Vidarbha to have Rs10,000Cr Orange Economy in a Decade: Gadkari

Time of Indiaa day ago
Nagpur: Union minister
Nitin Gadkari
on Saturday projected that Vidarbha is on track to develop a Rs10,000-crore orange-driven economy within the next decade. Speaking at the inauguration of the secretariat building and incubation centre of the Indian Council of Technical Research and Development (ICTRD), Gadkari stressed on the transformative role of technology, startups and innovation in boosting the region's agriculture and rural economy.
Highlighting the successful integration of Spanish technology in orange cultivation, the minister said, "Farmers in Vidarbha have already begun to witness a significant rise in yield. In Valencia, farmers produce 25 to 30 tonnes of oranges per acre, while here we barely manage 4 tonnes. By adopting their model, we can significantly increase productivity and build an orange-centric economy."
Gadkari further emphasized the importance of high-tech agriculture, rural innovation and AI-led farming solutions.
"I first test every machine on my farm before recommending it to others. We've used agro innovations to increase onion yield in my farm in Dhapewada," he said.
Pointing to the success of pilot projects like the Baramati AI model in agriculture, he called for similar application in Vidarbha's orange cultivation. He revealed that a farmer business school from Valencia is also collaborating on knowledge transfer to the region.
Referring to Vidarbha's mineral richness and untapped resources, Gadkari said, "Seventy-five percent of Maharashtra's minerals are in Vidarbha, yet we still depend on imports. Out-of-the-box thinking and community-centric research are crucial."
He urged youth to shed dependence on the government and build startups that convert knowledge into wealth. "India now has over 1.8 lakh startups. We must become job creators, not job seekers.
Startups are the biggest weapon of development," he said, citing successful innovations like the Buldhana pattern of lake construction, and rice straw-based CNG production.
Gadkari also mentioned upcoming initiatives like a lithium-ion battery plant and the proposed Global University of Logistics and Skill Development on 100 acres in Butibori. "Skill training must be Vidarbha-centric. If NMC had thought of building dedicated marketplaces five years ago, vendors wouldn't be on the streets today," he remarked, also taking a dig at the civic body for failing in basic tasks like garbage collection.
"Futuristic technologies must be practically implemented. AI, info-tech and biotech can all contribute to a better tomorrow — but only if backed by local talent and grassroots effort," the minister added.
Gadkari also said that he would soon be starting a state-of-the-art International School in Nagpur. The school has been conceptualized by his daughter-in-law after a thorough study of some of the finest school of the country.
Former MPs Ajay Sancheti and Vikas Mahatme, former mayor Nanda Jichkar and member secretary of ICTRD Ketan Mohitkar were also present at the occasion.

Chirag Paswan Declares He Will Contest All 243 Seats In Bihar Elections

Saran: Claiming that there was a "conspiracy" to thwart his foray into Bihar politics, Union minister Chirag Paswan on Sunday asserted that he would, nonetheless, contest the upcoming assembly polls in the state. The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) president, who is a junior NDA partner in the state, made the statement at a rally in Saran district. "I want to take Bihar to new heights. I visualise a future in which our boys and girls will not need to go outside in search of greener pastures; rather, people from other states will come here in search of better education and employment opportunities," said Mr Paswan. He claimed that his passion made many people uneasy. "These people are content with having secured their own future, and they worry about my vision of 'Bihar First, Bihari First' catching the public imagination. So they are involved in a conspiracy to hinder my involvement in state politics. They are trying to create confusion in the minds of the people by asking whether Chirag Paswan will contest the assembly polls himself," Mr Paswan. "I want to put an end to such designs by proclaiming, from this glorious land of Saran, yes, I will contest the assembly polls. I will contest in all 243 seats. Every segment will see Chirag Paswan fighting with full intensity," said the 42-year-old, who has been denying that he had his eyes on the chief minister's chair. He, nonetheless, voiced "concern" over incidents like the murder of top industrialist Gopal Khemka a couple of days ago, and said it raised doubts over the ability of the Nitish Kumar government "which we support and which has so far enjoyed a reputation for good governance". "The upcoming elections are crucial. After winning these, we shall strive to create an atmosphere in which people can step out of their homes at any time without fear and security concerns," said Mr Paswan. He also appeared peeved at his estranged uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras getting a toehold with the offer of entry into the opposition INDIA bloc. Without mentioning the younger brother of his late father Ram Vilas Paswan by name, he recalled, "I was expelled from my own party and made to vacate my own house". Mr Paras had split late Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party in 2021, leaving Chirag, the then national president, isolated, and grabbed a berth in the Union cabinet. Before he was redeemed in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls of 2024, Chirag had to suffer the ignominy of vacating the 12, Janpath bungalow, that his late father had occupied for several years and which also served as the LJP office. The BJP's decision to make peace with Chirag had caused Paras to resign from the Union cabinet ahead of the Lok Sabha polls and, in April this year, quit the NDA. Chirag Paswan also trained his guns at RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav by mocking the 'Chhatra Yuva Sansad' drive, where free pens are being distributed among the youth. "Those who had snatched away people's land with the promise of jobs are now distributing pens," said Mr Paswan, in an obvious reference to the railway scam involving Mr Yadav's father, Lalu Prasad, the RJD president. The Union minister also said, "I am fully in support of Bihari youth's demand for a domicile policy. The rights of our young men and women must be protected. But it must be pointed out that the domicile policy, brought in 2006, was scrapped in 2023, when the RJD was sharing power, its de facto leader was the Deputy Chief Minister, and another senior leader was the education minister." Mr Paswan also referred to the 'inheritance tax' proposed by the Congress, an RJD ally, in its manifesto for the Lok Sabha polls, and urged the people to be wary of the opposition coalition.

World on brink of third World War, warns Nitin Gadkari amid global conflicts

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday expressed serious concern over the escalating global tensions, warning that the world is edging closer to the possibility of a third world war. Gadkari made the remarks while speaking at a launch of the book 'Beyond Borders' in Nagpur.'There is an atmosphere of conflict around the world - between Israel and Iran as well as the war between Russia and Ukraine,' Gadkari stated. 'The situation is such that there is a possibility of a third world war anytime in the backdrop of these wars.'advertisementThe union minister also highlighted the changing nature of modern warfare ands pointed to the increasing reliance on technology, particularly drones and missiles, which he said has rendered traditional military equipment like tanks and fighter jets less relevant. 'Due to the increasing technology of war, the dimensions of war have changed, and the use of missiles and drones has increased in the war, due to which the relevance of tanks and other types of aircraft is decreasing. Amidst all this, it has become difficult to protect humanity. Missiles are often fired at civilian settlements,' Gadkari also cautioned that although it may be uncomfortable to say, the current trajectory of international affairs appears to be moving 'slowly towards destruction.''This has created a serious problem, and all these issues need to be discussed at the global level. It would not be right to say this, but this path is slowly moving towards destruction,' he added.- EndsTune InMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Maharashtra#Nitin Gadkari

Trump To Send Tariff Letters Today, Warns BRICS Allies Of 10% Additional Levies

Last Updated: Trump previously announced plans to send trade letters to 12 countries outlining the new reciprocal tariff rates set to take effect on August 1. US President Donald Trump has said he will send the first set of tariff letters, including trade deals, to several countries, which are expected to include new reciprocal tariff rates that will take effect from August 1. Trump's first set of tariff letters would be sent to various trade partners at 12 pm ET (9:30 pm Indian time) on Monday, he said, amid high-stakes trade talks with several nations, including India. 'I am pleased to announce that the UNITED STATES TARIFF Letters, and/or Deals, with various Countries from around the World, will be delivered starting 12:00 P.M. (Eastern), Monday, July 7th. Thank you for your attention to this matter!," he said on his Truth Social platform. The US president had earlier said he would send formal letters to 12 countries, without naming them. The reciprocal tariffs, announced in April, were supposed to kick in on July 9 after a 90-day pause. However, Trump announced that the imposition would be pushed to August 1 to allow time for ongoing trade talks to wrap up. 'We'll be sending letters out on Monday having to do with the trade deals. Could be 12, maybe 15. And I guess, Howard (Lutnick), I would say, it could be maybe as many as 15 or so, and they'll be going out on Monday and some will go out on Tuesday and Wednesday. And it'll and we've, we've made deals also. So we're going to have a combination of letters and some deals have been made," he told reporters in the presence of Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Trump Threatens More Sanctions On BRICS Allies Furthermore, the US president announced that any country aligning with the BRICS – which includes India, Brazil, China and Russia – will be charged with an additional 10% tariffs. 'Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff," he added. This came after leaders in the 11-member BRICS grouping criticised Trump's tariff policies, saying they were damaging the global economy and disrupting trade. The BRICS declaration also described the US tariffs as 'illegal and arbitrary", and said they could further reduce global trade. India-US Trade Talks India and the United States are likely to make a final decision on a mini-trade deal within the next 24 to 48 hours, CNBC-TV18 reported on Sunday, citing sources, after negotiators recently concluded a round of discussions in Washington. As per the report, the mini-trade deal is likely to have annual quotas for lower tariffs on certain labour-intensive products from India. Certain American agricultural products, such as pecan nuts and blueberries, may be provided with lower tax rates. India has shown reluctance to rush to a trade deal with the US under the pressure of deadlines, with Union Minister Piyush Goyal affirming that national interest comes first. On April 2, the US imposed an additional 26% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods but suspended it for 90 days. However, the 10% baseline tariff imposed by America remains in place. India had sought withdrawal of all reciprocal tariffs, but has reportedly accepted a partial relief for limited agricultural concessions. Sources also told news agency PTI on Sunday that India had 'drawn its red lines' and the ball was now in Washington's court to finalise the deal. tags : donald trump US tariffs Location : Washington D.C., United States of America (USA) First Published: July 07, 2025, 07:56 IST News world Trump To Send Tariff Letters Today, Warns BRICS Allies Of 10% Additional Levies
