Michael Jackson biopic's exhausting runtime confirmed in major update
The hugely-anticipated film was first announced in 2023, and will focus on the King of Pop's rollercoaster career in the spotlight before his death in 2009, at the age of 50.
His nephew, Jaafar Jackson, will make his screen debut as the Thriller singer alongside Colman Domingo, Katherine Jackson, Kat Graham and Miles Teller, while Antoine Fuqua signed up to direct.
While some got a glimpse at footage from Michael last year at CinemaCon, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer has now revealed that the anticipated release date has been pushed back.
In the Q4 2025 earnings call, via Variety, he also confirmed that it will have a run-time of around three-and-a-half hours in total.
'In regard to our Michael Jackson biopic, we're excited about the three-and-a-half hours of amazing footage from producer Graham King and director Antoine Fuqua, and we will be announcing a definitive release strategy and timing in the next few weeks,' the outlet reports he said.
'I would note that it is likely we will move Michael out of the fiscal year which will impact fiscal 2026 financial results but will bolster an already strong fiscal 2027 slate.'
The fiscal year ends in March 2026, so the film is now set to premiere at some point after April 1, 2026.
Michael was originally slated to be released last month, but reshoots were still taking place in March, meaning the date was then shuffled to October.
The project reportedly has an eyewatering budget of $155million, with speculation that it could be split into multiple parts due to the extensive footage.
According to Deadline, Lionsgate film chief Adam Fogelson touched on the speculation of a two-part biopic on the call, promising that more information will be available soon.
'At the end, when you look at the music library, when you look at what Michael Jackson was able to deliver in terms of music and contributions to art, whether or not that can be fit into one movie comfortably or not is a question that we are absolutely asking,' he continued.
'We'll be ready to answer more specifically in the coming weeks. More Trending
Addressing the huge runtime, he added: 'Any number of the biggest motion pictures over the last ten or 20 years have had first cuts of movies that were well in excess three and a half hours.
'And when Jon mentioned the footage, it wasn't a cut, it was an accumulation of scenes that we've seen.'
The movie, when we eventually get our hands on it, will offer fans a 'riveting and honest portrayal of the brilliant man who became the King of Pop.
'The film presents his triumphs and tragedies on an epic, cinematic scale – from his human side and personal struggles to his undeniable creative genius, exemplified by his most iconic performances.'

Adolescence star Ashley Walters was 'banned from US due to criminal record'
From Top Boy to Bulletproof and Adolescence, it's fair to say that Ashley Walters is one of the shining talents in British acting today. Through sheer determination, the 43-year-old, who was born in south London, has forged a lucrative pathway for himself in the industry. Following the breakout success of Philip Barantini's Emmy-nominated Adolescence on Netflix, which starred Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper, Walters is currently working on an M. Night Shyamalan supernatural thriller called Remain alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. This came after Steven Spielberg's office called him asking him to consider a role in his latest film. However, many fans might not realise that this is Ashley's first ever major role in a US movie. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. Speaking to Variety, the actor shed light on his long journey to success and how he was 'basically banned' from America for two decades due to his criminal record. 'Five years ago there was absolutely no chance that I was going to be in this position,' Ashley told the publication. 'I was basically banned from the country. There were visa issues. I had a criminal record.' In 2002, Walters – who was just 19 – was sentenced to 18 months in a young offenders institution for possession of an illegal firearm. Despite having already appeared on a number of TV roles, including BBC's Grange Hill, after his first acting role at the age of 10 in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Walters was known for being in the hip hop group the So Solid Crew. In the end, he only ended up serving seven months of his sentence after promising to focus on acting. He said: 'After a few years of not being able to get a visa, I said to myself, 'Well, it's not going to happen for me, I've got to make do with what I've got and fulfil my career and my destiny here in the U.K.' So I kind of stopped worrying about it.' Taking that advice, he began to build his acting profile, winning best newcomer at the British Independent Film Award for his lead performance in Saul Dibb's Bullet Boy in 2004. Other roles included Speed Racer and 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin, which was filmed in Ireland. His career then truly began to take off after the 2011 gangland drama series Top Boy, which was pulled from Channel 4 in 2014, but flourished again on Netflix five years later. View More » Now, with numerous opportunities presenting themselves to him in the States, Ashley concluded by saying: 'It's another reason why I cherish this moment so much. I want to do everything I can before someone takes away that visa on my passport.' Got a story? Bring Her Back star has an insanely famous grandad and fans are only just realising
We'd love to be a fly on the wall at their family get togethers The Philippou brothers' highly-anticipated horror film Bring Her Back is out in the UK tomorrow (July 26), two years on from their critically-acclaimed cinematic debut, Talk To Me. Bring Her Back tells the story of two siblings, Piper and Andy, who are fostered following the untimely death of their father. However, their new caregiver Laura (Sally Hawkins) is still grieving the loss of her own daughter, and acts in increasingly odd ways after their arrival at her home. Among the cast are rising Australian stars Jonah Wren Phillips (Sweet Tooth) and Sora Wong, alongside British actor Billy Barratt. Billy, who plays Andy in the film, may already look familiar to some due to his long list of acting credits which includes appearances in Kraven the Hunter, Sharknado 5 and Invasion. He became the youngest actor ever to win an International Emmy Award for Best Actor when he was just 13 thanks to his role in BBC drama, Responsible Child. However, what fans may not know is that Billy has an insanely famous grandad. The star is related to Welsh music icon Shakin' Stevens (real name Michael Barratt). The music legend's hits include Merry Christmas Everyone, Because I Love You and Give Me Your Heart Tonight. He isn't the only famous family member either. Billy's dad is a sought-after mix engineer called Dean James Barratt who has worked across film and TV and with some big music acts too, including Jess Glynne and Craig David. Shaky, as he is known by fans, is Dean's dad. Meanwhile Billy's mum is also a famous face. Carolyn Owlett is a model, TV and radio host and singer in The 411. She also takes on the role of manager for Billy. Ahead of Bring Her Back's UK release, Billy shared how he got into the mindset for his character Andy. In an interview with Deadline, he revealed: "There were moments where Danny [Philippou] would basically lock me in a room by myself, and he goes, 'Just try and get in character.' "He shut the door, I'm not allowed to leave. I ended up just sitting there with no phone, no nothing — which is great, by the way. I just sat there for ages, and then when I came back outside of that door, back into the scene … you just feel like you are there are in it." He admitted that the technique had actually developed him as an actor, adding: "Seeing the effect it had actually helped me so much, not just in the script but in future projects as well. So thank you, Danny." Bring Her Back releases in UK cinemas July 26

I woke up feeling like I'd been hit by a bus, nothing could prepare me for the pain when I woke up after five litres of fat transferred to my arms and shoulders to give me a six pack
A This Morning guest confessed that he felt like he'd been hit by a bus after he had five litres of fat transferred to his arms and shoulders from his stomach to give him a six pack. Michael Allen and his wife Tanisha appeared on the ITV show on Friday to chat to hosts Olivia Attwood, 34, and Dermot O'Leary, 52, about the extreme measures he has gone to in a bid to get his dream body. The dad, who appeared as a case study in Olivia's documentary Price of Perfection, underwent a four-hour operation of 360 liposuction, which saw his stomach fat get transferred into his shoulders and arms. Michael, who paid £12,990 for the op, confessed: 'Waking up immediately afterwards, I felt like I'd been hit by a bus.' An intrigued Olivia asked: 'Was it worse than you expected? 'Nothing could prepare me for the pain when I woke up, not at all. It was everywhere [the pain] because it was fat transfer,' Michael confessed. Olivia pointed out that he couldn't put on his shoes, to which Michael added: 'I couldn't put socks on for three weeks!' Dermot asked if he had regretted his decision when he woke up and Michael told them: 'I wanted to see the results... 'I wanted to have a look down but I was too scared because I was in so much pain.' Michael, who said that he lost his six pack at around 25, works in aesthetics and had already tried 8-12 week stints at the gym. But he explained that it affected his work life as he had to wake up earlier and it could have jeopardised his performance while injecting his client's faces. Michael said: 'For me personally I always had a six pack until I was about 25. I think life gets busy, we had kids, we became busier. 'We started enjoying the finer things in life. We ate out, drank, dined, we indulged. 'I used to look in the mirror before getting into bed, grab my belly and go that's me now. Dermot asked if he had regretted his decision when he woke up and Michael told them: 'I wanted to see the results... 'I wanted to have a look down but I was too scared because I was in so much pain' 'I never thought about anything that could help me to the extent where I could have four hours of surgery and have a six pack again.' Although Michael now has a buff body, Tanisha confessed that she didn't mind him when he had more weight on his stomach. Tanisha told Dermot and Olivia: 'I quite liked the dad bod. 'I don't think it didn't suit him, but I understood the fact he wanted that six pack again.' Right at the end of the interview, Olivia wanted to know if she could have a sneak peek of his stomach. 'Last time I saw you, you were on a table with blood!' she said. As Michael joked: 'What camera has the best angle?!' he lifted up his white t-shirt. Dermot said: 'Wowzer' and Olivia added: 'They are some serious abs, he's a happy guy. 'That's a genuine smile.'
