Can the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N Dethrone the Tesla Model 3 Performance?

Miami Herald14 hours ago
Tesla arguably kicked off the introduction of performance EV models with the Tesla Roadster way back in 2008, but it's a wildly different landscape now, and you can purchase a very fast EV from automakers like BMW, Ford, and everything in between. One of the most competent performance EVs out there is the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N, and now, there's a sedan version in town. Sharing a powertrain but getting smaller and cheaper means the new IONIQ 6 N has the Tesla Model 3 Performance squarely in its sights.
The IONIQ 6 N takes an early lead on the Tesla Model 3 Performance - on paper, anyway. The IONIQ 6 N shares a powertrain with its predecessor, the 5 N, which means up to 641 horsepower on tap when you click into N-Grin Boost mode, and 567 pound-feet of torque available whenever. Hyundai quotes a zero to 60 mph time of 3.2 seconds. Both the IONIQ 6 N and the Tesla rely on all-wheel drive and dual electric motors, but while the Tesla Model 3 Performance isn't a slouch, it loses the initial comparison. Base horsepower and torque figures sit at 510 and 554, respectively. Surprisingly, though, Tesla claims a quicker zero to 60 mph time, estimating the sprint takes just 2.9 seconds.
One reason for the quicker sprint to 60 mph might be the Tesla's lower curb weight. The fastest Model 3 tips the scales at a fairly light 4,054 pounds. We don't have official numbers for Hyundai's IONIQ 6 N, but we can take a guess. Comparing the IONIQ 5 to the IONIQ 5 N reveals the standard all-wheel drive car weighs 4,608 pounds, while the N version weighs 4861 pounds. A regular IONIQ 6 with all-wheel drive weighs 4,462 pounds. Assuming the 6 N gains the same amount of weight from the full N treatment, we can guess the IONIQ 6 N's weight at around 4,715 pounds. That 700-pound disadvantage relative to the Model 3 Performance could cost it first place on the dragstrip.
So, finally, there's the price. A bigger horsepower figure doesn't always mean a higher MSRP, but the IONIQ 6 N will start a little bit higher than the Tesla Model 3 Performance. Hyundai hasn't released pricing yet, but since the IONIQ 6 is around $5,000 less expensive than the IONIQ 5, the base MSRP should be right around $60,000. That's a $5,000 premium compared to the Tesla, which starts at $54,990. The Tesla also likely touts a longer range. The mechanically identical 5 N offers an estimated 221 miles, while the Model 3 Performance makes it 298 miles on a full charge.
On the surface, the IONIQ 6 N may look decidedly more like a sidegrade than an upgrade compared to the Tesla Model 3 Performance. However, there are also other key areas where the Hyundai sedan should excel. The Hyundai IONIQ 6 N gets massive brake rotors that dwarf the Tesla Model 3's, measuring 15.7 inches in the front and 14.1 inches in the rear. That's about an inch bigger in the back and nearly two in front. While both vehicles share 20-inch aluminum wheels, only the IONIQ 6 N offers 275-section tires on all four wheels. Finally, the IONIQ 6 N offers a lauded "fake shift," which allows drivers to "change gears" via paddle shifters. These differences may seem small, but they could make a big difference, especially in the kind of driving situations the cars are ostensibly built for.
The Hyundai IONIQ 6 N and Tesla Model 3 Performance are more similar than different, and both look to be incredibly competent performance sedans. Do we think the IONIQ 6 N is objectively superior to the Model 3 Performance? We'll have to drive it to find out. That said, it certainly has some clear advantages. At the very least, the competition will force Tesla to take notes.

Move Over Telsa Powerwall. EcoFlow Says This New Battery Is Better for Disaster-Prone Areas

Between floods, hurricanes, and brownouts, being a homeowner in states like California, Texas and Florida can make it challenging to keep the lights on. A whole-home battery backup is usually a good solution, letting you charge the battery while the power is on and then kick in when the power goes out. EcoFlow is the latest to enter this market with the Ocean Pro, which the company says is the first 'full integrated, multi-source home energy system in the US.' What that means in simpler terms, is that, unlike other whole-home backup systems like the Tesla Powerwall 3, the Ocean Pro has an "infinite backup supply." This system doesn't just rely on one energy source, like solar panels or the grid, to keep itself topped up. It can automatically pull power from a variety of sources, including solar panels, high-capacity batteries, portable generators and even gas standby generators. That means multiple layers of power backup options if one option fails. The EcoFlow Ocean Pro works with EV chargers and other home appliances. EcoFlow Technically, this isn't an unprecedented technology. Large portable power stations like the Anker Solix F3800 Plus can accept power from a gas generator, AC input and solar input, though you won't find the gas generator input on a fixed system like the Powerwall. 'Ocean Pro isn't just backup power, it's complete energy independence made simple,' said Jenny Zhang, President of North America Residential Energy Business at EcoFlow. 'We're excited to bring a powerful solution like Ocean Pro to the US. market and give families a smarter, stronger and more reliable energy system built for the challenges they face today.' Power and capabilities The Ocean Pro can be expanded to work with multiple batteries and inverters. EcoFlow EcoFlow is positioning the Ocean Pro to outperform competitors like Tesla's Powerwall 3, claiming twice the solar capacity, double the backup power and 67% more peak power. One Ocean Pro battery provides 10kWh. Need even more power? You can add a second inverter to double the system's output and storage capacity, which is expandable up to 80kWh. With 24kW of continuous output, EcoFlow says the Ocean Pro can support all of a home's appliances simultaneously, including up to two 5-ton HVAC systems, EV chargers, pool pumps and refrigerators. During an outage, the Ocean Pro has a switchover of 10 milliseconds. It's also designed for durability, with a fire-prevention module, enhanced flood resistance up to 2.6 feet, IP67 waterproofing, UL 9540B safety certification and a 15-year warranty, which is five years longer than industry standards. Energy savings The Ocean Pro can intelligently monitor energy prices to decide when the time is right to sell energy back to the grid or run your home off battery. EcoFlow Beyond just backup, EcoFlow is touting potential electricity bill savings. Through the EcoFlow app, users can monitor their energy usage in real time and use AI-powered forecasting to predict weather, pricing trends and energy consumption so it can take over running their homes during times of high peak demand. There's also smart home integration built in for thermostats, EV chargers, Apple Home, Google Nest and Alexa. EcoFlow says the Ocean Pro can give you savings of up to 118% a year on electricity costs. Perhaps the biggest selling point for those keen on saving on energy bills is that the Ocean Pro can also operate in grid-tied mode across all markets, allowing homeowners to sell excess energy back to the grid once the battery is fully charged. EcoFlow is also setting up its Virtual Power Plant network, which manages the energy you're selling back based on real-time grid conditions and electricity prices. By design, the Ocean Pro will discharge power during peak pricing peak grid demand, letting your system optimize battery use and earning you additional income even when solar generation is limited. All this makes the Ocean Pro a potentially very compelling alternative to the Powerwall, though more portable systems like EcoFlow's Delta Pro Ultra and the Anker Solix F3800 Plus can offer most of the same backup options, including solar panels and gas generators, without needing the same costly install. They also have smart chops if you use the compatible smart panel like the EcoFlow Smart Home Panel 2 and Anker Solix Home Power Panel. Pricing and availability EcoFlow is working with 100 installation partners for the Ocean Pro. EcoFlow The Ocean Pro already has a counterpart in Europe, called the PowerOcean series, that has 17,000 installs. In the US, preorders for the EcoFlow Ocean Pro begin on July 15. You can register on EcoFlow's official website to learn more and place your order through an authorized EcoFlow installation partner. Each installation includes a free one-on-one energy consultation, app-based progress tracking and local support. Nearly 100 installation partners have signed up with EcoFlow ahead of the launch. The Ocean Pro is available in three finishes: aluminum, walnut wood and carbon fiber. Pricing information isn't available yet, but we'll update this article when we learn more.

Tesla finally selling in India - though at a hefty price premium

Tesla has started selling cars in India, the world's most populous country – but at a hefty price tag. Tesla, which is facing slumping US sales and complications from CEO Elon Musk's political entanglements, opened its first showroom in Mumbai on Tuesday. The company needs to boost its sales, and pushing into a new market with untapped buyers could help. The Tesla web site shows the price of a Model Y at 61,07,190 rupees, or about $71,000. However, the same car is listed on the company's site for US buyers at about $45,000 before applying a $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles (EV), which would lower the cost to $37,500. (That tax credit is due to expire at the end of September.) Tesla has had a long-stated desire to sell in India, but Indian tariffs on foreign autos, which can more than double the cost of a vehicle there, have been the barrier, according to the World Trade Organization and Tesla executives. 'We've been working on getting into India. India is a very hot market,' said Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja in a call with investors in April. 'It will be a great market to enter because India has a big middle class.' But he said the tariffs 'create a little bit of tension, which we're trying to work around.' India is the third largest market for auto sales behind China and the United States. The absence in India has hurt Tesla's global sales, which are suffering the largest sales decline in the company's history in the face of increased competition, and a backlash in some markets to CEO Elon Musk's political activities. Nearly half of Tesla's sales revenue comes from the United States, while just over 20% comes from China. The other 30% comes from other countries. Tesla is not only losing sales to legacy automakers that have increased their EV offerings, but it faces growing competition from Chinese EV makers. In fact, Tesla is poised to lose its title of the world's largest EV maker to Chinese automaker BYD, even though BYD is not able to sell in United States. Tesla executives have spoken of a desire to build a plant in India, but at the moment its existing plants in the United States, China and Germany have more capacity than there is demand for its vehicles. Its plans for another plant in Mexico are currently on hold.

Tesla makes Model Y available in India for first time

Telsa entered into India's market with its electric SUV the Model Y, on Tuesday. File Photo courtesy of Tesla July 15 (UPI) -- Tesla entered India's market for the first time on Monday, making its Model Y SUV available and opening its first showroom in the nation. The SUV is going to have a starting price of $68,000 with a self-driving add-on for $7,000. Customers can order the SUV for registration by paying a deposit of around $260 starting on Tuesday. The company opened a showroom in Mumbai. Additionally, it plans to set up experience centers, service centers, delivery systems, charging stations, and logistic hubs throughout the country, according to a report. Tesla's high price in India is due to its 70% tariff on EV Imports and about 30% luxury tax. Experts said that due to these high prices, Tesla will not be competing with local EV Companies instead, its competition will be in the premium automotive market. "I won't say that these prices are completely out of range because you will find buyers in India for all price points," Vivek Vaidya, global client leader for mobility at research firm Frost & Sullivan, said. "The question is whether they are going to threaten the mass market. The answer to that is no because the most popular selling cars probably sell at one-tenth of this price."' According to government data, India is the fourth largest automotive market with nearly 6 million vehicles made yearly and plans to have 30% of its automotive sales to be electric by 2030.
