Sabah govt prioritises local talents on Borneo.TV, says official
KOTA KINABALU (July 7): The Sabah state government remains committed to supporting local influencers, creative industry players and artists by providing them with a dedicated platform to showcase their talents to the world through the newly launched Borneo.TV.
Chief Coordinating Officer of the Sabah Maju Jaya Secretariat, Datuk Rosmadi Datu Sulai, said the government is always ready to engage with local content creators, industry stakeholders and artists to discuss issues and strengthen the state's creative ecosystem.
'The state government's doors are always open to meet influencers, industry players and local artists to discuss any arising matters and to further improve Sabah's creative industry,' he said in a statement today.
He stressed that claims suggesting local creative talents are being sidelined are unfounded, as the government continues to prioritise their involvement in state initiatives like Borneo.TV.
'Sabahan talents, especially influencers, industry players and artists, are our priority to be featured on Borneo.TV, which will serve as a new streaming platform to highlight our people, voices and culture on the international stage,' he said.
Rosmadi urged local creative talents to seize this 'golden opportunity' to share Sabah's stories, successes and unique attractions with audiences around the globe.
'This is the time for our local talents to fully utilise Borneo.TV to tell Sabah's stories and showcase what makes our state special, attracting global viewers,' he said.
He added that Borneo.TV would not only open doors for local artists but also benefit Sabah's homegrown production companies, who can become content providers for the platform.
'With this platform, Sabahan production companies themselves can benefit greatly as content providers. Now is the time to produce high-quality works that can reach international audiences through Borneo.TV,' he said.
Launched by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor on 1 July, Borneo.TV carries the slogan 'Cerita Sabah di Mata Dunia' (Sabah in the Eyes of the World). The platform aims to deliver authentic content, original documentaries, arts, culture and the breathtaking natural beauty of Sabah through a modern, flexible and globally accessible digital channel.
'This initiative will also help the state government build high-quality human capital in digital broadcasting and streaming among our local youth,' Rosmadi added.

200 share Kaamatan joy in UK celebration

Kota Kinabalu: Some 200 guests took part in the Kaamatan celebration organised by the Sabahan Abroad UK (Sauk), which was held at Old Basing Village Hall in Hampshire, United Kingdom. Themed 'Kaamatan for Everyone', the event brought together Sabahan families and friends from across the UK, as well as guests from France, Norway and Germany. Their presence added warmth and strengthened the bonds of a growing diaspora community there. Sauk, a non-profit organisation active for nearly a decade, aimed at uniting Sabahans living in the UK through cltural events, friendship and heritage preservation. With an estimated 5,000 Sabahans residing in the UK, including professionals, students, and second-generation Sabahan-British, Sauk continues to build a sense of home away from home. The day-long celebration featured traditional games like 'mimpulos' (arm wrestling) and 'tarik tali' (tug-of-war), a lucky draw for charities in Sabah as well as a lavish spread of Sabahan and Malaysian cuisine, including bambangan, tuhau, hinava, basungan and a variety of Malaysian pastries. Guests were welcomed with Lihing shots (rice wine), produced by Nelda Hendon, who also demonstrated the art of Lihing-making. Cultural highlights included the Momokis ritual performed by Jennifer Lasimbang, the Magavau chant led by Olga George Kiloh, a Huminodun sketch directed by Savillah Angell, and a poem reading by Alfred Raymond Lee. The Kulintangan dance crew, led by Jessie Roberts, delivered captivating performances, while the evening's Magagung session, led by Hayden Hansanon, a student from Penampang, captured the Kaamatan spirit. A key moment was the Unduk Ngadau pageant, where five young women of Sabahan heritage – Mia, Anya, Cami, Maya, and Clara – graced the stage with pride and poise. Mia Ming-Steel was crowned Sauk Kaamatan 2025 Unduk Ngadau, earning admiration for her cultural pride and grace. The event also received personal greetings from Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Haji Hajiji Haji Noor and Sabah Tourism Board Chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, recognising the community's efforts in preserving and promoting Sabah's heritage abroad. Now in its eighth year, Sauk's Kaamatan celebration continues to grow in scale and significance, serving as a bridge between generations and geographies.
