PETALING JAYA : A backbencher has urged the higher education ministry to review the security measures in place at student housing nationwide following the suspected murder of a private varsity student in Cyberjaya.
DAP's Dr Kelvin Yii said the incident, involving a student who hailed from Kuching, Sarawak, should serve as a wake-up call for higher education institutions and the authorities responsible for the welfare of students.
'I urge the ministry to review and strengthen existing safety protocols and work closely with all educational institutions to enhance the security measures at student accommodation nationwide.
'This tragedy raises serious concerns about student safety, especially of those who are living far away from home,' he said in a statement.
The Bandar Kuching MP noted unaddressed claims that the student housing in question lacked proper security systems and had dark walkways.
He said universities and those responsible for managing student accommodation must be proactive to ensure the safety of residents, including by making sure there are functioning CCTVs and emergency reporting systems.
'Prevention must take priority, necessary improvements must be made without waiting for another tragedy to occur,' he said.
The 20-year-old student was found dead in a condominium unit in Cyberjaya on Tuesday. Police said the unit, which she was sharing with five other students, was provided by her varsity.
Preliminary investigations found no sign that her residence was broken into, while there were no injuries consistent with rape. She died from blunt force trauma to the head.
Separately, the higher education ministry expressed its condolences to the family of the victim and urged the public against speculating on the case.
It reminded all varsities to ensure compliance with the SOPs pertaining to the security and welfare of students.
'The ministry is also committed to continuing to work with all stakeholders to ensure that every higher education institution remains a safe and conducive environment for students,' it said in a statement.

PETALING JAYA : Police have arrested a 36-year-old mother and her 61-year-old boyfriend after the former's teen daughter was allegedly raped by the man as the woman watched on. Siti Kamsiah Hassan of Bukit Aman's sex crimes investigation division, said the first incident of sexual assault against the victim allegedly took place in the middle of last year when the victim was sleeping in her mum's bedroom. Siti said the victim had woken up to someone touching her, when she realised her mother and her boyfriend were next to her. 'He then proceeded to rape the victim, witnessed by her mother,' she said, according to Harian Metro. More recently, the girl came across text messages last month of the two planning to engage in sexual activity, Siti said. The man allegedly expressed his intention to have sex with the girl at a hotel, causing her to fear for her safety. She fled to a friend's house before lodging a report at the Pandan Indah police station. This led to the arrest of the mum, who works as a security guard, and her self-employed boyfriend. The pair have been remanded for a week to assist with investigations.

Police to probe scuffle between cop, protester at anti-graft rally

A scuffle between a policeman and a protester, at an anti-corruption rally in central Kuala Lumpur today, shown in a video posted by X user @lancelot_se. PETALING JAYA : Police are investigating a scuffle which broke out between a cop on duty and a protester at an anti-corruption rally attended by about 100 people in Kuala Lumpur earlier today. Dang Wangi police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said one of the rally-goers had lit a flare at about 4.30pm, producing thick smoke which could have endangered participants, security personnel on duty and members of the public nearby. Because of this, policemen on duty took preventive action, he said. 'As this preventive action was being taken, a scuffle broke out between the rally-goer and a policeman, leaving the latter with minor injuries. The scuffle was broken up by other policemen. Three reports were later lodged over the incident,' he said in a statement. Sulizmie said the investigation was into the use of criminal force against a public servant, the letting off of fireworks, and insulting behaviour. Around 100 protesters gathered outside the Sogo shopping complex at about 2pm today before moving to Dataran Merdeka through Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. They urged Putrajaya to strengthen the legal system and reinforce the independence of anti-corruption institutions.
