Lindsay Lohan shocks interviewers with the one reason she left Hollywood and moved to Dubai: ‘It's not legal'

West Australian4 days ago
Once a staple of Hollywood's limelight, Lindsay Lohan now leads a very different life on the other side of the world — and she has now revealed the reason behind the drastic change.
During an interview on Live with Kelly and Mark, Lohan was asked what it is like living in Dubai.
'It's just far away from Hollywood, and I live a very normal life,' she said.
She said that stricter privacy laws were the main factor drawing her to Dubai, where she enjoys a life far removed from the relentless attention she faced for most of her life.
'There's no worry of, like, I can't go eat at this place 'cause someone's gonna take a picture of my son,' she continued. 'And it's just, I feel very safe.'
Host Kelly Ripa was taken aback when Lohan detailed Dubai's strict photo laws. 'No, it's not legal,' Lohan said.
'You can't even take a picture of someone else if you're at a restaurant. You have to ask the person, which is a big difference from here.'
'What? That's incredible!' Ripa exclaimed.
Lohan stressed the importance of privacy. 'Yeah, privacy is key.'
The 39-year-old actress has been based in Dubai since 2014.
She married financier Bader Shammas in 2022, and the couple welcomed their son Luai in 2023.
Lohan has long struggled with the intense scrutiny of fame. In 2018, she told Paper magazine, 'I could do 99 things right and one thing wrong, but it's that one thing that will be focused on.'
'Behind the scenes, I do what I can to be the best version of me, which never gets mentioned,' she added. 'I am also human. I make mistakes. That's all that seems to get reported.'
Currently, Lohan is promoting Freakier Friday, the sequel to the 2003 hit Freaky Friday. She reunited with Jamie Lee Curtis for the film, out on August 8.
Lohan recently shared with
Page Six
a piece of advice she received from Curtis over 20 years ago.
'She said, 'How you show up on set is how the whole crew feels. You control the energy that goes on set, so always bring your best self,'' Lohan recalled.
'It's very full circle for me,' she said of returning for the sequel. 'And it was just a really exciting day when we were first there, all together.'

Lindsay Lohan's wildly expensive look as she arrives in Australia for Freakier Friday premiere

It's Sydney turn to get caught up in the hysteria of the Freaky Friday revival. Continuing the global press tour for the 2003 film's much-awaited sequel, Freakier Friday, Lindsay Lohan arrived at Sydney Airport ahead of Tuesday night's Australian premiere at Event Cinemas in Bondi Junction – and she was decked in top-to-toe designer gear. The Hollywood star was spotted touching down on Monday night with her entourage, including her husband, financier Bader Shammas, and their two-year-old son Luai. Lohan, 39, appeared in good spirits, smiling as she made her way through the terminal while wearing a Miu Miu denim jacket over her Miu Miu dress, believed to retail for $3,350 and $2,280, respectively. She topped it off with not one but two designer bags: one Miu Miu purse worth an estimated $3,540 and a Hermès Birkin Bag, which costs at least $20,000. Not even the gloomy weather could dampen Lohan's mood as airport staff tried to shield her from the rain with umbrellas as she exited the terminal in her Miu Miu flats, said to cost $1,570. Lohan's co-star in the original film and now the reboot, Jamie Lee Curtis, was also spotted arriving in Sydney earlier on Monday. The beloved star, 66, walked through the terminal while wearing a black face mask, but her designer bag and signature poise was a dead giveaway of her Hollywood status. The sequel comes 22 years after the original film, in which single mother Tess Coleman (Curtis) and her teenage daughter Anna (Lohan) constantly bickered until a fortune cookie mishap caused them to switch lives and see things from the other's perspective. Fans lapped up the film, which earned Disney a cool $US160.8 million worldwide, quintupling its $US30 million budget. And over the years viewers have been asking for more. Curtis recently revealed why there was such a long wait between films in a recent interview with BBC program The One Show, revealing an Aussie link to the sequel. 'The truth is that Lindsay had to be old enough to have a 15-year-old daughter, [but] people would ask me about the movie over and over again,' she shared. 'And finally someone in Australia said, 'Well, she is' and I was like, 'What do you mean?' because I know her as this young girl, so I don't know how old she is.' 'Someone told me [Lindsay's age] and I was, like, 'Oh! Well, maybe we can make the movie. Let's go!'' In the new film, Anna now has a daughter and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they all try to wrap their heads around merging the two families, lightening strikes twice and they soon find themselves in a four-way switch.

Billy Joel is 'shy' and 'deeply introverted'

Billy Joel is actually very "shy" and "deeply introverted", according to his daughter Alexa Ray Joel. The singer/songwriter has opened up about her famous father and insisted he's very different to his outgoing stage persona and "never buys [into] his own hype". Alexa told New York Post column PageSix: "You know my father is really funny because he's he's like the most self-effacing person on the planet right? "He never buys [into] his own hype. "I'm like: 'You should be so proud of yourself!' He's like: 'Eh.' He's just not a typical, like narcissistic guy in the spotlight - he just does not buy into any of it -he's a true artist. He so deeply introverted, he's really actually a shy person." Alexa went on to insist Billy is now "bored" of the hype around his new HBO documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes, which details his rise to fame and the highs and lows of his music career. She added: "He's like, well you know I'm kind of bored by it because it's a lot about me and I get sick of me ... "He's so introspective, you know, so I think it'll hit him later. I think maybe in a few months from now [he'll] watch it and be like: 'Oh that's cool'." The two-part documentary has won a slew of positive reviews since its release last month, and co-director Susan Lacy recently revealed she managed to get the famously private star to open up by explaining it wasn't a "drive-by portrait" project. She told The Hollywood Reporter: "He actually said to me: 'It's not my film, it's yours. The only thing I ask is tell the truth. Just tell the truth.' "And he came to the table with that, and I did about 10 very long interviews with him, and he delivered. "I don't know that he was actually really ready at the beginning to tell his story, but he came to realize that we were making a very deep film, a very serious film, the one that was really going to explore his music and how it connected with his life ... "It wasn't a fly-by-night, drive-by portrait, as many people do. He recognised that this was serious ... "

Lindsay Lohan has 'PTSD to the extreme' after early fame

Lindsay Lohan has "PTSD to the extreme" after being photographed constantly when she was younger. The Mean Girls star now lives in Dubai - where there are strict laws prohibiting photography without permission - and she's happy she's stay out of the spotlight with her son Luai, two, and her husband Bader Shammas. She told The Times newspaper: "I don't ever want my family to experience being chased by the paparazzi the way I was. "They were terrifying moments I had in my life - I have PTSD to the extreme from those things. The most invasive situations. Really scary. And I pray stuff like that never comes back. It's not safe. It's not fair." Lindsay posts pictures of family life on her social media pages, but she doesn't' show her son's face and she explained it's for his "protection". She told the publication: "It's something my husband and I discuss all the time. Do we want to show our son? We will know when the time might be right, but it's also a protection." The Hollywood star insisted she doesn't mind when fans ask her for selfies, but she feels uncomfortable when people film her on their phones when she's out in public. She added: "A lot of the time someone who is with me will notice someone filming [and I don't]. I think I've lived with it for so long it doesn't matter. "But then, now, somebody will have a phone up all the time. That's scary. That feels very uncomfortable. I'd rather someone just ask if they can take a photo or else you get cautious of every move you make." Lindsay has previously admitted leaving Los Angeles for Dubai has given her the chance to lead a more "normal" life. During an appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark, Lindsay explained: "It's just far away from Hollywood, and I live a very normal life. "There's no worry of like, I can't go eat at this place 'cause someone's gonna take a picture of my son. And it's just ... I feel very safe." Lindsay also insisted that her family can enjoy quality time together without being bothered. The actress - who married Bader back in 2022 - said: "You can't take a picture of someone else if you're in a restaurant. You have to ask the person, which is a big difference from here."
