'Rahul Gandhi has always insulted OBC': BJP fires back after '2nd Ambedkar' remark; accuses Congress of mocking backward community
NEW DELHI: BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia on Saturday launched a sharp attack on Rahul Gandhi and the Congress, accusing it of repeatedly insulting the other backward classes (OBC) community, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who also belongs to the same category.
He also branded Congress as the 'most corrupt party' for idealising leaders facing scam allegations.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, Gaurav Bhatia said, "The most corrupt party held a conference on the OBC society yesterday. Rahul Gandhi himself has always insulted the OBC community and the Prime Minister, who comes from the OBC community. There are many serious charges against him, including corruption, and he is out on bail."
The BJP leader also questioned Rahul Gandhi's endorsement of leaders like Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah and former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel, both of whom he claimed are facing corruption allegations.
"Rahul Gandhi said that your ideals are sitting here. According to Rahul Gandhi, that ideal is Siddaramaiah, who is accused of the Muda scam. Bhupesh Baghel and his son are accused of many scams... The government has resolved to make the country corruption-free, but Rahul Gandhi says that those who are corrupt have the qualities to become leaders," he added, as quoted by ANI.

The BJP's remark came a day after the Congress organised the 'Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan' at Delhi's Talkatora Stadium. The event was inaugurated by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and concluded with Rahul Gandhi's keynote address.
During the event, Kharge reiterated the Congress party's demand for a nationwide caste-based census and the removal of the 50 per cent cap on reservations. He also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of denying rights to backward communities and misleading the country.
In his speech, Rahul Gandhi admitted that not conducting a caste census during the UPA government was a mistake and expressed his resolve to correct it. He said he had earlier failed to fully understand the issues faced by the OBC community, unlike those of Dalits, tribals, and women.
"I think about my work, where I did well and where I fell short, and I see two to three things. Land Acquisition Bill, MNREGA, Right to Food, Tribal Bill, and Niyamgiri struggle- all these things I did well.
As far as the issues of tribals, Dalits, and women are concerned, I should get good marks there. I did good work," he said, as quoted by ANI.
Earlier in the day, Congress leader Udit Raj said that Rahul Gandhi will prove to be the "second Ambedkar" for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) if they listen to what he said during the Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan.
Raj compared Rahul Gandhi to Babasaheb Ambedkar and said that the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) must support the statements made by the LoP.
"Caste census in Telangana is an X-ray of society. Rahul Gandhi aims to replicate it nationwide. His views are visionary. If Dalits and backward classes come forward, our economy will boost. The inequality that prevails in society will be reduced. If OBC understands what Rahul Gandhi said, he will prove to be the second Ambedkar for them," Raj told ANI.

Responding to Udit Raj's remarks, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya accused Congress of hatching a conspiracy to diminish Ambedkar's legacy. "Congress is now worried about finding another Ambedkar. But the country knows how Congress betrayed Dr Ambedkar and repeatedly insulted him, which is recorded in history," he wrote on X.
Malviya also took a swipe at Rahul Gandhi and said he could "never become anything, except a historic failure."
"The question is — why isn't Congress searching for another Nehru? Because this effort is a conspiracy to diminish Dr Ambedkar's legacy and greatness," Malviya wrote.

As farmers across the state staged protests over an alleged shortage of urea and reports of fake agricultural inputs surfaced, the state BJP on Sunday accused the Congress-led government of negligence and demanded immediate action against companies distributing counterfeit seeds and fertilisers. Companies supplying fertilizers and seeds are engaging in the despicable act of sabotaging agricultural activities by providing fake seeds to the enthusiastic farming community that is expecting a good harvest in the backdrop of a promising monsoon this time,' Vijayendra said. He demanded the registration of criminal cases against such firms and called for a dedicated police vigilance team to investigate and dismantle networks involved in deceiving farmers. 'I urge the government to file a criminal case against such companies in this regard and take strict action, and also to take all necessary measures to ensure that the farming community gets quality seeds and necessary fertilizers in a timely manner,' he added. Vijayendra further said the BJP's farmers' wing would stage statewide protests on Monday to express solidarity with the farming community. According to him, the state received over 870,000 metric tonnes of urea from the Centre, but only around 530,000 metric tonnes had reached the market. He alleged that the remaining quantity was being hoarded by middlemen and traders, with the state government turning a blind eye. 'What about the rest? The fear is that somewhere there is some kind of hand-in-glove. Brokers and traders are keeping the stocks; it has to be released. The state government is trying to create an artificial shortage. This will not help farmers and that's the reason farmers are upset,' he said. The BJP leader claimed the early arrival of the monsoon had worsened the situation. 'This time, mother nature has embraced the farmers through a good monsoon, I urge the government to take all possible precautionary measures to thwart any fraudulent attempts that may disrupt the farmers from enjoying its benefits,' Vijayendra said. Agriculture minister N Chaluvarayaswamy, however, pushed back against the allegations, attributing the pressure on fertiliser supply to a combination of early monsoon and increased cultivation. 'The rains have been good for the past one and a half months. The monsoon arrived early, which has caused some challenges as the dams have filled up sooner than expected. Moreover, the area under cultivation has increased by two lakh hectares. Because of these factors, the demand for fertilizer has gone up. I have urged the chief minister to focus on addressing the farmers' issues instead of criticising them, and requested him to write a letter,' he said. The minister said the global situation had also disrupted supply chains. 'I have already written to minister Pralhad Joshi regarding the disruption in urea supply due to the ongoing conflict in Iran. I've also sent letters to all MPs from the state and the Union ministers representing Karnataka. Yet, Joshi ignored these efforts and instead chose to target Siddaramaiah,' he said. 'I didn't expect them to politicise an issue as serious as agriculture. Fertilizer used to be supplied on time, and we had better stock last season. But currently, there are two or three issues at the central level. Due to the Iran conflict, urea supply has been disrupted, and shipments from China have completely stopped. National-level production is also low,' he said, insisting that the Centre must step up. Chaluvarayaswamy sought to reassure farmers. 'I can criticise too, but that's not what matters right now. What's important is resolving the problems farmers are facing. Farmers need not worry. We will ensure they get whatever they need, whenever they need it. Everyone should remain calm. Even if there's a delay of two days, we'll make sure it's delivered by the third or fourth day,' he added.

The first week of disruption in Parliament's Monsoon session is set to give way to a fiery debate on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor from Monday as the ruling NDA and the Opposition prepare to lock horns over the two issues steeped in national security and foreign policy imperatives. The BJP-led NDA and Opposition parties are expected to field their top guns during the discussion in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Sources said Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will be speaking on the issues amid indications that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may make an intervention to convey his government's 'robust' stand against terrorism. Leaders of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, may lead the charge against the government along with Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav, besides a host of other members. The two sides have consented to a marathon 16-hour debate in each House, which invariably stretches longer in practice. Besides its battery of ministers and leaders like Anurag Thakur, Sudhanshu Trivedi and Nishikant Dubey, the ruling NDA is expected to field its members from the seven multi-party delegations that had travelled to over 30 world capitals to present India's case after Operation Sindoor. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday a batch of pleas challenging the Election Commission's decision to undertake a special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. A Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi is likely to take up the matter in which the EC has justified its ongoing SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar, saying it adds to the purity of the election by 'weeding out ineligible persons' from the electoral rolls. The poll panel, while justifying its June 24 decision directing the SIR, has said all major political parties were 'involved' in the exercise and deployed more than 1.5 lakh booth-level agents to reach out to eligible voters, but are opposing it in the apex court. 'The entitlement to vote flows from Article 326 read with Sections 16 and 19 of the RP Act 1950 and Section 62 of the RP Act 1951, which contains certain qualifications with respect to citizenship, age, and ordinary residency. An ineligible person has no right to vote, and thus, cannot claim a violation of Articles 19 and 21 in this regard,' it said. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma's plea seeking invalidation of a report by an in-house inquiry panel which found him guilty of misconduct in the cash discovery row. A Bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and AG Masih is likely to hear the matter. Justice Varma has also sought quashing of the May 8 recommendation by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, urging Parliament to initiate impeachment proceedings against him. In his petition, Justice Varma submitted that the inquiry 'reversed the burden of proof', requiring him to investigate and disprove the charges levelled against him. Alleging that the panel's findings were based on a preconceived narrative, Justice Varma said the inquiry timelines were driven solely by the urge to conclude proceedings swiftly, even at the expense of 'procedural fairness'. The petition contended that the inquiry panel drew adverse findings without affording him a full and fair hearing. A meeting of the Telangana Cabinet will be held on Monday, where the expert panel report is expected to be a key agenda, official sources said. Telangana Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Saturday said the state Cabinet would meet to discuss the Independent Expert Working Group's (IEWG) report on the caste survey and determine the next course of action.
