Nagpur: The traffic department of the city police has once again intensified their
Footpath Freedom drive
and took actions against 2,233 encroachments and
illegal parking
across all 10 zones of traffic police in city. These actions were taken between May 6 and 10.The traffic department launched the Footpath Freedom drive on January 17 this year following several complaints of encroachment and illegal parking on city footpaths, which led to accidents as pedestrians were forced to walk on the streets.
The issue was also raised multiple times by Union minister Nitin Gadkari. Following this, the traffic department, under DCP (Traffic) Archit Chandak, launched the Footpath Freedom drive. By May 5, the traffic department took around 20,447 actions. However, encroachments on footpaths started again, so the traffic department intensified their drive once more.Out of all ten traffic zones, the highest number of actions were taken in the Sitabuldi zone (469), followed by Sadar (349) and Sakkardara (296). Interestingly, the Indora and MIDC traffic zones reported the least number of actions, with 100 each. The traffic department has warned encroachers, hawkers, and citizens involved in illegal parking on footpaths that strict action would be taken against them under relevant sections of the law.According to citizens, every time the traffic department or Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) officials take action against the encroachers, they flee but return after officials leave. In the recent actions, the traffic department targeted areas such as Sitabuldi market, collector office road, VCA Square, multiple locations in Sadar, Railway Station Road, Tukdoji Square, Jadu Mahal Road, and other locations in the city. The traffic department also used bulldozers to remove permanent encroachments.

NMC's ward structure draft with minor tweaks by Aug 5
Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has finalised a draft of its new ward structure with only minor changes, which will be submitted to the state's urban development department by August 5. Despite retaining the earlier four-member-per-ward system used in 2017 civic polls, the rising population and emergence of new localities have led to growing speculation among political parties and voters about how the final ward boundaries will look. The NMC administration has been functioning under an appointed administrator after the elected civic body's term ended on March 6, 2022. The NMC's draft has already received approval and signatures of the internal committee. Once submitted, it will be open to objections and suggestions from political parties and the general public. This phase will offer a clearer picture of any adjustments made, particularly those that could influence the electoral prospects of key players in the city. The 2017 elections were held under a four-member ward system, with 37 wards having four corporators each and one ward electing three members — bringing the total to 151 corporators. The same ward structure is expected to be continued for the upcoming elections. BJP, which has ruled NMC for three consecutive terms, is working to maintain its dominance. In 2017, the party won a commanding 108 seats, followed by Congress with 29, BSP with 12, Shiv Sena with 2, and NCP with 1. As per electoral norms, following the announcement of the draft ward structure, a lottery will be held to determine reservation of seats for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and women. Of the proposed 156 seats in the civic body, 50% will be reserved for women. Tentatively, 12 seats are expected to be reserved for SC women and 6 for ST women. The State Election Commission recently reviewed poll readiness in Nagpur division and suggested a three-phase election process. Local leaders expect elections to be held by February 2026, possibly after municipal council and zilla parishad polls. Nonetheless, political parties and aspiring candidates have already begun preparations on the ground.

The Union government's initiative to introduce the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, in the Lok Sabha is a significant stride in reforming the functioning of National Sports Federations (NSFs). While the Bill is intended to apply uniformly across all recognised NSFs, its implications are particularly pronounced in the context of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which has historically repelled governmental oversight due to cricket's popularity and financial dominance. The BCCI has maintained that since it does not take any financial grant from the government, it is not subject to policies applicable to other sporting federations. This stand has met with challenges, notably in the landmark BCCI vs the Cricket Association of Bihar 2016 judgment, where the Supreme Court held that the BCCI functions due to a tacit recognition by the Government of India, and the government has the power to regulate its activities through legislation. That legislation is finally near.
