Delhi mock drill time today: Full schedule, areas covered, and what to expect during the city-wide emergency exercise
Delhi has started a large-scale civil defence mock drill at 55 locations across the city from 4 pm on Wednesday, as part of the nationwide exercise ' Operation Abhyaas '.The drill, directed by the central government, is designed to prepare citizens and authorities for possible emergency situations following rising tensions with Pakistan.Officials said the exercise will simulate different hostile scenarios, including air raids, fire breakouts, and search and rescue operations. Sirens are being sounded across all 15 police districts, and residents may notice increased police presence and activity in several areas.The Ministry of Home Affairs has instructed all states to carry out similar drills due to "new and complex threats" following the Pahalgam terror attack.On Tuesday, Delhi Police stepped up security by raising barricades at key locations like Connaught Place and near Parliament.They also brought in Long-Range Acoustic Devices (LRADs), which can transmit messages over distances of up to one kilometre. These devices will help in crowd control and emergency announcements.Officials have selected five key sites in each of Delhi's 11 revenue districts, including markets, schools, residential colonies, government offices, and hospitals.Around 2,000 civil defence volunteers and 1,200 trained disaster response workers known as 'Aapda Mitras' are involved in the drill.Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said Delhi is 'fully prepared' and that all actions are being taken as per central government guidelines.Officials confirmed that the mock drills will continue over the next two weeks and will cover the entire city.In addition, 650 schools across Delhi are taking part. Students and teachers are being trained on how to respond during emergencies such as blackouts or air raids.Videos and training materials have also been shared with schools and the public.Police have increased day and night patrols, especially at popular public places like India Gate, Janpath, Connaught Place and Gole Market. A coordinated response involving the fire department, health services, MCD, civil defence, and other agencies has been planned.Safety shelters have been identified, and the government is testing how quickly departments can respond during a crisis. No Demolition Without Pucca Houses: CM
New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta issued orders on Friday to all departments, including the railways and Delhi Development Authority, that no slum will be demolished in the city unless its residents are provided with pucca houses. Gupta said Delhi govt would amend the existing policy on JJ clusters, if required, and even move court to protect the housing rights of slum-dwellers. She added that nearly 50,000 flats built years ago for the economically weaker section (EWS) in outer areas of the city under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission would be renovated for slum dwellers. "The chief minister has announced that these flats will now be handed over to slum dwellers under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban. DUSIB and DSIIDC were allocated Rs 732 crore for housing, which remained unutilised and was to be returned to the Centre. Central govt has now approved their use for the renovation of these dilapidated flats," said an official. Gupta accused the previous govts of treating slum dwellers as a vote bank. "These settlements neither have drinking water nor roads, pavements, proper drainage and sewage system," CM said. AAP Delhi convener Saurabh Bharadwaj said CM and her party were "bluffing" the slum dwellers for many months now. All govt depts under one roof: Plan on for new secretariat bldg
New Delhi: Expressing displeasure over the dilapidated condition of the office of the department of women and child development at Kashmere Gate ISBT, chief minister Rekha Gupta on Friday said it was time that a new, well-organised and integrated secretariat was constructed in Delhi for all govt departments. A suitable location will be identified where the new Delhi secretariat can be set up, enabling all departments to function under one roof, she added. Gupta made the statement at the launch of the 'Delhi Ko Koode Se Azaadi' campaign from the premises of the WCD department. "It is shocking to think how these officials, who are entrusted with ensuring good governance in Delhi, can work effectively in such deplorable circumstances. The ceilings are leaking, the furniture is broken, there are no proper chairs to sit on, cupboards are damaged, and the fans are in such poor condition that they could fall at any moment," she observed. She also expressed concern that the building, which suffered a fire in 2021, has still not been fully repaired to date. MCD launches citywide cleanliness campaign Over 15 major garbage-prone points across eight wards of south Delhi were cleaned as part of the civic body's mega sanitation campaign. These included a 3 km stretch of Aurobindo Marg, IIT crossing, Lado Sarai Chowk, SSN Marg, and the road up to Radha Soami Satsang Beas in Bhati. Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, along with MCD commissioner Ashwani Kumar and MLAs Satish Upadhyay and Gajendra Singh Yadav, picked up brooms to sweep roads and lift garbage as they walked along the major garbage points. CM announces Secretariat revamp, 50,000 flats for poor
The Hindu Bureau New Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday said the time had come for the Capital to have a new integrated Secretariat to house all government departments under one roof as she launched a month-long cleanliness campaign. Addressing officials at the Department of Women and Child Development in Kashmere Gate, Ms. Gupta expressed strong displeasure over the dilapidated condition of the building. 'The ceilings are leaking, furniture is broken, cupboards are damaged, and fans are in such poor condition that they could fall at any moment,' she said, questioning how governance could be delivered effectively in such an environment. 'We will take steps in this direction. A suitable location will be identified for the new Delhi Secretariat. Our officials cannot be left to work in such miserable conditions any longer,' Ms. Gupta said. Housing promise The CM's remarks came after launching the 'Dilli Ko Koode Se Azadi' (freedom from garbage for Delhi) campaign, which will run from August 1 to 31. It aims at making the city cleaner, greener, and garbage-free, with coordination among multiple agencies and active citizen participation. Ms. Gupta also announced that around 50,000 flats, built more than a decade ago in the outer areas of the city under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, will be renovated and handed over to slum dwellers. 'The previous governments never bothered to allocate these flats, despite claiming to work for the poor. As a result, the units became uninhabitable over time,' Ms. Gupta said, adding that these flats will now be provided to eligible slum dwellers under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana -Urban. The CM said departments like the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board and the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation had been allocated over ₹700 crore for the project, but the funds went unused and were nearly returned to the Centre. 'The Centre has now approved their use for the renovation of these flats. Our government will ensure rehabilitation of eligible slum dwellers so that they can be participants in Delhi's growth story,' she said.
