Elden Ring Nightreign is adding two-player co-op next week

Engadget5 days ago
Elden Ring Nightreign is finally adding a two-player co-op mode on July 30. Prior to this, FromSoftware's spinoff could only be played solo or with three players. The so-called Duo Expeditions come as part of patch 1.02.
This is something fans have been asking for, as not everybody has two friends available at once to tackle a tough-as-nails 3D adventure. FromSoftware has released a trailer to accompany this news, so you can see the two-player co-op in action.
Beyond Duo Expeditions, the forthcoming patch will include "quality-of-life UI improvements" and options for filtering Relics. We don't know what the UI upgrades will look like, but July 30 is right around the corner.
This news comes just two months after the company tweaked the game to make the single-player experience a bit easier. It had been notoriously difficult, even for fans of FromSoftware. That update introduced an automatic revival mechanic and increased rune rewards for solo expeditions.
There's no doubt about it. Elden Ring Nightreign is a bona-fide hit. The company also recently shared that the game has reached five million players. The wider Elden Ring universe is slowly but surely becoming a cultural juggernaut. There's a movie in the works, to be directed by Alex Garland. That's the guy who made Annihilation , Ex Machina , Civil War and the underrated TV show Devs .

Nintendo announces new Direct presentation for Thursday

July 30 (UPI) -- Nintendo has announced a new Direct presentation that will showcase new games coming to the Switch and Switch 2 consoles. The Direct, labeled as a Partner Showcase, will live stream on Nintendo's official YouTube and Twitch channels Thursday starting at 9 a.m. EDT. The Partner Showcase title means Nintendo will be highlighting games from third-party publishing partners, as opposed to games made and published by Nintendo. The Direct will run about 25 minutes. Upcoming third-party games that could potentially make an appearance include titles such as the eagerly anticipated sequel Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hades 2, developer FromSoftware's The Duskbloods and a Switch 2 version of the highly-acclaimed Elden Ring titled Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition. Nintendo launched the Switch 2 console in June alongside Mario Kart World. Nintendo then released the critically-acclaimed Donkey Kong Bananza for the new console in July.

Elden Ring: Nightreign's Duo Mode Is Coming to Save You From Matchmaking Hell

Elden Ring: Nightreign, from developer FromSoftware, at first seemed like a gimmicky spinoff of its 2022 hit Elden Ring. Since then, it's proven to be a popular game that was the best-selling title in June, and in a few days, it's going to get one of its most requested features. In Nightreign, you can play solo or in a team of three. On July 30, the option for Duo Expeditions will be available, letting players take on runs with a friend. Players have been requesting a two-player mode since Nightreign came out. Modders even went so far as to release a mod to add the feature to the PC version of the game just days after it launched. Adding the Duo option means no longer needing to find a third player via matchmaking. As is the case with any online matchmaking, you never know if you'll get a competent player. There's also no voice chat in the game, so communication is limited to pinging locations on the map. Nightreign is set in the Elden Ring universe and has a shrinking storm circle mechanic, similar to Fortnite. This takes 15 minutes, so players have to act quickly in order to gain levels and obtain the weapons and items they need to defeat the first night's boss. If the boss is defeated, the storm circle resets and players have another 15 minutes to get even more powerful. If they survive the second night, they'll be transported to an area to take on the Nightlord, a powerful boss needed to complete the run successfully. Nightreign is a roguelike, so every run is different, with locations and night bosses changing. Because of that, it's easy to continue to play matches over and over again. Last month, FromSoftware released an option for harder Nightlords called Everdark Sovereigns. These are powered-up Nightlords that have more health and an additional phase in their fight, where the difficulty ramps up tremendously and makes for a battle meant for the most expert of players. Duo Expeditions for Nightreign will arrive via an update on July 30. Elden Ring: Nightreign is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series consoles for $40.

I was pumped to review Marshall's first Dolby Atmos soundbar, but I ended up disappointed

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. I can't tell you how excited I was to get the Marshall Heston 120 in for review. My very first guitar amp was a Marshall, and I've had an affinity for the British brand ever since. I no longer play guitar, but I am a home cinema addict, so Marshall's first Dolby Atmos soundbar caught my attention from the off. The brand has astutely leaned into its classic aesthetic flourishes with its headphones and wireless speakers, which look great, but applying them to a soundbar has resulted in a unique design that stands out superbly against the sea of aesthetically similar, all-too-subtle bars. The thick woven cover, brass accents and tactile knobs do a great job of tugging at the nostalgia glands, and the soundbar acts as a great conversation piece while not being so outlandish as to drag too much attention away from your TV. The listening experience didn't start badly, either. As you would very much hope of any soundbar, let alone one costing £900 / $1000 / AU$1799, the Heston 120 is a huge improvement on the sound of pretty much any TV. Weighty, smooth and fairly tonally balanced, it will be a huge upgrade if you're going straight from the lightweight, shrill speakers that are built into your TV. But as we watched Alex Garland's brilliant Civil War in Dolby Atmos, I felt curiously unenthused. Where was the punch to the gunfire, the guttural depth to the explosions and the ramping up of tension through the soundtrack? They were all missing. And as we switched between our favourite tried and tested Dolby Atmos scenes, these traits remained consistent. The Marshall just isn't very good at defining the leading edges of notes, so effects sound a little soft. And while there is a reasonable amount of bass, it doesn't reach deep enough to provoke a particularly emotional response. More of a problem, though, is the lack of dynamic expression – the difference between the quiet and loud bits. Turn the volume up on the Heston 120 and it's really quite loud, but its volume levels remain quite flat – so a steadily swelling score doesn't swell as it should, and an exploding Humvee doesn't audibly leap from the rest of the soundtrack as intended. There are other, smaller issues with the Heston 120 (some treble brightness and sibilance, for example, and a lack of projection to the Dolby Atmos presentation), but it's the way this lack of punch, bass depth and dynamics combines to rob a movie of much of its excitement that is most disappointing to me. Home cinema is all about excitement, so arguably the worst thing that any home cinema product can do is sound dull – and that, unfortunately, is the trap into which the Heston 120 has fallen. I really wanted to love Marshall's first Dolby Atmos soundbar, but alas, I have to continue recommending the far less novel, but much more accomplished, Sonos Arc Ultra instead.
