Singapore calls on Cambodia, Thailand to de-escalate tensions

SINGAPORE: Singapore has called on Cambodia and Thailand to de-escalate tensions through diplomatic means and ensure the safety of all civilians following latest clashes on Thursday. "Singapore is deeply concerned by the clashes and calls on both countries to exercise restraint and cease hostilities," the Foreign Ministry (MFA) spokesperson said in response to media queries late Thursday. MFA said there are no reports of Singaporeans injured arising from the incident and advised them to defer all travel to the border regions. "Singaporeans in Cambodia and Thailand are advised to monitor the news closely, heed the local government's advice and remain vigilant for personal safety," the statement added. Thai and Cambodian troops reportedly clashed early Thursday in a disputed area along their shared border, with both sides accusing each other of initiating the latest confrontation. Tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbours have been rising since May 28, following a deadly border clash near the Preah Vihear area that left one Cambodian soldier dead. – BERNAMA

Be wary of suspicious links received via WhatsApp, says Bukit Aman CCID director

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have opened 26 investigation papers into a scam syndicate that tricks victims into revealing their one-time password (OTP), resulting in losses totalling RM151,000 since January this year. Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the victims claimed they had received a suspicious message and clicked on an embedded link. "Once the victims enter information related to the OTP, there is a risk their WhatsApp accounts might be taken over by the syndicate," he said when contacted on Friday (July 25). Comm Rusdi explained that the syndicate's modus operandi involves sending random messages with links to potential victims. "If the victim clicks on the link and follows the syndicate's instructions to provide certain details, the perpetrators might be able to take over the WhatsApp account," he added. He advised the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling for such tactics. "People should delete suspicious messages or links immediately and verify the source of any URL before clicking on it. Never provide personal details, and always change your password regularly," he said. Recently, suspicious links were being spread online regarding the RM100 additional cash aid for Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme. The link is a prompt for people to supposedly check their Sara status.

Engineer loses RM178,200 in online investment scam

PASIR GUDANG: An engineer lost RM178,200 after falling victim to an online stock investment scam that promised high returns via WhatsApp. Seri Alam district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the 33-year-old female victim lodged a police report yesterday, saying that an investment syndicate had scammed her since March. "The victim was initially attracted after seeing a stock investment advertisement on the Telegram app and followed a provided link. She was promised high profits in a short time. The victim then made 19 transactions into three different bank accounts from March to July, involving a total amount of RM178,200," he said in a statement. Sohaimi added that the victim only realised she had been scammed when she was asked to make additional payments to withdraw her capital and profits. Initial police investigations found that all the bank accounts involved had 21 prior police reports related to investment fraud. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, and also involves the use of mule accounts. "The police advise the public not to be easily deceived by any investment schemes that promise high returns. "Always be cautious and verify the legitimacy of any company or individual offering investments before making any payments. "The public should check with the Securities Commission Malaysia, avoid trusting promises of quick riches, and use the Semak Mule portal to verify suspicious accounts before any transactions,".
