Fiona Phillips' husband's devastating cancer confession amid Alzheimer's battle

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Fiona Phillips and her husband, Martin Frizzell, have candidly opened up about the former GMTV star's Alzheimer's condition and Martin shared an honest admission
Fiona Phillips was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2023 and now her husband has made a heartbreaking confession as they deal with the condition. Martin Frizzell, 65, has admitted he wishes the former GMTV star, 64, had "cancer instead".
Martin, who has been married to Fiona for 28 years opened up in the couple's joint memoir titled Remember When: My Life with Alzheimer's. The release comes after Fiona has continued to be open about her condition following her diagnosis two years ago.

And now, in an excerpt from the book, Martin's devastating confession was laid bare. "It's a shocking thing to say, but at least then she might have had a chance of a cure, and certainly would have had a treatment pathway and an array of support and care packages," he said when speaking of his wish she had been diagnosed with cancer instead.

The excerpt, which was shared in the Mail, continued: "But that's not there for Alzheimer's. Just like there are no funny or inspiring TikTok videos or fashion shoots with smiling, healthy, in-remission survivors."
Martin added that it felt as though the pair had been "left to cope alone" post diagnosis. He admits that since the diagnosis, he has took on tasks which he had once taken for granted. The pair have also hired a trained carer to help provide the best attention for the former TV star. Martin also stepped down from his ITV position in February to take care of Fiona.
Martin explained how on bad days Fiona experiences moments of confusion which sees her demanding to see her parents who have sadly passed away. And Fiona also shared how she much she was struggling to accept the diagnosis in the beginning.
In her own words, she said the challenges she faces are like "trying to chase a £5 note that's fallen out of your purse on a gusty day". She candidly said that it felt as though every time she had caught it, it blew out of reach once more.

Speaking of why the couple decided to write the book, Fiona added: "Gradually, Martin and I thought maybe I should start telling more people. Martin felt that if more people knew what was happening to me then they wouldn't judge me if I did ever start behaving unusually – not that I thought I did. It was hardly like I was going down the street half-clothed, yelling at people."
According to the NHS, Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia in the UK. Dementia is the name for a group of symptoms associated with an ongoing decline of brain functioning and it can affect memory, thinking skills and other mental abilities.
Fiona had initially thought she was having menopause symptoms when she first started experiencing "brain fog and anxiety".
Sadly, the star already had first hand experience of Alzheimer's having cared for her parents after both of them were also diagnosed with the condition.

Kmart sends nostalgic shoppers racing over $29 gadget: 'OMG I need it NOW'

Shoppers are racing to Kmart Australia stores to get their hands on a mini version of a retro item that's made an unexpected comeback. Alongside a resurgent interest in all things Y2K fashion and style, early 2000s inspired digital camera have suddenly become trendy again. This is despite most people already having a digital camera available at their fingertips via their smartphone. Kmart have jumped on board the trend by offering a range of standalone digital cameras. But the latest addition to their range - a cute key-chain sized Mini Digital Camera, priced at only $29 - has quickly earned legions of fans. The mass retailer released a TikTok video this week that showcased the camera being clipped onto a set of keys, emphasising its petite size. But despite its adorable stature, the video also demonstrated that it is a 'real' functioning digital camera with surprisingly good picture quality - and video recording capability to boot. The mass budget retailer's latest social media video is captioned: 'Yes, it's a real camera and yes, we will be bringing it everywhere with us these school holidays'. Within a day of being released, the TikTok video amassed over 400,000 views and 20,000 likes. Kmart fans couldn't contain their excitement about the mini-sized version of the retro item. 'OMG THATS SO CUTE,' exclaimed one shopper. 'I NEED THIS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!' excitedly declared another. 'I bought it when it just landed I love it! Can't stop using it,' another happy customer added. The online product description explains that the camera has a 'compact design and user-friendly features'. It also suggests the tiny device is 'ideal for travel, vlogging or spontaneous everyday snapshots'. The dimensions of the miniature gadget are 4.24cm (L) x 2.92cm (H) - and the screen display size is 2.43cm. The compact camera also comes with a USB charging and data cable, keychain, lanyard and 32GB memory card. It also has an built-in flash for night time photographers, as well as six filter options to jazz up images. But among the hundreds of replies to the recent viral video were confused remarks about 'why' demand for digital camera existed given that most people own smartphones. 'Other than for kids who don't have phones… why? We have camera's with us every day,' questioned one person. To this, a commenter offered a simple one-word explanation: 'Nostalgia'. Another added: 'Digital cameras are making a short comeback with the youth, just like bad fashion.' A third person confirmed that even though we've all 'got cameras in our pockets' they were certain 'plenty' of people are 'going to want' this cute buy. The comments were also filled with questions from curious shoppers about some of the functionality aspects of the camera. In reply to queries about the 'quality' of the pictures taken on the camera, one person confirmed that it 'is actually really good'. Others asked whether the device could capture videos, to which Kmart's own social media account confirmed that the camera had the capability to record videos. However those who haven't previously owned digital cameras were stumped as to how images taken on the camera could later be transferred to a phone or laptop. Some helpful replies explained that the camera's SD memory card could be inserted directly into some laptops to extract the images, or that you could transfer the files via the provided USB data and cable cord. Photos taken on the camera can also be printed out by placing the memory card into a photo printing machine – like the ones found in-store at Kmart. A recent statistic from eBay Australia revealed that searches for digital cameras have surged more than 48 per cent in the past year alone, with iconic 2000s-inspired models particularly in high demand.

Transaction review – ITV's anarchic new sitcom dives right into the most taboo parts of trans life

It's a long time since ITV set the comedy world alight. The 1990s threw up some random highlights – Jeeves and Wooster, the ubiquitous Mr Bean – but the next decade was something of a sitcom wasteland until Derren Litten's outrageously funny Benidorm pitched up. That was followed a mere six years later by Plebs (essentially: if The Inbetweeners were Romans) and job centre-based comedy The Job Lot, whose title's feel of this-pun-dictated-the-entire-premise still causes me to break out in a cold sweat. Yet despite these shows being the broadcaster's only notable contributions to the form this century, ITV comedy still feels like a distinctive subgenre, one defined by old-school story beats and all the edge of a bouncy ball. Into this decidedly unradical template struts Jordan Gray, the singer turned standup who in 2022 became the first transgender person to headline the London Palladium with her Edinburgh-award nominated hit show Is It A Bird? With her new sitcom, the 36-year-old provides the mainstream comedy mould with fresh fodder. We first encounter our hero, Liv, via a parody of one of those cheesy 00s razor adverts: a silky dressing gown is dropped; blades glide along already spotless shins and armpits – but then this classy babe begins shaving her face and urinating in the sink. The punchline? Her longsuffering housemate Tom (Thomas Gray) has been sitting on the toilet the whole time. From that point on, you suspect Transaction is honouring a sitcom style powered by an endless stream of silly, semi-predictable jokes and ludicrously contrived storylines in exchange for the chance to present a nuanced portrait of a transgender woman at a time when dehumanisation remains rife. Liv is charismatic and clever, but she is also lazy, workshy, irritating, jealous and selfish. These are all positives, by the way – anyone who thinks progressive representation in comedy involves nice characters being nice to each other all day long is sorely mistaken. Transaction's major arc involves Tom's employer, a supermarket called Pellocks, which has caused controversy by inadvertently plastering 'lady boys get out' on a billboard. Obviously this isn't remotely plausible, but such creaky plotting does give stressed-out, well-meaning boss Simon (Nick Frost) a reason to hire Liv – who he somehow knows is Tom's flatmate – in an effort to quell the protest outside. Once she realises she can't be fired (the optics would be terrible), Liv decides to be an awful employee. But she does disarm the indignant crowds with an irreverent speech. 'When I told my dad I was becoming a woman,' she announces solemnly, 'he said I could never pull it off. I said I'd probably get a doctor to do that bit, Father.' You could envisage a variation on this joke being told, wince-inducingly, by a blokey comic decades ago. Coming from Gray, it feels like snort-inducingly harmless fun. That said, walking the line between enlightened and unreconstructed humour is not always so straightforward. Liv's other colleagues are conscientious Millie (the charming Francesca Mills), who has dwarfism, and 'beefy Linda' (an impeccably deadpan Kayla Meikle), who is Black. When Liv declares that the trio resemble 'the setup to a joke that would get you uninvited to Christmas dinner,' moments after delivering a duff quip about Millie's height, it all starts to feel less bracingly modern. Yet there is something impressively sophisticated going on here, too. Liv refuses to pay Tom rent, claiming she's saving up for 'gender realignment' surgery. Tom is sceptical: 'I thought you didn't want a vagina? You said you were scared of a bee flying up in it.' Indeed, Liv is later horrified to discover Simon has started a fundraiser for said surgery. Transaction's brashness doesn't stop it discussing what has traditionally been one of the more delicate – and taboo – elements of the trans experience. Then again, Gray has long had something to say on this topic: her 2022 appearance on Channel 4's Friday Night Live saw her play the piano with her penis, resulting in 1,500 Ofcom complaints. It's part of a refreshing rebellion against the status quo offered by this show, but Transaction remains markedly retro overall: at its core, this is a broad comic caper about some unrealistically stupid people messing about in a supermarket. In later episodes, the narrative sprawls into generic workplace plotlines: crushes, rivalries, minor slapstick disasters. It's a bit dull – not something you could ever say about Liv herself, whose humour is puerile but punchy and unexpected. Instead, I am left wondering what Gray might have made outside the confines of an old-fashioned sitcom on a channel that tries to crowd-please, but rarely manages to make history. Transaction is on ITVX now.

As the conversation started to heat up, Rheo talked about not having an orgasm though actual sex, to which Harry replied: "I think I could probably uh probably put that right at some point." Teasing sex in their future, he said: "I think we'll maybe see sooner than you think." Harry's comments left fans squirming at home, with one saying: "Harry makes my skin crawl. "I'd rather be sick in my hands and clap then hear a chat up line from him." This one added: "Harry's comments are so sleazy!" Another said: "Poor Harry's mum having to watch him talks like that!" But Harry isn't the only one with a wandering eye, as Helena has also been making a play for Casa Amor lad Ty. But it doesn't look like there will be any love lost between Harry and Helena. Asked by a fellow Islander if he missed Helena, he bluntly said: "No, not really." Despite him cracking on with Rheo, some fans speculated that the former couple "never really split up". It came after the brunette stunner was revealed as a Casa Amor bombshell recently, alongside five other females. As Emma claimed that he cheated when he brought girls into the home they previously shared together, viewers have suggested there may still be feelings brewing between the exes. Others have suggested the pair - who locked lips in a challenge - never really broke up at all. During the chat about their relationship downfall, one fan wrote: "I swear these two are still in a relationship, it's just the vibe I'm getting." A second put: "Definitely still in a relationship hence why he's not making it serious with anyone." A third put: "Makes sense that they are still together most of what they are saying sounds fake." Love Island 2025 - Casa Amor girls WHO are the latest bombshells heading into the spin-off villa? The Sun exclusively reported the identities of the six beauties heading into the ITV2 spin-off villa, after it was teased during last week's episode. The Love Island newbies were seen strolling into the compound clad in swimwear - with one already having a connection to Harry. On the show's official Instagram page it teased: "Amor the merrier… who's ready for Casa Amor?" and now we can report the full line-up. Lauren Wood, 26, Emma Munro, 30 Lucy Quinn, 21 Yasmin Broom, 26 Andrada Pop, 27 Rheo Parnell, 26 "You think, 'oh yes, let me just f*** this up', like there's just no need for any other woman to be in my house." As he tried to assure her that he would 'be there', she later corrected his version of the timeline of their relationship. He told her: "You don't have very high thoughts of me, or you don't think a lot of me, but I am here. I think I said that in the letter to you years ago." To which she replied: "Years ago? You mean in February?" She then added: "We make the choice not to be together because we know that you can't give me what I need, and that's why it's not because we don't love each other, we have to like, be strong enough to like, stand on that decision." Fans of the show took to social media in droves as they were left completely flabbergasted by the semi-pro footballers past behaviour. 7 Emma entered Casa Amor with five other bombshells Credit: Eroteme 7 Harry was stunned to see his ex on a balcony in scenes aired on Friday Credit: Shutterstock Editorial
