Olympic Champion Shooter David Kostelecky Hails Shooting League of India: 'More About Teams Than Individuals'

News185 days ago
The two-time Olympic gold medallist turned 50 this year but remains as excited as ever to participate in this first-of-its-kind tournament.
Czech trap shooter David Kostelecky, at 50, is one of the oldest athletes to have expressed interest in the upcoming Shooting League of India.
The two-time Olympic gold medallist (gold in 2008 Beijing Olympics and silver in 2020 Tokyo Olympics), who began shooting at the age of 14, turned 50 this year but remains as excited as ever to participate in this first-of-its-kind tournament.
Kostelecky explained that his love for team events is the primary reason for his excitement about the league.
'I think it is more about the teams than about individual shooters. And I love it because this is what I am missing in our sport or my career," the Czech shooter said.
'I am excited to be a part of a team and try to win it together, because all my life I have competed for myself and for my country. I think our sport needs more team events. I also love to shoot the mixed events at the World Cups. Thus, for me, participating in this league is better than normal competition. So this was my motivation for sure," he added.
Having started shooting 36 years ago, David also spoke about how he has adjusted his fitness regimen over the years to ensure he remains fit enough to continue in the sport.
Kostelecky, who became the oldest Czech player to win an Olympic medal in 2020, said, 'I am happy to say that I think I have changed my fitness routine over the years. I have tried to be stronger also because I thought it was missing. I have seen the change it has brought to my sport."
'And obviously, when I was young, it was easy for me to stay fit normally, but now I am already aging, so I have to do more than before. So I try to control my food and do regular exercise, play some tennis and padel to stay fit."
He signed off by expressing his excitement to play alongside some of the best shooting talent in the world and said, 'I think it is really great for the community to have an event like this, because despite seeing somebody for 10, 15 years, you do not know him. But now, if you participate with him in the team, you can become real friends and buddies. So that is really great and I think this can put all the people together."

Asia Cup 2025: Hong Kong Name Kaushal Silva As Head Coach

Hong Kong's most recent appearance was at the Asia Pacific Cricket Champions Trophy in Singapore, where they finished runners-up. Kaushal Silva, a former Sri Lanka Test cricketer, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Hong Kong men's cricket team. His appointment comes at an opportune moment as Hong Kong prepare for the upcoming 2025 Asia Cup. They will kick off the tournament against Afghanistan on September 9, followed by group-stage matches against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Group B. Silva brings extensive experience to his new role. Between 2011 and 2018, he played 39 Tests for Sri Lanka, establishing himself as a dedicated wicketkeeper-opener. In his first-class career, he accumulated 13,932 runs in 209 matches, including 41 centuries, three of which were at the international level. Since his retirement in 2019, Silva has been coaching in Sri Lanka, England, and Australia. This marks his first appointment as the head coach of an international team. Burji Shroff, chairperson of Cricket Hong Kong, China, expressed confidence in Silva's appointment, saying that Kaushal's dedication to nurturing and developing talent aligns with their vision for the future of cricket in Hong Kong. They believe that under his leadership, the team can enhance its competitive standing and promote the sport within the community. Silva stated that his focus will be on instilling a strong work ethic and a winning mentality in the senior squad, as well as identifying and nurturing new talent for continued growth. Hong Kong's most recent appearance was at the Asia Pacific Cricket Champions Trophy in Singapore, where they finished as runners-up after losing to Malaysia in the final. With Silva now at the helm, the team aims to build on that performance and make a significant impact in the upcoming Asia Cup in the UAE. Shubman Gill Equals Gary Sobers Test Record, Needs 1 Run To...

Last Updated: Shubman Gill has proven his credentials in Test cricket with a memorable show on India's ongoing tour of England. India captain Shubman Gill is in the midst of a breakthrough series of his Test career that has seen him score truckload of runs. In his debut series as India Test captain, Gill has stepped up his game with four centuries from eight innings including a magnificent double ton against England. With a Test still remaining in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Gill can create several records. The 25-year-old on Sunday, scored a memorable hundred which was pivotal to India securing a hard-fought draw in Manchester after playing catchup for the majority of the match. He scored 103 off 238 and stitched a 188-run partnership with KL Rahul (90) to help the visitors recover from 0/2 after England had taken a huge 311-run lead. Gill thus drew level with the legendary Gary Sobers' 59-year-old record for the most runs scored by a visiting captain during a series in SENA countries. Sobers scored 722 from eight innings of five Tests during West Indies' 1966 tour of England. The legendary allrounder scored three centuries and two fifties on the tour. Gill has so far made 722 runs from eight innings of four Tests and needs 1 run to go past Sobers record. Most runs by a visiting captain in a series in SENA countries Overall, the record for the most runs in a single series by a captain is held by legendary Don Bradman of Australia who racked up 810 runs in 9 innings of a five-Test series against England at home in 1936-37. Gill is joint-third in this list. Gill's Sensational Show Prior to the start of England tour, there questions were raised over Gill's middling record in Test cricket. All five of his Test centuries before leaving for England came at home. The youngster has addressed the criticism with aplomb peeling four centuries with his overall Test average now in the early fourties. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
