NFL star Stephon Gilmore recalls moment furious Bill Belichick left him in tears with brutal criticism

North Carolina football players: You've been warned.
Head coach Bill Belichick doesn't care if you're a top recruit or, for that matter, Tom Brady. The first-year Tar Heels generalissimo will skewer anyone in front of the entire team for the slightest mistake. And if there's any doubt, just ask former NFL Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore, who was nearly brought to tears during one film session.
'He killed me one day, bro,' Gilmore told The Money Down podcast. 'It was when I first got there.'
The cornerback was New England's big offseason acquisition in 2017, and although he would contribute to the Patriots' sixth Super Bowl win the following season, he had yet to find his footing in Foxboro.
That all changed after an early-season game in which he failed to defend a 'bunch route,' which refers to a tight grouping of receivers along the line of scrimmage.
'I got picked,' Gilmore said, explaining he was bumped off his assignment by another receiver.
Belichick apparently wasn't very sympathetic.
'Bro, he killed me the next meeting,' Gilmore said. 'I almost cried, how he did me. I ain't going to lie to you. I went to the bathroom, like man, bro.'
Of course, there's a reason behind Belichick's tactics, as Gilmore soon discovered.
'I can tell you one thing,' Gilmore said. 'I ain't never got picked again after that.'
Gilmore, who remains a free agent after playing in Minnesota last season, is far from Belichick's only victim.
Even Brady got an earful, as remembered by former teammate and Hall-of-Fame receiver Randy Moss.
'Bill tore Brady's head completely off. Decapitated Brady,' Moss said during an episode of Apple TV's Patriots documentary, 'The Dynasty.'
'He said, "You guys are telling me that my Hall of Fame quarterback cannot complete a five-yard out?"'
Brady, it seems, was a frequent target of Belichick's before their 2020 split.
'When I first got to New England, I was surprised how Belichick had treated Brady,' Patriots wide receiver Donté Stallworth remembered during The Dynasty.
'[He] turns around, he looks at Brady, and he says, "What the (expletive) is this (expletive)?"
'He plays it again, and he looks back halfway, and he turns, and he says, "I can get Johnny f***ing Foxboro from down the street to make a better pass than this."'
Long-time Brady teammate Matthew Slater had similar memories.
Quoting Belichick, Slater said: 'The quarterback play here is just awful. This stinks.'
Slater continued in first person: 'I'm sitting there, I'm sure my mouth is wide-open because I'm like, "That's Tom Brady. This guy has won four Super Bowls." But I think that speaks to Bill, right?
'To him, nobody is bigger than the team. He's gonna coach everybody the same because he feels like that's going to give the team the best chance for success, and honestly he's not worried about hurting anyone's feelings. He really doesn't care. If you're offended, get out, I'll find somebody else.'

Caitlin Clark trolls glamorous teammate Sophie Cunningham over her appearance as injury absence rolls on

Caitlin Clark trolled her glamorous Indiana Fever teammate Sophie Cunningham on Friday night, hours after being ruled out of another game. The Fever announced their star player would once again be missing for Saturday's home game against the Los Angeles Sparks due to a lingering left groin injury. But Clark was clearly not too distraught as she took to social media to jokingly mock Cunningham, who has emerged as the Fever's on-court enforcer in the early stages of this WNBA season. The Fever posted some pictures from the workout earlier in the day, one of which showed Cunningham's hair bouncing up and down as she ran around the court. The picture captured her hair in a bizarre position, leading Clark to reply 'love this hairstyle' while tagging her teammate. On Saturday, Clark will sit out for a fifth straight game and miss her 10th game of the season, including Tuesday's Commissioner's Cup final when Indiana toppled the league-leading Minnesota Lynx 74-59. The Cup final does not count toward the regular-season standings, but nonetheless, the Fever have won three straight games during Clark's absence. Indiana coach Stephanie White said at the time of Clark's injury that it was 'very much a day-to-day thing.' After Saturday, the Fever are off again until a home date with the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday. Clark, 23, sat out five games due to a left quad injury before returning to action against the New York Liberty on June 14. The second-year guard is averaging 18.2 points, 8.9 assists and 5.0 rebounds in nine games this season for Indiana Clark won Rookie of the Year honors and made the All-Star and All-WNBA teams in 2024-25 following a record-setting career at Iowa.

Portugal released a moving tribute video after Diogo Jota 's death, which included highlights of his career and moments off the pitch with the national team. Jota, 28, and his brother Andre, 26 - also a footballer, who played for Portuguese second division side Penafiel - both died on Thursday following a tragic car crash in Spain. His Lamborghini Huracan had a tyre blow out while he attempted to overtake another vehicle on the A-52 at Cernadilla near Zamora - just ten miles over the border from Portugal. The football world have joined together in paying their respects to the Liverpool star, whose funeral was held in his hometown Gomorah in Portugal on Saturday morning. The national team shared a video across their social media accounts, captioned: 'You will always be remembered. Rest in peace, Diogo Jota.' It culminated with a clip of Jota lifting the UEFA Nations League trophy, which he won with Portugal against Spain last month. Serás para sempre recordado. Descansa em paz, Diogo Jota. 🤍 You will always be remembered. Rest in peace, Diogo Jota. 🤍 — Portugal (@selecaoportugal) July 5, 2025 After making his senior debut for Portugal in 2019, Jota made 49 appearances for his country, scoring 14 goals. The details of Jota's crash have been thoroughly documented in its aftermath. Jota's car is said to have rolled and burst into flames, with emergency services unable to save him and his brother. No other vehicles were involved, police said. The siblings were heading to Santander to catch a ferry to Britain after Diogo was advised not to fly following lung surgery, it was reported in his home country. Emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region confirmed the crash and two fatalities at around 12.35am on Thursday. Diogo and Andre's deaths were then confirmed by the Portuguese Football Federation at around 8am. Tributes from all over have poured in since Jota's tragic accident, with the sport's biggest names - such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi - leading the testimonials. The tragedy came just days after Jota married his new wife Rute Cardoso - who he shares three young children with - on June 22. On Friday, hundreds of mourners lined the streets of Gondomar to pay their final respects to Jota at the city's chapel. Fans snaked around the Portuguese principality as the tearful crowd queued to honour the Premier League hero before his funeral. Mourners sobbed and carried roses and national team scarves in homage to Jota, who won the UEFA Nations League with Portugal less than a month ago. Aerial footage showed queues stretching from the small chapel, around the corner to the nearby church where his funeral will be held. Jota's heartbroken wife and parents gathered at a wake and held a vigil at the coffins of the former Wolves striker and his brother Andre. The town overlooking Porto is where the couple met and started dating as teenagers. They married two weeks ago and have three young children. Diogo and Andre's mother Isabel, father Joaquim and their grandfather were emotional on arriving at the chapel. Joaquim hugged several people and was supported by his brother and later raised a hand to mourners as he left with his wife. They returned around an hour later. Portugal's Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also attended the wake along with Jota's agent Jorge Mendes. The President of Portugal, Marcelo de Sousa, came later. The wake got underway on Friday afternoon ahead of funeral mass in the neighbouring church - the Igrega Matriz de Gondomar - at 10am on Saturday. Many big names attended Jota's funeral, including some of his Portugal team-mates and the Liverpool squad. Ex-Liverpool club captain Jordan Henderson and James Milner had joined their former team-mates. Members of Liverpool's hierarchy were in attendance, including FSG's chief executive of football Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, sporting director. Only family and friends are allowed inside the church, however a livestream with audio of the service, lead by the Bishop of Porto, will be played outside to thousands of mourners who are expected to line the streets to pay their respects. Ruben Neves, who played alongside Jota with Wolves and Portugal, and Joao Cancelo both made transatlantic trips in order to attend the ceremony. Liverpool manager Arne Slot, centre, was solemn as he attended the funeral service The coffins of Jota and Andre Silva were brought into the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar Members of the brothers' family carry their coffins into the church ahead of the service On Friday night, Neves and Cancelo had played at the Club World Cup in the United States for Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.
