WWE Raw takeaways: Roman Reigns returns; Naomi, IYO SKY, Rhea Ripley SummerSlam match set
WWE Monday Night Raw on July 14 took place at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Ala., and featured a No. 1 contender gauntlet match to face Gunther at SummerSlam.
The fallout from Evolution and Saturday Night's Main Event was a big focus of this week's show – and this episode was jam-packed with key moments. WWE Hall of Famer Nikki Bella faced Chelsea Green, Gunther gloated about retiring Goldberg, and AJ Styles may have landed an Intercontinental Championship match at SummerSlam against Dominik Mysterio.
Here's the top takeaways from a very strong episode of Raw:
Naomi takes a victory lap, gets SummerSlam triple threat
The new Women's World Champion Naomi kicked off the show to take a victory lap for her successful cash-in on IYO SKY at Evolution. The crowd attempted to chant "You deserve it," but Naomi didn't want to hear it.
She said they didn't "feel the glow" but they're definitely feeling her now as the new champion. Naomi sent a message to all of the "raggedy heifers" in the back to proceed with caution.
Enter Rhea Ripley.
Ripley said she had two goals going into Evolution: beating IYO SKY and getting her title back. But now that Naomi ruined those plans, she's been added to the list.
Enter IYO SKY.
The former champ told Ripley to get in line because her shot should be first. Naomi then said they both can get to the back of the line. The "back-ity, back, back of the line."
Enter Adam Pearce with a solution: all three will mix it up in a triple threat for the title at SummerSlam.
This was a fun first promo from Naomi as champion. She didn't bend to the crowd coming around to cheer for her. I'm not a fan of the triple threat announcement for SummerSlam, though. It feels like Naomi is being punished for successfully cashing in, but heel champs are going to find themselves in these predicaments.
Judgment Day retain women's tag titles
The first match of the night had some gold on the line: champs Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez faced The Kabuki Warriors (Asuka and Kairi San) for the women's tag titles.
This was a good back and forth match that was largely dominated by the champs early on. However, the challengers turned the tide and got themselves in position to win the titles with clever teamwork, beating down on Perez. Just when a double team move put Perez down for what would have been a three count, Dominik Mysterio jumped on the apron to distract the referee to prevent a count.
Rodriguez broke up the pin, and a moment later, Perez rolled up Asuka for the pin to escape with a title defense.
Mysterio getting involved in every Judgment Day match he's not officially in is getting a little tiresome. On the heels of Evolution, just let the women work. Sure, that's part of the numbers game and the advantage of being in a faction, but the interference took away from this one. At the end of the day, it was a championship match on weekly television, which is always welcome.
Paul Heyman on Seth Rollins' health
Seth Rollins legitimately hurt himself during a match against LA Knight at Saturday Night's Main Event, raising many questions about what will happen with the Money in the Bank briefcase and other booking plans.
Jackie Redmond caught up with Paul Heyman backstage to ask if there was a medical update on Rollins. Not only did Heyman dodge the question, but he said Rollins has until next June to cash in the MITB contract. Therefore, Rollins' health is "not a relevant subject."
Well, throw out all of the theories about the briefcase being put up for grabs again in a multi-way match. It appears WWE will put the MITB briefcase on ice until Rollins returns – which if done right, could be one of the best cash-ins ever. The right play would be to keep Rollins off programming until he shows up out of nowhere to cash in and steal a title. First and foremost is his recovery, which hopefully goes well.
Lyra Valkyria wins incredible 2-out-of-3 vs. Bayley
With a shot at Becky Lynch for the Women's Intercontinental Championship on the line at SummerSlam, Bayley and Lyra Valkyria clashed in a 2-out-of-3 Falls match.
The crowd was hot early for this one, filling the arena with dueling chants. Just as the action got intense, Bayley scored a quick roll-up pin to score the first fall.
Valkyria bounced back to put Bayley in trouble, but a hard Irish Whip reversal into the turnbuckle had Valkyria screaming in agony. Bayley seemed proud of her work, but didn't go for the pin. As Bayley continued to go to work, a pin attempt was reversed, and Valkyria evened the score with a three-count.
From that point, the action only got more intense as the race for the final pin was on. The final sequence was amazing: Bayley dropped an elbow to the back of Valkyria, straight into a crossface after the pin failed. Bayley then attempted to kick off the ropes to give herself more room, but Valkyria reversed it and lifted her up for a Nightwing to get the pin.
Women's wrestling has owned the past 72 hours. This was a fantastic match that didn't miss a beat. The only thing that could have made this better is if it was for the title itself instead of No. 1 contender status. Bravo, Bayley and Valkyria.
CM Punk wins gauntlet match, Roman Reigns returns
The main event of this week's show was a No. 1 contender gauntlet match, with the winner earning the right to face Gunther at SummerSlam for the World Heavyweight title. Bron Breakker started things off, as Gunther overlooked the action from a box seat.
Breakker's first opponent was Penta. Zero fear was shown, but Penta was eliminated after Breakker hit a spear as a counter to a springboard maneuver.
Up next was LA Knight. Another valiant effort was given, but another spear connecting sent Breakker to the next opponent.
Enter Jey Uso, who came in on fire. After sending Breakker to the outside, Uso called for an encore to his entrance theme, and yeeted into a commercial break. Uso overcame a momentum shift, just to get screwed over by interference from Bronson Reed. Another spear, another pin for Breakker.
Enter CM Punk. Once again, another opponent came in like a house on fire. After some back and forth, Punk caught Breakker in a submission hold, which prompted Reed to come into the ring and drop an elbow. Uso returned, hearing his music for a third time during this gauntlet. With the odds evened, Punk caught Breakker with a GTS to win and advance to SummerSlam to face Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship.
After the match, Breakker and Reed put a post-match hurtin' on Punk and Uso.
As Reed was going up for a Tsunami, Roman Reigns' music filled the speakers to a ridiculous pop from the crowd. The OTC cleared the ring with multiple Superman punches and a spear. Reigns helped Uso to his feet, but didn't extend that courtesy to Punk. All the while, the crowd was chanting at the top of their lungs.
What a way to close an incredible episode of Raw.
Reigns is back just in time for the build to SummerSlam. Seeing him and Uso on agreeable terms is nice, but where will he fit into the second biggest show of the year? Surely plans have changed drastically after Rollins' unfortunate real injury, so it will be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks.

Cardi B & Stefon Diggs Quell Breakup Rumors With Flirty Instagram Exchange: ‘Sniffs BBL'
Cardi B and Stefon Diggs are still going strong. After being hit with rumors of a possible split, the rapper and NFL star put those claims to rest with a raunchy exchange on Instagram over the weekend. Ahead of her gig hosting WWE's SummerSlam, Cardi posted a photo to IG on Aug. 1 showing off her new Liem Homme outfit. More from Billboard A Timeline of Cardi B & Stefon Diggs' Relationship Cardi B Kicks Off Night One of WWE SummerSlam 2025: 'We're Making History Tonight' Cardi B Tells Gossips to 'Get Off the Internet' Amid Stefon Diggs Breakup Rumors: 'Ignore the Bored' Diggs hopped into the comments section with a series of tongue emojis. '* snifffs BBL,' he wrote. The comment went viral on social media, compiling more than 31,000 likes as of press time. Cardi flirted back at her man: '@stefondiggs that's how I got you stuck.' The exchange played into a false rumor that had previously picked up steam on social media, which allegedly found Diggs saying that Cardi's BBL 'smelled bad.' That doesn't seem to be the case, as the couple had some fun with the misleading claims. According to Complex, the Grammy-winning rapper addressed the bogus claims in an X Spaces. 'First of all, I don't know who made that up. But b—h, that's you,' she said. 'That's on you, b—h. That could never be me… B—h, I was a f—king stripper, you had to smell good all the time … I was raised by women.' Cardi B was unbothered and in her glory while hosting WWE's SummerSlam at MetLife Stadium on Saturday night (Aug. 2). The Bronx native stepped to the ring with a hard-hitting theme song that could land on her Am I the Drama? sophomore album, which is slated to arrive on Sept. 19. Diggs and Cardi B have been dating since the early part of 2025. They confirmed their relationship when appearing courtside at a New York Knicks game in May. R&B/Hip-Hop Fresh Picks of the Week: Kehlani, Tiwa Savage, Skrilla, BabyTron, Tiara Thomas & More
August has arrived, and with it comes the first whispers of autumn. There's still a bit more summertime left in the tank, however, as several of hip-hop's biggest stars reminded us over the past week. More from Billboard Cardi B & Stefon Diggs Quell Breakup Rumors With Flirty Instagram Exchange: 'Sniffs BBL' Shaboozey, Fireboy DML & More to Headline EMPIRE's 15th Anniversary Show Drake, Quavo Praise Iconic Strip Club in 'Magic City' Docuseries Trailer: 'One of the Wonders of the World' Last Friday (Aug. 1), superstar producer Metro Boomin unveiled a lush tribute to Atlanta's futuristic era with his A Futuristic Summa mixtape, featuring collaborations with both titans of that era (J Money, Roscoe Dash, Young Dro, etc.) and new-gen talent (BunnaB, Breskii, YK Niece, etc.). Crafted with the same intentions Tyler, the Creator funnelled into Don't Tap the Glass, Metro's new DJ Spinz-hosted project aims to keep the dancefloor full and active for the party, afterparty, and even the afters. The next day (Aug. 2), Cardi B kicked off night one of WWE SummerSlam 2025 with a preview of a new song — one that many presumed was a taste of her long-awaited forthcoming sophomore LP, Am I the Drama? Due Sept. 19, Cardi's new album is a little over a month away, and surprises like her SummerSlam appearance are keeping the rollout at the top of everyone's timelines. Spike Lee, Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky carried that late summer energy into Monday (Aug. 4) with the debut of the trailer for their forthcoming Highest 2 Lowest film. 'Don't sleep on A$AP. In this film, Denzel and A$AP go toe-to-toe,' Spike teased during a Tonight Show interview last week (July 31). 'What's interesting is, even before I got involved with this film, I always thought that A$AP looked like he could be Denzel's son. There's a big resemblance. So when you see it on the screen, it adds an element of father and son.' With Fresh Picks, Billboard aims to highlight some of the best and most interesting new sounds across R&B and hip-hop — from Knowledge the Pirate and Roc Marciano's new link-up to Kehlani's kaleidoscopic reimagining of her latest hit. Be sure to check out this week's Fresh Picks in our Spotify playlist below. Freshest Find: Kehlani, '(Un)Folded' Since its June 11 debut, Kehlani's 'Folded' has quickly resonated with R&B listeners thanks to the Grammy-nominated Oakland singer's gorgeous vocal performance and the '90s-evoking feel of its production. A few weeks later, Kehlani dropped '(Un)Folded,' a mostly a cappella rework of the song that doubles down on their countless layers of Brandy-esque stacked vocals. Throughout the track, Kehlani adds different vocal inflections and stresses different syllables to conjure a more forlorn vocal performance than the original, underscoring how innately soul-baring a cappella arrangements can feel. As 'Folded' continues to grow, '(Un)Folded' offers a tender alternative to the infectious original. — KYLE DENIS ABIR, 'Nothing New' Ahead of ABIR's sophomore album THE GAME, the Moroccan-American singer returned with her cathartic 'Nothing New' single. ABIR delves into how she finds comfort in chaos. While those around her pick at the red flags of her partner, she prefers to power through and see the good in the relationship. 'I don't want nothing new,' ABIR repeats on the stirring track. 'With God as my witness, I'm choosing the chaos.' She's not blaming anyone, but sometimes it's just easier to keep the status quo. — MICHAEL SAPONARA Skrilla, 'Die 4 Me' There's nothing quite like spooky rap music. Skrilla's cultivating his own sound, and is always good for some funny lines like saying 'Free Willy' after a bar about a dolphin. He raps like a GTA character (complimentary), and he's wearing a mask like one in the video. I also like how he mixes Islam with the Yorùbá religion when he mentions speaking with the deity Elegua, which made my ears perk up because I'm Puerto Rican. It's all very interesting. — ANGEL DIAZ Tiwa Savage & Skepta, 'On the Low' On their new single, Tiwa Savage and Skepta explore a secret romance that's intense, emotional, and hard to keep under wraps. Skepta opens the song by suggesting a getaway, showing he wants to treat her and escape the chaos of everyday life. Tiwa, meanwhile, sings about the thrill and frustration of their hidden connection, how they meet in secret, act like there's nothing between them in public, but both know there's something real going on. The chorus emphasizes how they keep pretending it's casual, even though their actions say otherwise. At its core, the song explores the tension between passion and secrecy, and the denial that often comes with situationships. — CHRISTOPHER CLAXTON Tiara Thomas, 'Kiss Me' For her first single of the year, Grammy and Oscar-winning singer-songwriter Tiara Thomas delved into the sultry world of lip unions. 'Kiss me/ Your lips get me so excited/ Like you miss me/ Taste so good I might bite it/ Pull me in close like ain't no time to lose,' she coos over earthy bass guitar and crisp percussion, courtesy of New Jersey-bred producer Dilemma. Short, sweet and seductive, 'Kiss Me' is the perfect introduction to Thomas' new era. — K.D. BabyTron & Rio Da Yung OG, 'Ex 2 (BM)' BabyTron and Rio Da Yung OG joined forces to cook up the ultimate crashout anthem. The Detroit rapper angrily raps a diary entry of all the misfortunes he hopes his babymother runs into, ranging from diabolically having 'fentanyl in her Starbucks' to taking a 'bleach bath with a box full of jellyfish.' 'Ex 2 (BM)' landed on BabyTron's new Luka Troncic 2 project — an homage to Lakers star Luka Doncic — as the 25-year-old shows you can't keep him on the bench for long. — M.S. Knowledge the Pirate feat. Roc Marciano, 'The Outfit' Knowledge's latest album, The Round Table, dropped in May, and it's fully produced by Roc Marciano, so it makes sense that Marci would make an appearance. Here they are walking around Little Italy spittin' mafioso raps, which has become somewhat of a lost art these days. If you're a fan of Roc, you've heard Knowledge plenty, and I'm diggin' the theme of this project because he always came across as Roc's consigliere to me; the Tom Hagen to his Michael Corleone. — A.D. Lihtz, Fridayy & Meek Mill, 'Crash Out RMX' This new joint from Lihtz, Fridayy, and Meek Mill finds the trio perusing the highs and lows of a toxic relationship. Each artist takes turns reflecting on love that's passionate but unstable, marked by betrayal, miscommunication, and moments of intense intimacy. The lyrics blend vulnerability with aggression, showing how love can feel like war one moment and a deep connection the next. From letting go to holding on too tight, the song paints a vivid picture of heartbreak, ego and longing. — C.C. Kyle Bethel feat. 40 Cal, 'Decent Man Walking (40 Kyle Mix)' If you haven't sung 'decent man walking here' to yourself over the last month or so, are you even alive? Shouts to Kyle Bethel for making some wholesome raps while resembling Russell Wilson and Kanye West at the same time, and shout out to 40 Cal for showing love while delivering a great verse. If you've ever heard a 40 Cal song, you'd think that this link-up was unexpected, but in fact, it was in play all along. He's the reason why some people smoke a carton a day. When you hear that four oh act like you know. But for real, the beat is pretty good and it's catchy as f—ck. New York rappers should put a verse on this like they did on that Cash Cobain and Laila! track. Let's end the summer on a good foot, New York! *Funk Flex voice* — A.D. WWE Raw results, highlights (Aug. 4): Seth Rollins stands tall over CM Punk, LA Knight, Roman Reigns
In the wake of one of the biggest WWE weekends of the year, "WWE Raw" stayed in the tri-state area on Monday night, emanating from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Seth Rollins gives an explanation and gets a title defense Regardless of how you felt about the overall SummerSlam weekend, it's impossible to deny that one of — if not the — high points of the two-night event was Seth Rollins' "Ruse of the Century." Here are two other near-undeniable takeaways: 1. Rollins and WWE worked nearly all of us brilliantly. It was a masterclass in protecting kayfabe at every level imaginable and will go down as one of the greatest Money in the Bank cash-ins of all time. He described how he pulled it all off during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show earlier Monday. 2. Rollins' dedication to this angle and his year as a whole further proves that we are watching a truly generational talent. He belongs every bit in the conversation alongside Roman Reigns, John Cena and Cody Rhodes as the best WWE superstar of the past decade. Now that that's out of the way, Rollins cut a relatively generic promo to open Monday's show, but that didn't matter much because he remains incredibly over with the crowd. The big surprise came in the form of an LA Knight appearance. Knight was Rollins' opponent when the the whole fake injury angle started, and he was justifiably irked at the whole situation, challenging Rollins to a World Heavyweight Championship match that was made official by Adam Pearce. Pearce also seemingly evened the playing field by banning Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed from ringside. All of this led to the main event and our... 👑 Uncrowned Gem of the Night 👑 Even with Breakker and Reed banned from ringside, there was no shot this match was going to end clean — and surprise, surprise, it didn't. For those of you who read our own Drake Riggs' recaps week-in and week-out, you know he's not a fan of booking every match to DQ, but it had to be done here and it all worked well. After a very strong main event between Rollins and Knight, we got interference from CM Punk, who Rollins screwed two nights prior at SummerSlam. Punk's attack resulted in Knight being disqualified and making him understandably angry as well. All of this turned into chaos as Breakker and Reed rushed to help Rollins lay waste to his foes. The Vision (I think this is the new stable name for the crew, established earlier in the show) stood tall and the credits began to roll. *Billy Mays voice* But wait, there's more! As Rollins, Heyman, Breakker and Reed stood on the ramp, Roman Reigns' music hit and the OTC attacked, leading to a staredown with Rollins before he was ultimate overwhelmed by The Vision. Rollins stomped Reigns, Breakker speared him and Reed delivered a handful of tsunamis to close the show. Moving forward we now have Reigns, Knight and Punk all with legitimate beefs with Rollins directly and it's likely we'll get Reigns written off television for a little while and a World Heavyweight Championship triple threat between Rollins, Punk and Knight. Ultimately, I think this is our path to the men's War Games match in November. 🔥 Burn of the night 🔥 We're getting Becky Lynch vs. Nikki Bella for the Women's Intercontinental Championship at some point in the future. Bella got a decent pop and had a few moments in her promo, but it paled in comparison to Lynch eviscerating her on the mic (which ALMOST was our Gem of the Night). Now, if you've watched "WWE: Unreal," you know that bringing personal relationships into promos without previously clearing it can cause some issues — a la Flair and Tiffany Stratton in the WrestleMania 41 build. Considering Lynch and Bella have been in the company together for a decade, I'd be stunned if this promo wasn't discussed and planned together beforehand. It doesn't change how amazing it was. Lynch will face Maxxine Dupri next week before presumably a showdown with Natalya and then Bella. Champions of Convenience I called Flair and Alexa Bliss that during Uncrowned's live coverage of SummerSlam Night 1 and I'll be damned if the name isn't going to stick — at least in this space. Anyway, how good are Flair and Bliss together? Flair got a "you deserve it" chant from the Brooklyn crowd — something that would have been unheard of before this run. The chemistry is there, the promo work was golden, and we even got hints of the duo jelling together in the ring when they pulled off a tandem Natural Selection in a title rematch against Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez. The match was just as good as their SummerSlam bout and should be the start of a prolonged run for these two. Let's make Rh-Iyo a thing Immediately after Flair and Bliss retained, we got a backstage segment featuring the Kabuki Warriors, plus Iyo Sky and Rhea Ripley. Asuka and Kairi Sane — former women's tag champs themselves — left the two longtime rivals to talk, teasing a possible tag team forming. Ripley revealed Sky asked for and was granted a title match against Naomi and that she'd be rooting for her. The big issue here — Naomi is already slated to put her Women's World Championship on the line against Stephanie Vaquer at Clash in Paris later this month. Here's hoping Naomi-Sky next week serves as vehicle to get Ripley and Sky to team together and build some more momentum in the women's tag division. Big G joining the New Day? Before John Cena's polarizing heel turn, we had The New Day pull off one of the biggest character changes in recent history. Like Cena, the New Day's run hasn't quite hit the heights of the initial shock, but there's hope — in the form of Grayson Waller. Waller — who is going by Big G — went through a breakup of his own recently and is looking for a new crew to run with. Enter Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods, who are still "mourning" the loss of their World Tag Team Championship. Waller put on a really strong match against Penta, and despite losing with Kingston and Woods watching ringside, I can't help but feel that I care a whole lot more about Big G and the New Day linked than separate. Monday Night Meh 1. We got Sheamus versus Rusev again, which was fine, but it's about time for us to put this rivalry to bed one way or the other. The biggest reaction from the crowd came after both men were counted out and a ringside brawl broke out. Give us Sheamus vs. Rusev No DQ in a "WWE Raw" main event and have them either team up or move on after that. 2. Rusev and Sheamus' fighting continued throughout the night, including during a backstage interview segment with Sami Zayn. Zayn said Karrion Kross is in his rear-view (thankfully) and his sights were set on becoming a world champion. He's at best fourth or fifth in line to challenge and just got interrupted by a brawl in a relatively throwaway feud. There's a lot of work to do, a match against Rusev next week doesn't get him any closer. 3. Dominik Mysterio's match against Dragon Lee was very good, but the ending got a little out of hand. Mysterio's boot slipped off in a callback to 24 hours earlier in his match against A.J. Styles at SummerSlam, El Grande Americano along with two other imposters interfered and Mysterio grabbed the bottom rope to beat Lee. That's a lot to keep track of and it overshadowed the in-ring work. 🤔 Monday musings 🤔 1. Becky Lynch's new music and tron are awesome. We're so far away from the "Celtic Invasion" version of Lynch that this is a much better presentation for "The Man." 2. Michael Cole announced that Gunther suffered an orbital bone injury in his match at SummerSlam against CM Punk. Work or not, this is a good thing for "The Ring General," who desperately needs a reset after a topsy-turvy 2025. 3. Adam Pearce does a really great job in the on-screen GM role. He got some of the biggest pops on Monday night. 4. Whoever is running WWE's social media account must be a Tekken fan. I personally would have went the Mortal Kombat route and made a Kung Lao joke, but we're simpatico. 5. The Reed shoe thing is weird now. It was cool when he did it the first time and it inspired two awesome puns (Tribal Thief and Shoe-la Fala), but the loss to Reigns and Uso at SummerSlam takes away from it for me. 👑 A really strong showing for the "Raw after SummerSlam." I give this show a Crown score of: 9/10. 👑
