIntyre's Ryder Cup the Englishman added that he has been "very impressed" by the way MacIntyre has "adapted his game to the US".The world number 14 has made 15 cuts from his 17 PGA Tour events this season, including his runner-up finish at last month's US Open, where he finished one shot behind champion JJ Spaun at Oakmont."When you make that transition from playing mostly in Europe to playing over there, it is difficult," said Donald."The fields are deeper. It's harder. But he was still consistent and I was watching his stats quite a lot."Even from when he qualified in Rome to where he was before the second place in the US Open, his stats were quite a bit better."He won twice last year, in Canada and here [Scottish Open at Renaissance Club]. I saw the improvement in statistics and it was only a matter of time before he had a really, really good week and he almost pulled it off." 'McIlroy Masters win great for morale' Donald is the first European captain to lead two successive teams since Bernard Gallacher in the 1990s - defeats at Kiawah Island in 1991 and at the Belfry in 1993 were followed by victory at Oak Hill in New York state in leading the team to victory in Rome two years ago Donald says he now has an insight into what is required to win away from home - something Europe has not achieved since the 'Miracle of Medinah' 2012, while the US have not won on European soil since 1993."The guys wanted me to come back and to have another chance," said the 47-year-old Englishman. "Not many people have ever had that chance and certainly I understand that it's a great honour and a great privilege, but also a very tough challenge being in New York."It's hard to win away Ryder Cups but having the continuity of a repeat captain, a lot of the guys know me, know how I work."They already trust in my abilities to lead them and I'm happy, in general, with how things are shaping up. You're always continually trying to learn. "It needs a little bit of a different approach, especially with how to deal with the crowd."That's really my role - getting them into a good frame of mind and giving them the reasons why I think they can win."This season there have been five European winners of PGA Tour events, including McIlroy who joined the list of Grand Slam winners when he became Masters champion at Augusta in April."What Rory did at the Masters is great for our team, for our morale," added Donald. "He's always going to be an amazing leader inside the team room as a player."It's just so many consistent weeks where the top, top guys seem to be playing at a high level. You need that ultimately if you want to win. Without that, it's almost impossible."

Pedro details Maresca's message on his role at Chelsea after £50m transfer

Chelsea have spent big again this summer and Joao Pedro is set to be their next debutant after joining from Brighton in a £50million transfer and being thrust straight into their Club World Cup squad Joao Pedro revealed how he stepped off the beach in Rio to become a world champion. Incredibly, Brazil striker Pedro, 23, was sunning himself on holiday last week and is now set to play in the Club World Cup semi-final in New York. Pedro actually even revealed that he hired a personal trainer because he was aware of Chelsea 's interest and wanted to be in top physical condition so he could fly to the United States. ‌ Chelsea striker Pedro, who moved to Stamford Bridge in a £60m switch from Brighton, made his debut in the quarter-final win over Palmeiras just 48 hours after signing. And he is now ready to go after flying from holidays in Brazil to join up with Enzo Maresca's Chelsea squad in the United States. ‌ 'I was in Brazil on holiday with my friends, on the beach and Brazilian food is nice and spending time with my friends,' said Pedro. 'I was in Rio but I had a personal trainer and I trained as well so I was ready. "Imagine if I didn't train and Chelsea called me to come then it would be more difficult for me. I was on holiday with friends and family but I made sure I was ready. I knew Chelsea had an interest in me so that's why I was training harder and when they called me to come here I was ready, not 100 per cent but ready enough to come here and train. 'I made my debut and I think I showed I am ready and now I hope to play [against Fluminense]. It was a great experience so let's see. I always give 100 per cent and I think I took my opportunity and why I came here to play. If I'm going to start or not, it's not my decision but I will try to improve, be ready for Enzo and if he needs me.' ‌ Pedro actually started his career with Fluminense, then went to Watford before his £30m move to Brighton and now he is Chelsea's latest signing. It has been a sharp learning curve but Pedro insists that he is ready for the step up and challenge of playing in the Champions League next season. Chelsea now face Pedro's first club and Blues legend Thiago Silva who is 40 and still going strong for Fluminense. He said: 'When I left Watford I was in the Championship, then I went to Brighton, if you watch the group stage of the Europa League I was top scorer and I'm ready for a new challenge. That's why I joined Chelsea. 'Of course Fluminense will be special because I spent a lot of time and years there, I grew up there and it will be an unbelievable experience but now I play for Chelsea so I need to focus on my team and who plays better will win the game. Thiago Silva is a legend in my country, I have a lot of respect for him but now he plays for the other side!' ‌ Pedro knows he will have to battle it out with the likes of Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap for a regular starting place at Stamford Bridge. Delap is suspended for the Fluminense semi-final after getting two yellow cards in the tournament but the competition does not worry Pedro. And he says he offers something different. He added: 'Every team has a different style to play, Delap has a style, Jackson another and I have my way. But I think it's good for Chelsea. I would say I am a striker. I like to play as a number nine. But also I like to feel free on the pitch. And that's what Enzo said to me: 'Play like a number nine but come deeper to link up with the other players.' 'I am a very technical player. I like to score as well. I play like a nine, but I also have the mind of a ten as well. This combination will be good for my teammates and for Chelsea." 'I think who brings more good things to the team is going to play. Everyone will have to work hard and then Enzo will decide. He is a very good coach , very intelligent and he tries to make it easy for us. I feel very comfortable. The guys are very welcoming and helpful to me. I'm very grateful to be here, to be at Chelsea so, yeah, very happy.'
