Lea Michele addresses 'can't read' rumours on Jake Shane's podcast, says Ryan Murphy was the one who first told her
Appearing on the Therapuss podcast with Jake Shane, Michele shared that Murphy once called her directly to ask if she had seen what was circulating.
'Ryan called me and was like, 'Have you heard this rumour?' And I was like, 'No, what's going on!'' she said on the podcast.
The rumour originated in 2017 on the One More Thing podcast, where hosts Jaye Hunt and Robert Ackerman jokingly dissected anecdotes from Naya Rivera's memoir Sorry Not Sorry. Rivera had written that Michele avoided improvisation on the Glee set. The hosts speculated that Michele memorised scripts due to an inability to read, and the theory gained unexpected traction online.
Michele previously refuted the rumour during a 2018 appearance on Watch What Happens Live, explaining, 'They said that Ryan Murphy would have to read the lines to me. Ryan called me and was like, 'Do people think I have the time in my life to come do this?''
In a 2022 interview with The New York Times, Michele called the rumour 'sad' and suggested that the scrutiny might not have existed if she were a man.
Although initially frustrated, the Funny Girl star has since responded with humour.
While the rumour has been widely debunked, Michele's decision to laugh along has helped reframe the conversation around it.

Henry Golding has shared an update on the upcoming Crazy Rich Asians TV series, indicating production may begin early next year. Golding, who played Nick Young in Jon M. Anne Burrell death under investigation, circumstances suggest a possible drug overdose
Celebrity chef and Food Network star Anne Burrell has died at the age of 55, and authorities are now investigating the possibility that her death was the result of a drug overdose, according to The New York Times. The outlet reported on June 20 that they reviewed an internal New York Police Department document indicating Burrell was found unresponsive in the shower surrounded by approximately 100 assorted pills. Burrell was discovered at her Brooklyn residence on the morning of June 17 by her husband, Stuart Claxton, whom she married in 2021. According to reports, Claxton last saw her alive at around 1 a.m. and found her cold and unresponsive in the shower several hours later, at approximately 7 a.m. Emergency responders were called, but Burrell was pronounced dead at 7:50 a.m. A New York City Fire Department spokesperson told Page Six that the 911 caller reported Burrell had suffered a 'cardiac arrest' and was 'dead on arrival.' Though the exact cause and manner of her death have not yet been confirmed, an autopsy is pending. The circumstances surrounding her passing are now being closely examined by investigators, including the presence of a large quantity of pills at the scene. Just hours before her death, Burrell had performed in an improv comedy show at The Second City New York and was reportedly in high spirits, making the suddenness of her death all the more shocking to fans and colleagues alike. Burrell, a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America in 1996, rose to prominence as a sous chef on Iron Chef America. She went on to host Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, which aired for nine seasons and earned her an Emmy nomination. She was best known as the host of Worst Cooks in America, and also appeared on numerous Food Network programs including Chopped, Chef Wanted, and Food Network Star. Her family confirmed her passing in a statement: 'Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend — her smile lit up every room she entered… her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.' Food Network also paid tribute, writing, 'Anne was a remarkable person and culinary talent… Our thoughts are with Anne's family, friends and fans during this time of tremendous loss.'
