Mohali police nabs ‘most wanted' fugitive after 8-round gun battle

Indian Express16-06-2025
A hot pursuit on Lakhnour Road erupted into gunfire Sunday night when CIA Kharar officers cornered Sandeep Kumar, the fugitive named in seven serious cases, including the 26 May Phase-1 murder (FIR 155/2025).
SSP Harmandeep Hans said the encounter began around 8 pm, directly opposite the Mohali SSP headquarters. 'Kumar fired four shots at our team and drove into the roadside thicket. We returned fire eight rounds in total and hit him in the leg. No police personnel were injured.'
SSP Hans said, 'Police believe Kumar had come to supply narcotics.' A .32-bore pistol and live cartridges were recovered; the .315-bore weapon used in May's homicide is still missing. Paramedics moved Kumar to Mohali Civil Hospital, where he remains under guard.
Hans added that Kumar already faces charges of murder, rape, POCSO offences, kidnapping, arms violations and drug trafficking. His alleged getaway rider in May's killing, Bablu, was captured in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, earlier this week. Because Kumar opened fire on officers, a fresh FIR at Sohana Police Station now lists Sections 109, 132, 221 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita alongside the Arms Act.
'Given the gravity of the case, special teams were formed under SP Investigations and SP Operations,' Hans said. 'We tracked Kumar's movements for days and finally pinned him down. The hunt for his associates and additional weapons continues.' Investigators describe Kumar as a habitual offender previously arrested in Phase-1 and Balongi (Punjab) and Swarghat (Himachal Pradesh) on counts ranging from theft and kidnapping to drug smuggling.
SSP Harmandeep Hans said Saturday's operation struck 'a major blow to organised crime in the region'.

Man shot while playing PUBG, friends try to mislead police

A 20-year-old man was accidentally shot in the leg while playing the popular mobile game PUBG with a group of friends, police said. The incident was reported on Monday at approximately 1:20 a.m. in the Uttam Nagar area. (REPRESENTATIVE PIC) The group initially misled police by falsely implicating another minor in the case. The incident was reported on Monday at approximately 1:20 a.m. in the Uttam Nagar area. The accused have been identified as Jafar Sadik Ali Sheikh, 20, Parshwanath Shirish Chakote, 25, Vaibahv Laxman Dhawade, 22 and Sagar Kothari, 22. The injured individual has been identified as Sanket Sanjay Mohite, 22 years old. According to police, the injured person, along with his accused friends, was playing PUBG at Sheikh's residence. During the game session, Kothari took out a pistol in his possession and began showing it to others. While loading and unloading it, the pistol jammed. Chakote then took the weapon to handle it himself, during which the gun accidentally discharged, hitting Mohite in the leg. Immediately, the victim was shifted to the nearby private hospital. Hospital authorities later informed the police about the medico-legal case. Police sub-inspector Atul Kshirsagar and his team rushed to the hospital and questioned the victim. Mohite initially claimed that a minor, who is their friend, had accidentally fired a shot from a pistol. Mohan Khandare, senior police inspector at Uttamnagar police station, said, 'When we questioned the juvenile, it was found that he had no connection to the shooting, and he was not present in the house when the incident took place. During further interrogation, Mohite revealed the true story.' A suo motu case has now been registered against the group by the police for misleading the investigation and concealing facts. Police also invoked relevant sections of the Arms Act for possession of country-made pistols.

Police bust illegal gun factory set up ‘to avenge gangster Chandan Mishra's hospital murder'

Police in Bihar's Buxar said they have busted an illegal arms manufacturing unit allegedly set up to avenge the murder of gangster Chandan Mishra, who was shot dead in Patna's Paras Hospital on July 17. Superintendent of Police (SP) Shubham Arya said the operation was carried out based on specific intelligence received on Saturday regarding the alleged manufacturing of illegal arms at one Dinesh Yadav's residence in Dalsagar village. 'We had received credible inputs about a mini gun factory operating from a private residence. Preliminary information had also indicated the presence of partially built weapons on the premises,' said Arya. He said the accused had brought in specialised workers from Munger, known for its history of illegal arms making, to assist in the manufacturing process. A special investigation team (SIT) was constituted under the leadership of Gaurav Pandey, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Sadar Buxar. The SIT then conducted a raid at the premises. The operation resulted in the arrest of six individuals and the seizure of three country-made pistols, a hand grenade, 18 live cartridges, two magazines, four motorcycles and six mobile phones. In addition, a large cache of arms manufacturing tools and materials was seized, including a saw, two circular flat discs, two packets of screws, three screwdrivers, a cutting machine, five metal files, two pliers, a chisel, two iron plates, and various other small parts used in firearms assembly, police said. Of the six individuals arrested, two — Rajesh Kumar and Sunil Poddar — are from the Kasim Bazar area in Munger and were reportedly brought in to assist with arms manufacturing. The other four, Sandeep Yadav, Anup Paswan, Durgesh Upadhyay and Dayanand Yadav, belong to various villages within the Industrial Police Station's jurisdiction in Buxar district, police said. 'All six have previous criminal records, with cases registered against them under charges including murder, robbery, and violations of the Arms Act,' SP Arya said. The officer also said further investigation revealed that one of the accused, Durgesh Upadhyay, is allegedly associated with the Chandan Mishra gang. 'During interrogation, and when looking at past communications of the accused and technical evidence, the name of Dheeraj Mishra also emerged. He is also wanted in other cases by Buxar police,' the officer said. He claimed that the accused said the arms manufacturing had begun on August 1, just a day before it was busted. According to the officer, investigations have so far revealed that the group was allegedly preparing a retaliatory attack linked to the recent killing of Chandan Mishra, who was under treatment in Paras Hospital in Patna. 'One of the angles in our inquiry reveals that the weapons were potentially being prepared to avenge the recent killing of Chandan Mishra. The accused had reportedly identified certain individuals in Buxar as their targets,' Arya said. A case has been registered under relevant sections at Industrial Police Station and further investigation is ongoing to find any more potential accomplices and the full extent of the network. Raids are also underway to apprehend the absconding owner of the house Dinesh Yadav, police said.

Student from Bihar ‘main supplier of arms to Jammu gangsters', arrested: J-K Police

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday arrested a BTech student from Bihar who they said was the main supplier of arms and ammunition to gangs in Jammu and Samba districts. Kaif Ahmed, a resident of Bihar's Siwan district pursuing B Tech from the Central University of Jammu, was arrested following an investigation into a shootout at a wedding in Miran Sahib area on February 23, a police spokesman said. Police said Ahmed, who allegedly illegally brought weapons from Bihar and sold them to gangsters in Jammu, was booked under Sections 109/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and 3/25 of the Arms Act. They said Ahmed was arrested after Balwinder Singh alias Goru Jatt, one of the three accused in the February 23 shootout who was arrested two days ago, named him during interrogation. Police said while two of the accused in the shootout were arrested on the day of the incident itself, Jatt had absconded. Police said Jatt, a resident of Ranjri in Samba district's Vijaypur, was nabbed as a police team led by SHO Miran Sahib, Inspector Jai Pal Sharma, and Sub Inspector Ajesh Singh Jamwal continued to raid different locations. A pistol and some cartridges were recovered from Jatt, police said, adding investigations were on and more arrests likely.
