Two suspected gang members shot dead in Jitra highway shootout with police
Kedah police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh said before the incident, policemen patrolling the area came across a suspicious four-wheel drive vehicle before being ordered to stop.
'The suspects then opened fire on the police vehicle, ending in a shootout that left both suspects killed in the vehicle.
'In the vehicle, police found two firearms, a revolver and semi-automatic pistol, several bullets, a machete and tools for carrying out their criminal activities,' he told reporters at the scene.
He said a background check on one of the suspects, aged 41, revealed that he has more than 40 criminal records while the identity of the other suspect was still unknown due to lack of identification.
'We believe these two are part of a larger group that commits violent crimes across the country, including drug trafficking, gangsterism, factory break-ins and armed robberies... this gang is believed to have been active since 2020.
'So far, the Forensic Unit has found three bullet casings at the scene and the investigation process is still underway. The bodies of the two suspects have been sent to the Forensic Department of the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for autopsy and the case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code (for attempted murder),' he said.
Meanwhile, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) acting director Datuk Fadil Marsus, who was also present at the crime scene, said the two suspects are believed to be involved in a criminal gang committing serious crimes.
'We are investigating whether these suspects are linked to a criminal group in Klang, Selangor...the group is believed to have more than 30 members and police will take more aggressive action moving forward,' he said. — Bernama

Teoh Beng Hock group seeks to raise RM50,000 for UN advocacy trip

PETALING JAYA : The Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) is seeking to raise RM50,000 to fund Teoh Lee Lan's advocacy trip to Geneva, where she plans to meet United Nations officials to press for greater accountability over her brother's death. TBH-ADA president Ng Yap Hwa said a formal complaint was filed yesterday with three top officials at the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The complaint was lodged with Morris Tidball-Binz, UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions; Alice Jill Edwards, UN special rapporteur on torture; and Ganna Yudkivska, president of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. 'This is not just about putting public pressure on the government, but it is to ensure the government fulfils its international obligations (as a UN member),' Ng told a press conference today. 'The government should not wait until the international community scrutinises this case for them to do their due diligence.' Lee Lan said it was disheartening that the family had to seek international intervention after years of unanswered questions from the government. TBH-ADA had been organising forums throughout the country to rally public pressure on Beng Hock's death probe, which was classified as requiring no further action (NFA) by the Attorney‑General's Chambers because of insufficient evidence. Beng Hock was found dead on July 16, 2009 after falling from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, Selangor, after being questioned for several hours by officers from the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. An inquest into his death initially returned an open verdict. However, in 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that his death was caused by 'one or more unknown persons', including MACC officers. Before 2018, two special investigation teams had been set up to look into the incident – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – but both cases were classified as NFA by the public prosecutor. In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement. A reinvestigation was ordered by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in November last year, directing the police to re-examine all aspects of the case.

Amnesty launches online petition demanding justice for Beng Hock

(File pic) PETALING JAYA : Amnesty International Malaysia has joined a civil society group in launching an online petition advocating justice for Teoh Beng Hock, who was found dead in 2009 after being questioned by graft busters. The petition was launched on Amnesty's website in partnership with the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement. It urged the authorities to take 'immediate, transparent and meaningful action' to serve justice for the former political aide. This comes after the Attorney‑General's Chambers (AGC) classified a fresh probe into Teoh's death as requiring no further action (NFA) due to insufficient evidence to bring charges. 'Over this 11-year span, despite multiple efforts by civil society and Teoh's family to call for a proper investigation of the case and a court finding of criminal wrongdoing, no one has been held accountable, and the officers implicated were never charged. 'More than a decade later, justice remains elusive for Teoh and his family,' the organisations said in a statement. Teoh was found dead on July 16, 2009, after falling from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, Selangor. He had earlier been questioned for several hours by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers at the Selangor MACC headquarters.
