Iowa football 2025 season positional preview: Quarterbacks
Following the graduation of Nate Stanley, the Hawkeyes have gone through numerous quarterback options including Spencer Petras, Alex Padilla, Cade McNamara and Deacon Hill with little success. It's been frustrating for fans to watch a great defense and special teams get let down consistently by subpar quarterback play.
But, for the first time in half a decade, that position might have an answer.
This is the first part of my Iowa football positional previews for the 2025 season. Starting with quarterback, I'll go position by position down the Iowa roster and update you on the key players for the Hawks in 2025. So, grab your popcorn and a comfortable seat and let's get started.
Starter: Mark Gronowski
2024 stats: 2,721 passing yards, 23 TDs, 7 INTs, 61% completion at South Dakota State
The arrival of Mark Gronowski on campus has many Hawkeye fans excited about the quarterback position in 2025. Gronowski was a four-year starter for the Jackrabbits, leading them to a pair of FCS national championships in 2022 and 2023.
Gronowski won the 2023 Walter Payton Award, given to the most outstanding FCS player. He was a first-team FCS All-American in 2023 as well. In total, he went 49-6 as a starter with 10,308 passing yards and 93 touchdowns while completing 63.5% of his passes.
Gronowski had offseason shoulder surgery that limited his work in spring ball, but all signs point toward him being good to go for upcoming practices and the regular season.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound signal caller has ideal size for the position and is very mobile, as illustrated by his 1,767 career rushing yards and 37 rushing touchdowns with the Jackrabbits. If he plays up to his ability in 2025, Iowa could make some national noise.
Projected Backup: Hank Brown
2024 stats: 27-43 for 403 passing yards, 6 TDs, 3 INTs across four games at Auburn
Iowa has a few options for the primary backup to Gronowksi, but I decided to go with the 6-foot-4, 208-pound Auburn transfer Hank Brown. A three-star prospect out of Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, Brown saw some action with the Tigers in 2024 after a redshirt season in 2023. While he wasn't great, Brown is still just a redshirt sophomore and has big-time experience from within the SEC.
That experience plus his potential upside is enough for me to slot him into the projected backup role this season. And with Gronowski playing his final year in college, Brown will be a contender for the starting role in 2026. If Brown isn't the primary backup, it will be one of these other quarterback options.
Other QB Options
If Iowa can get legit production from its quarterbacks in 2025, it's going to be a fun season in Iowa City. We'll just have to wait and see what they get.

Colorado football lands commitment from top class of 2026 linebacker
Colorado football and head coach Deion Sanders picked up a commitment from top-ranked class of 2026 linebacker Rodney Colton Jr. on Saturday night. Colton, a coveted four-star linebacker, immediately becomes the highest-rated recruit to commit to Sanders' class of 2026 cohort. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound defensive playmaker chose the Buffaloes over his other finalists, Florida State and Ole Miss. The Newnan, Georgia, native visited Boulder on June 20, and the Buffs seemed like the favorites ever since. Colton also took official visits to Ole Miss, Florida State, Penn State, UCLA and SMU, which indicates the number of big-time programs in the running for his signature. 247Sports Composite ranks Colton as the No. 303 player in the nation, No. 21 linebacker and the No. 36 player from his home state of Georgia. Colorado's class of 2026 now rises to nine commitments as Deion Sanders and staff continue a hot start to the month. Five commitments have joined the class since July 1, as it is now ranked No. 79 nationally. Colton is the program's second blue-chip recruit, with four-star cornerback Preston Ashley being the other. Despite CU's class still ranking last in the Big 12, Colton's commitment, arguably the most significant of the current cycle, adds to the recruiting momentum that has been with the Buffs since late June. How to watch the 2025 MLB Draft today
The time has come to find out where Texas A&M standout and record-holder Jace LaViolette will hear his name called in the 2025 MLB Draft. Last year, following a College World Series runner-up finish, A&M had seven players drafted, only Ryan Prager chose not to sign and instead returned to Aggieland. This past season didn't go as the Aggies hoped under first-year head coach Michael Earley. Despite a stronger second half, it was too little, too late. Losing the series to the winless Missouri Tigers sealed their fate. As expected, a few key players—LaViolette, Justin Lamkin, and Kaeden Kent—all ranked in ESPN's Top 250 MLB prospects, are likely headed to the draft. But it's not just current players whose futures are uncertain. Five incoming freshmen and transfer Maddox Latta also have MLB interest. Coach Earley enters year two needing significant help and, like the rest of us, will have to wait to see how his roster shapes up in the coming weeks. Here's how to watch the 2025 MLB Draft unfold day-by-day: 2025 MLB Draft Round 1-3 2025 MLB Draft Round 4-20 Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions. Nebraska misses out on linebacker Calvin Thomas after he commits to North Carolina
Class of 2026 four-star Nebraska football linebacker target Calvin Thomas committed to North Carolina on Saturday. He made the announcement on social media. Thomas is the No. 26 overall linebacker in the 2026 class and the No. 45 overall player in his class from the state of Texas, according to the On3 recruiting rankings. Thomas visited Nebraska most recently on June 13 for an official visit. This is certainly a disappointing recruiting loss for the program. Thomas would have been a great addition to the linebacker room. He recorded 69 tackles, seven sacks, and an interception last season, according to statistics from Currently, the 2026 Nebraska football recruiting class ranks No. 47 overall and No. 15 in the Big Ten. They have a total of 12 commitments, according to the On3 recruiting rankings. This has the makings of a smaller recruiting class. The Huskers were once considered a favorite for Thomas, but ultimately the Tar Heels prevailed. Nevertheless, the Huskers have a solid stable of linebackers, both currently on the roster and for the future.
