Delhi has started a large-scale civil defence mock drill at 55 locations across the city from 4 pm on Wednesday, as part of the nationwide exercise ' Operation Abhyaas '.The drill, directed by the central government, is designed to prepare citizens and authorities for possible emergency situations following rising tensions with Pakistan.Officials said the exercise will simulate different hostile scenarios, including air raids, fire breakouts, and search and rescue operations. Sirens are being sounded across all 15 police districts, and residents may notice increased police presence and activity in several areas. The Ministry of Home Affairs has instructed all states to carry out similar drills due to "new and complex threats" following the Pahalgam terror attack. On Tuesday, Delhi Police stepped up security by raising barricades at key locations like Connaught Place and near Parliament. They also brought in Long-Range Acoustic Devices (LRADs), which can transmit messages over distances of up to one kilometre. These devices will help in crowd control and emergency announcements.Officials have selected five key sites in each of Delhi's 11 revenue districts, including markets, schools, residential colonies, government offices, and hospitals.Around 2,000 civil defence volunteers and 1,200 trained disaster response workers known as 'Aapda Mitras' are involved in the drill.Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said Delhi is 'fully prepared' and that all actions are being taken as per central government guidelines.Officials confirmed that the mock drills will continue over the next two weeks and will cover the entire city.In addition, 650 schools across Delhi are taking part. Students and teachers are being trained on how to respond during emergencies such as blackouts or air raids.Videos and training materials have also been shared with schools and the public.Police have increased day and night patrols, especially at popular public places like India Gate, Janpath, Connaught Place and Gole Market. A coordinated response involving the fire department, health services, MCD, civil defence, and other agencies has been planned.Safety shelters have been identified, and the government is testing how quickly departments can respond during a crisis. Delhi govt to launch month-long cleanliness campaign in August: CM Gupta
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday announced that the government will launch a month-long campaign, "Delhi's Freedom from Garbage Cleanliness Drive," from August 1 to mark India's Independence anniversary. The special drive will run from August 1 to 31, according to a statement. Gupta announced that on July 29, a major meeting would be held at the Civic Centre, where ministers, MPs, councillors and association representatives would finalise responsibilities to ensure the smooth execution of the campaign. She appealed to the citizens of Delhi to actively participate and help make the city clean and hygienic. To ensure the campaign is carried out effectively, all departments of the Delhi Government will contribute. The drive will also involve Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), market associations, school and college students, and other institutions, said an official statement. To encourage public participation, a dedicated online portal will be launched, the statement said. At a high-level meeting held on Friday to review preparations for the "Delhi's Freedom from Garbage Cleanliness Drive", Gupta stressed the importance of coordinated efforts. The meeting was attended by Urban Development and Education Minister Ashish Sood, Chief Secretary Dharmendra, and senior officials from the Urban Development Department, PWD, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, NDMC, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and other key departments. Gupta stated that August is celebrated as the month of India's Independence, and the government has resolved that this August, Delhi will achieve "freedom from garbage". She added that with extensive public participation and strong inter-departmental coordination, the campaign would be implemented so effectively that citizens would truly feel the capital has achieved freedom from garbage. The campaign will place particular focus on schools, government offices and hospitals, with targeted efforts to clear long-accumulated waste and unused items from storerooms. It will also cover vegetable and fruit markets, industrial areas, bus terminals and depots. All ministers of the Delhi Government, MLAs, MPs and municipal councillors will participate in the campaign and run initiatives to increase citizen involvement, the statement added. Gupta also informed that special programmes under the "Freedom from Garbage" campaign would be held every Saturday and Sunday throughout August. Alongside wide publicity through multiple channels, a dedicated online portal will allow residents to upload 'before and after' photographs of cleaned sites to showcase their contribution. She stressed that particular attention would be given to slum areas, unauthorised colonies and informal settlements, ensuring that a significantly higher volume of waste is collected and disposed of compared to normal days. Appealing to the people of Delhi, she said that by participating, they would not only help free the city from garbage but also reinforce Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision that a nation can only become truly clean when every citizen accepts personal responsibility. She emphasised that cleanliness is not merely a government initiative but a civic duty. Ashish Sood said that through the drive, the city would send a strong message to the nation that the people of Delhi are committed to such initiatives. He said that school and college students would play a crucial role in spreading awareness and mobilising citywide participation. He also mentioned that the government is considering recognising and rewarding those who share their photographs on the official portal.

Parliament set to run smoothly as govt, opposition reach deal on Operation Sindoor
New Delhi: The Parliament is expected to run smoothly next week starting Monday as the ruling and Opposition sides reached an agreement over taking up a special discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor on Monday in the Lok Sabha and the next day in Rajya Sabha. Defence minister Rajnath Singh is likely to initiate the discussion in the lower house and home minister Amit Shah and external affairs minister S Jaishankar are expected to speak. Within NDA circles, it is being expected that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may speak on this issue of national security and turn up the heat on the Opposition, which looks to corner the government over alleged intelligence failures and US President Donald Trump's claims of mediating a "ceasefire" between India and Pakistan. There are indications that leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi may also speak. In the Rajya Sabha, leader of House JP Nadda is likely to speak while several other NDA leaders, including JDU chief Sanjay Jha might also speak. Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday blamed the Opposition for the washout of the first week of the Monsoon session , accusing it of not allowing Parliament to function despite the government agreeing to its demand for a discussion on these issues right from the session's start. Asked about the Opposition's demand that Parliament discuss the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, he said all issues cannot be taken up at once and the government will take a call on other matters gradually. One has to follow the rules guiding discussion in Parliament, he said, when asked about the Opposition's insistence. With the electoral rolls revision exercise being seen in the government circles as the Election Commission carrying out its mandate, the possibility of a discussion on the contentious issue is slim, sources said.
