‘Whole world shattered': Local mom speaks after son killed in OVI crash; former Buckeye charged

CLEVELAND (WJW) – Former Ohio State All American Kirk Barton is facing charges that he allegedly caused a deadly car crash while under the influence. The victim of the crash, 24-year-old Ethan Perry, has deep ties to the Greater Cleveland Area. His mother said she will not allow her son to become a forgotten footnote in the high-profile case. 'There will be a hole in my heart that will never close, it will never close,' Roslyn Perry told FOX 8. She said she was notified by police early Saturday morning that her son had been killed in a terrible accident in Dublin, Ohio, outside Columbus. 'At that point, my whole world shattered because my only baby was gone,' she said. Swimmer's body recovered from lake at Portage Lakes State Park: ODNR Investigators said Ethan Perry's car was slammed into by a speeding pickup truck driven by the 40-year-old Barton, who is a 2003 graduate of Massillon Perry High School and a four-year letterman for Ohio State between 2003 and 2007. Police said Barton admitted to officers that he had been drinking before the crash and he was arrested on a charge of aggravated vehicular homicide. On Monday, Barton pleaded not guilty to the charge in Franklin County Municipal Court. 'I saw his mugshot and all he had was a black eye. He had a black eye, but my baby was dead,' said Roslyn Perry. The death of Ethan Perry stunned his family in the Greater Cleveland Area, where he spent his formative years. The family is upset about coverage of the deadly accident that focused on Barton's football career at Ohio State nearly 20 years ago. 'You hear them say, 'Ethan West Perry died at the scene. Barton was a football standout at Ohio State.' Who cares? That is not relevant, he killed my child,' Roslyn Perry said. She said she finds it disturbing that Barton has a history of run-ins with the law, including prior OVI arrests and a high-profile episode that investigators said was fueled by alcohol. It was in June 2018 when Barton was arrested after he refused to comply with sheriff's deputies, who responded to complaints about his behavior at a suburban Columbus bar. He was shown on body camera video slamming the sliding door of a taxi van on the arm of one of the deputies. Barton was initially charged with felonious assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. Roslyn Perry questions how the 2018 case was disposed of without any severe consequences. 'I worked at Ohio State for almost five years, so I've seen it first-hand. It is privilege plain and simple,' she said. Witnesses describe apartment explosion that left 5 people in critical condition Ethan Perry's mother believes that privilege is continuing. Barton was released from jail after posting 10% of a $500,000 bond set by a judge on Monday. 'If this situation was turned around and Ethan killed this man, my son would still be sitting in jail today,' she said. As a condition of his bond, Barton is not allowed to drive and must wear an alcohol monitoring device. Meanwhile, funeral services for Ethan Perry will be held in Cleveland next week. Lorain man arrested, several injured after Elyria police chase ends in crash

ELYRIA, Ohio (WJW) – A Lorain man faces charges after investigators said he led a police chase through Lorain County on Thursday that ended in a crash with multiple injuries. Around 2:15 p.m., officers with the Elyria Police Department tried to pull over a black Jeep on Lake Avenue, near Rambler Avenue. Investigators said the driver, identified as 38-year-old Terrence Jackson, had multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest. According to Elyria police, Jackson initially pulled over before speeding off moments later, leading to a pursuit. 'The pursuit continued westward into Lorain County, eventually reaching the eastbound exit ramp to State Route 2, where Jackson entered the highway driving westbound in the eastbound lanes,' Elyria police said in a press release. 14-year-old killed in shooting inside car: Cleveland Police Officers lost sight of the vehicle, but according to investigators, the suspect crashed into another vehicle near the North Ridge Road overpass. Four other vehicles were also damaged in the crash, Elyria police said. Emergency crews quickly responded to the scene and three people were taken to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators said Jackson was thrown from the Jeep into the roadway. He was taken into custody and brought to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officers at the scene found and confiscated a handgun, which detectives linked to at least one recent drive-by shooting in the area. The Jeep was impounded. Home reportedly owned by Brad Pitt was ransacked by burglars: Police After being released from the hospital, Jackson was booked into the Lorain County jail. He's charged with failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer, having weapons while under disability, improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle and driving under suspension. Additional charges are expected. According to Elyria police, Jackson has a history of violent crimes, including two robbery convictions and multiple drug trafficking convictions. 'Our thoughts are with the motorists injured in this dangerous incident, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery,' Elyria Police Chief James Welsh said in a statement. 'The reckless actions of Mr. Jackson, a fleeing felon armed with a handgun and wanted in connection with multiple shootings, put countless innocent lives at risk and led to injuries among members of our community as well as Jackson himself. His blatant disregard for public safety is both unacceptable and deeply troubling. I commend our officers for their swift response and bringing this dangerous fugitive to justice.' How a Trump rally turned this former cop into a conservative Youtube star

Brandon Tatum's journey to become one of the most popular conservative influencers was a unique one that began at an Arizona Trump rally during the 2016 election. Known as "The Officer Tatum" on social media, Tatum has millions of followers and subscribers across all platforms where he shares his opinions and reactions to political issues, the media, and hot cultural issues. Tatum spoke with Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview about how he got there. Tatum's journey began as a college football player at the University of Arizona in Tuscon. However, he wasn't selected in the NFL draft, so he set his career sights elsewhere with his college degree, and explored various career opportunities in Tucson. As Tatum was searching, he needed to find something to be able to provide for his family. He applied to join the police department and got a response. Tatum did a ride-along with Officer Sean Payne, who inspired him to pursue a career in law enforcement. "He's since retired, but you know he changed my life… doing that ride along with him inspired me to be a police officer. And I always say this when I speak about it is for the first time in my life, I saw a hero in Sean Payne and I said, you know, I want to be a hero like him," Tatum said. Tatum said he wanted to serve his community and described his career as a police officer as "incredible." "I was a SWAT operator. I was a field training officer, which is, I trained new officers," he said. "I was crisis intervention trained, which means I negotiated and helped people in crisis, people who are trying to commit suicide, you name it." "I was there to help," he added. It was a full-circle moment for Tatum, who previously didn't have a good experience with the police growing up. "I didn't really like police officers from the community I grew up in," he said. "I actually got arrested when I was eight years old for smoking marijuana in a vacant house. So my first experiences with police officers were of me going to jail and not necessarily experiencing police officers that were in the community to help." And then, Tatum had a political awakening. "When I first saw those taxes come out of my paycheck, I realized that I needed to start voting and being politically active," Tatum said. He realized his views aligned more with the Republican Party. "Growing up being Black in America, by default, most of us are Democrat, so it really opened my eyes to saying, you know what, I think I align with the Republican Party more. I'm a conservative, I love God. I mean, all the things that I think most people would identify, associated with conservatism or Republicans," Tatum shared. The 2016 election changed Tatum's life in a big way. A video Tatum posted describing his experience at a Tucson Trump rally went viral overnight. He then made an appearance on "Fox & Friends" to describe posting the video and his support for the future president. "I think Donald Trump is a good candidate and I think that he has the tangibles, and he has the ability to make this country great again," Tatum told "Fox & Friends" in March 2016. Following that appearance, he realized the importance of making his voice heard. "I have a voice. I need to really speak out about these things that I see that are absolutely ridiculous," Tatum said. Since then, Tatum has been vocal online about various issues over the last decade, including Colin Kaepernick's NFL protests and the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots.
