CM Stalin urges Centre to act after attack on Tamil Nadu fishers

on May 2, chief minister M K Stalin has written to Union external affairs minister S Jaishankar, urging strong diplomatic intervention to prevent such incidents and to secure the release of impounded Indian fishing boats.
The fishermen, hailing from villages including Seruthur, Akkaraipettai, Arukatuthurai, and Vellapallam in Nagapattinam district, were attacked while fishing southeast of Kodiyakarai in five fibreglass reinforced plastic (FRP) motorised boats. Armed gangs reportedly from Sri Lanka assaulted the fishers and looted their nets, catch, boat engines, and other equipment.
In his letter, Stalin requested the Centre to engage with Sri Lankan authorities to stop such cross-border attacks and ensure the
safety of Indian fishermen
. He also objected to Sri Lanka's reported plan to dismantle and submerge 34 seized mechanised boats—confiscated in 2022 and 2023—as artificial reef ecosystems, calling it a threat to the livelihood of Tamil Nadu fishers.
The chief minister noted that as of May 5, Sri Lanka holds around 229 mechanised boats belonging to Tamil Nadu fishers. Although 12 have been cleared for release by Sri Lankan courts, they have yet to be repatriated. Stalin reiterated his earlier proposal to send 14 salvage boats and 101 fishermen to recover the vessels.

He urged the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to take up the matter urgently and ensure the return of all impounded boats.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan also expressed concern over the attacks and called for a constructive dialogue between the two countries. He emphasised the need to uphold the dignity, safety, and rights of Indian fishers while respecting maritime boundaries.

Amidst reports of targeting of migrant workers from West Bengal in BJP-ruled States, the West Bengal police have started a helpline number for workers to seek assistance. Responding to the development, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari shared his email-id and added that any citizen of the State who is 'harassed by Mamata's police' may reach out to him. The West Bengal police in a social media post stated that they are receiving 'reports from various sources that many people from Bengal, who have gone to work in other states, are facing various problems and instances of harassment'. 'If any citizen from Bengal working in another state faces any kind of trouble, we appeal to them or their family members to immediately inform their local police station. You may also contact the district control room,' the police said in the post. The West Bengal police in the social media post said that the helpline number is 9147727666 which will be available only on WhatsApp and the people can send a message there with the necessary information, including your name and address. 'Each piece of information will be verified, and we will coordinate with the concerned state authorities to take the necessary action,' the police said. According to West Bengal Chief Minister about 1000 migrants from the State were detained in other States. There have been reports of detention of migrant workers in BJP ruled states on allegations of being Bangladeshi nationals. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari called the post by West Bengal police politically motivated to mislead Bengalis residing in various parts of India for work, so that they become alarmed and confused. Ministers getting ‘picture perfect'for their show of strength in UP
Lucknow: Senior ministers from the state these days have developed a penchant for showing their strength through pictures and videos of events and meetings. Most of these visuals are leaked as they are not sent through official channels. Whether the event is political or apolitical, the message of the show of strength is loud and clear. The latest such show of strength came from the minister of jail, Dara Singh Chauhan. The occasion was his birthday celebration at Indira Gandhi Pratisthan on Friday. The event, named 'Sankalp Diwas', was largely attended by members of Dara Singh's caste members – Nonia Chauhans. However, the chief guests for the event were the two deputy CMs Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, along with BJP UP chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary. It was purely the choice of Chauhan as to who would attend the event, but there were discussions around who all were not invited. The trio came together at the event and urged those present to "repeat 2017 results in 2027 Assembly polls". This line that caught the attention of political observers was also part of the caption of the photographs shared after the meeting of Keshav Maurya with Union home minister Amit Shah on July 8. Maurya's meeting with Shah was followed by his meeting with defence minister Rajnath Singh on July 9 and UP governor Anandiben Patel on July 11. A few days back, even former MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh made a visit to 5 Kalidas Marg, the official residence of CM Yogi Adityanath. His meeting with the CM was held after a gap of 31 months, he claimed. The next day, Keshav Maurya hosted Brij Bhushan's son Prateek Bhushan at his official 7 Kalidas Marg residence. More than the pictures and videos, their timing has intrigued political pundits. Senior journalist Ratan Mani Lal said that such posturing has begun as it's well-known that there would be changes in the organisation and the ministries, both in the Centre and the state. "Since these leaders have smelled the forthcoming changes, they are leaving no stone unturned to present their case before the senior leaders and the community they represent," he said.
