New York Giants improved their injury dilemma in 2024, but more is needed
Not all injuries are created equal, though.
As an example, Thibodeaux missed five weeks, but Azeez Ojulari stepped in and produced well while Thibs was out. The same cannot be said for the losses of Lawrence and Thomas, who are both integral parts of their respective lines.
Despite the big losses in 2024, the Giants ranked 13th in Adjusted Games Lost (AGL). This comes from Aaron Schatz in an analysis for FTN Fantasy.
Schatz looked at the injury data for all 32 NFL teams and ranked them based on how impactful the injuries are.
Just as we did on our old website, I've continued to collect data from the NFL's weekly injury reports (with the help of Zach Binney from Emory University) and transformed it into adjusted games lost. We also have the data going backwards, covering the entire 21st century. Adjusted games lost doesn't just add up total injuries. It accounts for both absent players and those playing at less than 100%, and it specifically measures injuries to expected starters and important situational players rather than little-used backups. As such, AGL estimates the impact of injuries on teams and provides a comparable total that often succinctly explains why teams improved or declined from one year to the next. (AGL was created by Bill Barnwell.)
The Giants' 13th overall ranking breaks down to 13th (28.8) on offense and 17th (41.5) on defense, and is a huge step up from their 26th ranking in 2023.
However, they're still a ways off from being a playoff contender if they can't prevent, or at least compensate for, injured players. Last year, six of the eight playoff teams had the lowest AGL.
To address this problem, the Giants made changes to their strength and conditioning personnel. They added Dr. Matthew Frakes as the director of performance nutrition, promoted Drew Wilson to director of strength and Conditioning, and hired Chris Allen and Mark Naylor as assistant strength and conditioning coaches.
Strength and conditioning, as well as nutritional programs, might look a little different for the Giants in 2025, but the idea is to keep as many players healthy as possible. Not only the starters, specifically the impact players and leaders on both sides of the ball, but the bench players have to be available to provide depth. They also have to be able to step in and produce enough to decrease the blow of losing the starter.
Injuries cannot be 100 percent avoided. Football is a physical game, the players are aggressive, and competition keeps everyone playing at a high level. However, if the players' bodies are in the best nutritional and conditioned health possible, injuries that can't be prevented will have less of an impact. Not just because of depth, but because those injuries won't be as serious with the body in top shape.
There's still work to be done, but it seems Joe Schoen's Giants are poised to have a decent season.

Strange Darren Waller Trade Highlights Giants' Failings
Strange Darren Waller Trade Highlights Giants' Failings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Following their surprise playoff victory in the 2023 playoffs, the New York Giants got bold. They knew they needed to find top-notch talent to incorporate into their roster if they wanted to continue to move upward and compete with the best teams in their division and more. Advertisement Could the Giants stick with the likes of the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles? Could they make the moves to do so? Alas, the changes they made had a different effect on the franchise. Since their surprising 9-7-1 season in 2022, and their playoff win in the postseason, New York has seen their win total decrease in major ways. A big part of that has been the lack of production from some of the team's biggest acquisitions. Former tight end Darren Waller is among the best examples of this. Waller played just a single season with New York in 2023 after being acquired from the Las Vegas Raiders. The former sixth-round pick recorded 52 catches for over 550 yards and a single touchdown reception. He also missed five games due to injuries. Advertisement The former Pro Bowler retired shortly after the season. ... very much making it sound like he simply didn't like football anymore. After a year off the field, Waller is back - as a member of the Miami Dolphins. In a strange arrangement, New York traded the 32-year-old this week to allow Waller a chance to return to playing at the NFL level. Waller's retirement and return just highlight how massive some of Giants general manager Joe Schoen's failings during the offseason have been. New York has seen top draft picks be unable to make a positive impact, while acquisitions provide little relief. It's a big reason the team won just three games last year. Advertisement Waller's trade is a relatively good move for the G-Men, as they will get a little something back for a retired player. But the deal jumping into the headlines also highlights the whiff of a trade that brought Waller here in the first place, while also exposing just how much work needs to be done here to get this franchise back in shape to truly compete in the NFC East. And not just for one blip-on-the-radar screen playoff appearance. Giants' Malik Nabers Talks 'Smack' About Commanders Instant Rivalry
Giants' Malik Nabers Talks 'Smack' About Commanders Instant Rivalry originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There was a singular positive takeaway from last year of the New York Giants' 3-14 season. Malik Nabers, the sixth-overall pick from the 2024 draft, had one of the best seasons for a rookie wideout. ... ever. The LSU product recorded 109 catches for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns. Advertisement His reception total is the most ever for a first-year receiver in NFL history. But ... He was the lone star on a bad Giants roster, but he showed enough to excite fans for the future. As he looks back on his first season in the league, Nabers is acknowledging - probably eith pride - that he was not immune to the dreaded "Welcome to the NFL" moment. In the case of the LSU product, his "NFL moment" came courtesy of the Washington Commanders in Week 2. "I ran like a shallow (cross), it was like third and 4, I think, third and 5, I ran the shallow, I caught the ball and I was going up the field on the right sideline, and one of the linebackers he came and hit me," Nabers told Dale Earnhardt Jr., in an episode of "Taking Laps with Dale Jr. "I seen him (Luvu) in my peripheral, but it's like I thought he was farther than what I expected. Advertisement "He smacked me, I ain't gonna lie. It looked harder than it seemed. He hit me, I popped right up, and I was like 'OK, alright, now I'm in the league.'" Call it an "instant rivalry'' born. Luvu is one of the most physical linebackers in the league and enjoyed an All-Pro season with the Commanders. His "smack'' on Nabers showed the rookie how fast each player is in the NFL. ... And how physical the game can be. Nabers was perfectly fine after the hit. He shrugged off the big blow with one of the greatest receiving years for a rookie in league history. ... catching 10 passes for 127 yards and his first NFL touchdown. Advertisement His development should only improve as he gets further acclimated to the game as the Commanders - who had no answer for Nabers - probably remember all the details of this day as well as he does. Analysts Are Quickly Changing Their Minds About 49ers' Season in 2025
Analysts Are Quickly Changing Their Minds About 49ers' Season in 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Francisco 49ers suffered through a horrible 6-11 mark last season and finished last in the competitive NFC West. Advertisement The 2024 season was plagued by poor play at key positions, but also a ton of injuries. That's why health is being cited as a key for the 49ers to get back on track in 2025, along with top-tier players performing like they have during more successful seasons. CBS Sports' Charles Davis noted a weak division as the reason he thinks San Francisco could have a rebound year. 'I know this might be a little bit controversial. I feel like people have taken the 49ers and said their best days are behind them, but I'm BUYING it," Davis said when asked whether he would buy or sell the team's chances of winning the division. "Because I think the NFC West is out there for whoever wants to go it, and I'm counting on these 49ers to have a much better health this season than last season.' Advertisement FOX Sports' Joy Taylor agrees. 'I think we're writing the Niners off a little too soon. I think they're going to look very different this year. Which apparently offended everyone," Taylor said on "Speak" on FS1. "I don't know, I can't keep up. Snowflakes out here get offended by everything.' One major reason to be optimistic is the return of a hopefully healthy Christian McCaffrey, who recently commented on his approach to his recovery in the gym. "I think this offseason I spent a lot of time kind of building back a base, starting from scratch," McCaffrey said. "So, a lot of it was rehab, and I wanted to put myself in a position where I didn't miss a day of OTAs and I could practice, play football again, be healthy and not miss a day. And I did that, and now we can kind of kick back up the training again. But I feel great. Advertisement "I've had a lot of people tell me as you get older you need to do less. I think there's a middle ground with that statement. For me, it's kind of a constant evaluation of where your body's at and what you need."
