But the landscape has changed dramatically over the last few days. The Geordies are facing an uphill battle to keep Isak - and Liverpool are lying in wait.
It's been reported by various reliable sources that Isak has effectively handed in a transfer request - and would like to explore a move to Liverpool.
Newcastle draw up list of Isak replacements
In any case, even if he were to stay, Newcastle couldn't afford his new contract demands. Isak wants £300k per week - a huge increase on his current pay packet of £120k.
It's looking inevitable that Liverpool are going to test the North East side with a British record bid - up to £130m - and then the focus for Eddie Howe will be on strengthening his frontline.
Liverpool have taken their preferred Isak replacement in Hugo Ekitike. Richard Hughes swooped in to complete an unfussy deal for a long-term target before Newcastle even knew what hit them.
There are increasing signs that the Toon are preparing to move on from Isak with a seven-strong shortlist of replacements being drawn up at St. James' Park.
Sesko leads the way for NUFC
That's according to a new report in TBR Football, which claims Newcastle have started the process of replacing Isak. One of the following players will likely succeed Isak - who will then be free to take up his position as Liverpool's new centre-forward.
Benjamin Sesko - the RB Leipzig striker who has been shopped around to all the top sides this summer without having yet secured a move away.
Lois Openda - his Leipzig club mate whose playing style has little in common with Isak but who could be available as the Red Bull club cut costs.
Yoan Wissa - a long-term Newcastle target currently starring for Brentford. The problem here is that Tottenham - under Thomas Frank - could yet pip Newcastle at the post.

Newcastle's move makes Isak's departure to Liverpool inevitable
Samu Aghehowa - the young Spaniard who has made rapid progress early in his career at FC Porto.
Ollie Watkins - Aston Villa's centre-forward was also reported to be on the list for Liverpool. Nicolas Jackson - a one-time Richard Hughes favourite who almost signed for the Scot at Bournemouth. It doesn't appear he's got a future at Chelsea.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin - a budget option given DCL is out of contract at Everton but he comes with big injury risks. Newcastle have been jolted into drawing up a shortlist on little notice given how quickly developments have taken place.
It's clear the club have been blindsided by Isak's demand to leave - emphasising that they were really not prepared for the momentum which is coming with this proposed transfer.
But now the planning phase is underway and the Magpies are clearly preparing for his departure so we could see Newcastle sanction a move for Isak very soon.

Star jets out as Liverpool's centre-back search steps up
Liverpool are on the hunt for a centre-back as their defensive situation is constantly changing. Despite agreeing a new contract in November 2024, we saw Jarell Quansah join Leverkusen this summer for a deal of around £35m. The young Englishman will now need to be replaced accordingly. Shop the LFC Store LFC x New Era Shop Now LFC Signed Merch Shop Now LFC x Titleist Shop Now Finding someone to play the third centre-back role behind Virgil Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate is easier said than done, even though the captain is only contracted until 2027 and the Frenchman is assessing his options while in the middle of contract talks with the club right now. It's plausible that Liverpool have a pathway available into the team to play a starting role, but if the fans' hopes and wishes are met, then any new signing might be resigned to the bench for the season. Liverpool's defensive problems evolve once more But the afternoon, we were given yet another reason to suggest that the Reds will be in the market for a centre-back and that is primarily off the back of Joe Gomez's inability to be regularly available. It's true that Liverpool have three players that can play the position of need, but in reality, we're actually talking about two, because sadly Gomez can't be relied upon across an entire season. Throughout his 10-year spell with us, we've seen a mixture of different campaigns. At times, he's played a full role in the team, breaching the 3000-minute mark, but at others, he's been absent. Last season was sadly an example of the latter, completing 886 minutes across all competitions and this afternoon, he was dismissed from Liverpool's preseason tour of Asia with an injury concern.

Chelsea Are Keeping A Keen Eye On This Manchester United Winger: Good Option For Maresca?
In a recent report, ESPN's James Olley claimed that Chelsea are keeping a keen eye on Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho. It has been revealed that the Blues are monitoring the situation of the Argentine attacker as they look to recruit him this summer. Garnacho's Impressive Form In English Football Garnacho had a decent campaign at Old Trafford recently but struggled to find consistency at times for Man United in the final third. The 21-year-old found the back of the net 11 times and earned ten assists in 58 matches for the Red Devils last season in multiple competitions. The Argentine talent was a real menace in the opponent's half as he averaged 3.44 shots per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He kept 34.5% of his attempts on target. Garnacho was tidy when interchanging possession with his teammates in the final third after completing 78.9% of his attempted passes in the English top flight (stats via Garnacho's current contract at the Mancunian club will run out in the summer of 2028. Therefore, it won't be easy for Chelsea to get a deal done for him this off-season. BILBAO, SPAIN – MAY 21: Alejandro Garnacho of Manchester United walks past the UEFA Europa League trophy after his team's defeat in the UEFA Europa League Final 2025 between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United at Estadio de San Mames on May 21, 2025 in Bilbao, Spain. (Photo by) Is Garnacho A Good Option For Chelsea Boss Enzo Maresca? Garnacho is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few dangerous runs with it in the final third. He can shoot the ball with venom from long range and has got the eye to play some killer passes in the opponent's half. The Argentina international is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also perform as a right-winger or as a centre-forward if required. He is already quite familiar with Premier League football and won't take any time to adjust to life at Chelsea. Garnacho would add more pace and goals to Enzo Maresca's frontline. He is good enough to serve as a useful rotational piece in the West London club's match-day squad. At 21, Garnacho has the potential to be a future star in the Premier League. Therefore, it makes sense for the Blues to get him on board this summer. He has what it takes to help Chelsea compete across all fronts over the next decade which makes him a decent option for the London giants to consider this off-season.

Fabrizio Romano confirms Alexander Isak wants DREAM Liverpool move
Liverpool could soon be welcoming Alexander Isak to the club. It's been an incredible summer in the transfer window for the Reds thus far. Richard Hughes has overseen an expert campaign - adding Florian Wirtz for a new British record fee and also bringing to the club Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili. LFC Kits Shop Now LFC x New Era Shop Now LFC Signed Merch Shop Now LFC x Titleist Shop Now Liverpool are not standing still despite winning the 2024/25 Premier League title under Arne Slot and their squad is now looking better than ever. But there is even MORE to come. Not only could the Anfield club be active in their pursuit of a new centre-back, Isak is now firmly in their sights. Liverpool prepare British-record deal for Isak It would require another British record sum but Liverpool have got the means to complete this deal. Isak sent shockwaves through the football world earlier this week when it was revealed that he had turned down Newcastle's approaches over a new contract and instead wished to leave the club as soon as possible. The Sweden international failed to report for preseason duty on the Asian tour - nursing a minor thigh injury instead. Liverpool quickly emerged as frontrunners for the 25-year-old - despite already signing Newcastle's preferred Isak replacement in Ekitike. Isak turns down MAMMOTH Saudi bid The Geordies' Saudi owners were left aghast, with it suggested that they were trying to persuade Isak to join another PIF club in Al-Hilal instead. There have been reports of a gigantic £600k per week salary - FIVE times his current pay packet and roughly double what he is demanding on his next contract. But Isak's intentions are clear. He is not interested in the gargantuan riches on offer in the Saudi Pro League - according to the latest report from Fabrizio Romano. Instead he wants to mix it up at the sharp end of the Premier League with the best team in the country. Isak wants Liverpool, not a cash-grab. Liverpool will be Isak's priority says Romano "Alexander Isak says no to Saudi and new contract, priority Liverpool!' Romano stated on Threads. 'Isak has already turned down proposals from Saudi as there's nothing at all ongoing with Al Hilal at this stage. 'Eddie Howe has also confirmed there are no contract talks ongoing, the player's wish is to leave Newcastle. 'Nothing at all with Chelsea, Man United, Arsenal. 'The real club in concrete talks for Isak was, is and still remains Liverpool… depends on Newcastle now.' © IMAGO - Alexander Isak Liverpool
