India-Pak engagement only on battlefield: Abhishek
Abhishek Banerjee
on Monday said India shouldn't engage with Pakistan in any form, including sports, hours before he was leaving for Delhi to attend the monsoon session of Parliament.
"India must not engage with Pakistan in any sphere. The only engagement we should have with Pakistan is on the battlefield, and the only prize worth winning is Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK)," the Diamond Harbour MP said in a social media post.
His comments come a day after the Asia Cup 2025 schedule was announced in which India and Pakistan have been placed in the same group. The rival nations are set to play each other on Sept 14.

Banerjee said calls to keep politics out of sport must stop, adding that attempts to allow sporting ties with a nation allegedly involved in proxy wars wasn't diplomacy but "a bloody betrayal".
"Let justice, not entertainment be our goal. If there is to be a match with Pakistan, let it be fought at the LoC and let PoK be the only trophy we seek," Banerjee said in his post where he also referenced the recent Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives.
"Anything less is an insult to our martyrs and injustice and betrayal to the victims of Pahalgam. Period!" he added.
Later, while speaking to reporters at the Kolkata airport, Banerjee said Trinamool MPs will continue to speak in Bengali in Parliament and accused BJP-governed states, such as Rajasthan, Gujarat and UP, of engaging in systematic violence and discrimination against Bengalis.
Asked for his views on illegal immigration, Banerjee said managing borders falls under the jurisdiction of the Union ministry of home affairs, BSF and CRPF.
He demanded the resignation of the Union home minister and chiefs of the BSF and IB for what he called "repeated security failures".
On the upcoming assembly polls in Bengal, Banerjee said if BJP continues on its current political path, the verdict in the polls will be even more decisive than in 2021 and 2024. "Those torturing the people of Bengal, remember — the lesson in 2026 will be even more severe," he said.

The Srinagar operation began around 11:30 am on Monday, when a joint team of the 24 Rashtriya Rifles and 4 Para unit detected suspicious movement. The bodies of the slain terrorists were handed over to local police, who assisted in their identification. Authorities are now completing legal formalities and preparing for the last rites in accordance with standard procedures. As the situation along the LoC remains tense, security forces continue their vigilant efforts to counter terrorism and prevent further incursions.

NEW DELHI: The Resistance Front, a proxy for the Lashkar-e-Taiba terror group, has found mention for its role in the Pahalgam attack in a UN Security Council (UNSC) report that is expected to bolster India's position against Pakistan-backed cross-border terrorism. The report by the UNSC's Monitoring Team (MT) quoted one unnamed member state as saying that the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir could not have happened without Lashkar-e-Taiba's (LeT) support and that there was a relationship between "LeT and The Resistance Front (TRF). The development is significant as all decisions of the UNSC's 1267 Sanctions Committee, including reports, are adopted by consensus by members of the top body of the UN, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. The Pakistan foreign minister boasted in the Pakistan National Assembly about forcing the removal of references to TRF in the UNSC press statement condemning the Pahalgam attack, they recalled. The mention of the TRF in the MT report is how the world views Pakistan's "lies and deceitful narrative", the people said on condition of anonymity. The MT report said five terrorists carried out the Pahalgam attack. "The attack was claimed that same day by The Resistance Front (TRF), which in parallel published a photograph of the attack site. The claim of responsibility was repeated the following day," it said.

The party has zeroed in on 70 crucial seats that it must win if it is serious about ousting Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) from the state in 2026, BJP sources told News18. These 70 seats fall under different Lok Sabha constituencies where the party trailed by not more than 15,000 votes, according to the 2024 Lok Sabha results. The understanding is that these seats, or most of them, can swing the BJP's way if the party puts the right effort. In 49 out of 70 seats, BJP trailed by less than 10,000 votes. These include constituencies like Naba Dwip, Nakashipara, Sonarpur South, Barrackpore, Dum Dum North, Jagatdal, Rajarhat-Gopalpur, Barasat, Asansol North, and Kolkata-based seats like Rashbehari, Bhabanipur, Kashipur-Belgachia, Maniktala and others. In the remaining 21 seats, the BJP was behind by 10,000-15,000 votes. The list includes constituencies such as Hingalganj, Basirhat South, Howrah North, Shibpur, Kalna, Katwa, Suri, Kolkata's Chowringhee among others. According to sources, in a recently held closed-door strategy meeting, BJP leaders agreed that if campaigning starts with immediate effect and all booth committees are made functional in these 70 seats, the party has a real chance to reap the benefits of anti-incumbency. 'Though there are 92 assembly seats where we have data that shows BJP was ahead of its nearest rival political party in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, many of these seats are traditionally BJP's strongholds. So, the primary goal is not to go for retaining the seats but to ensure the party wins the 70 seats where we were marginally behind. That will change the game," said a BJP state executive committee member. In the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections, the BJP won 77 seats out of 294, while TMC secured a landslide majority with 213 seats.
