Speaking at a rally organised here to protest against price rise, Shivakumar said, "We are taking out this rally to protect the people from the incessant price rise. We introduced the guarantee schemes to lower the burden of price rise on the common people. Ironically, the BJP government at the Centre raised the prices of petrol and diesel the very day the state BJP launched its protest against the state government."
Alleging that the BJP is "exposing its anti-farmer mindset" by opposing the hike in milk prices, he said the increase directly benefits farmers.
"When our Chief Minister earmarked Rs 52,000 crore for the guarantee schemes, the BJP alleged that our government would go bankrupt. However, we have not only successfully rolled out the schemes but are also investing heavily in development works. You blessed us in the last election, and we are committed to repaying that debt. Power is temporary, performance is permanent," Shivakumar said.
Charging the BJP with indulging in "politics of emotion" while the Congress government focused on the "politics of livelihood," he said the people must question the BJP over its failure to control inflation.
Expressing grief over the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, he announced that the Karnataka government had decided to provide an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the families of victims from the state.
Interacting with the media, Shivakumar warned the BJP against "disrupting" Congress events, alleging that BJP workers had "conspired" to show black flags during the protest rally.
'If the BJP continues such activities, we will not allow it to conduct any of its programmes in the state. I urge BJP leaders to rein in their workers, or else we are ready to launch a counter agitation," he said. UNI BDN SSP

She took the extreme step on Saturday over alleged inaction against the professor and suffered 95 per cent burns. In a post in Hindi on X, Gandhi said the death of a daughter fighting for justice in Odisha is a "direct murder by the BJP system". That brave student raised her voice against sexual exploitation -- but instead of justice, she was threatened, harassed and humiliated repeatedly, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said. Those who were supposed to protect her, kept oppressing her, Gandhi said. "Like every time, the BJP system kept protecting the accused - and forced an innocent daughter to set herself on fire," he said. "This is not suicide, it is an organised murder by the system," Gandhi alleged. "Modi ji, be it Odisha or Manipur - the daughters of the country are burning, breaking down, dying. And you? Are sitting silent. The country does not want your silence, it wants answers," the former Congress president said. The daughters of India want security and justice, Gandhi added. The woman was first admitted to the Balasore district hospital and then shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment. She was undergoing treatment in the ICU, Department of Burn Centre, according to officials. "The patient was resuscitated with IV fluids, IV antibiotics, intubated and put on mechanical ventilation. Despite adequate resuscitation and all possible supportive management, including renal replacement therapy at the Burns ICU, she could not be revived and was declared clinically dead at 11:46 pm on July 14," the Department of Burn Centre said in a statement.

Toll for two-lane highways may be halved during expansion phase
In yet another move to rationalise tolling on national highways (NHs), the road transport ministry has proposed to halve the toll during the expansion of 10-metre-wide two-lane highways with paved shoulders to four-lane highways. This has been proposed since commuters don't get the desired service while construction work is underway on such stretches, with the highway width available for use being reduced. At present, the user fee for such stretches is 60% of the normal toll for NHs, even during expansion phase, as they are narrow highways without dividers. If the proposal goes through and gets the green signal from the finance ministry, the user fee will go down to only 30% of normal toll during the construction phase. In the case of widening of four-lane highways to six lanes or expansion of six-lane highways to eight lanes, the chargeable toll is capped at 75% of the normal rate during the construction phase. This is also because commuters don't get the desired service while work is underway on such stretches. This has also been a major issue, with there even being instances of courts taking note of the anomaly. The proposal to give relief to commuters using two-lane NHs with paved shoulders gains importance considering road transport minister Nitin Gadkari has announced a plan to convert 25,000 km of two-lane highways into four-lane highways with an investment of Rs 10 lakh crore in the next two years. The govt will focus over the next decade on the expansion of two-lane and two-lane with paved shoulders NH stretches, as nearly 80,000 km out of total 1.46-lakh-km length of NHs fall under this category. Earlier, to provide relief to commuters, govt had announced the Rs-3,000 annual toll pass scheme, which will allow private vehicles to cross 200 toll plazas annually. More recently, it notified a new rule to reduce the toll rate by up to 50% for structures such as bridges, tunnels, flyovers and elevated sections on highways, which will benefit commercial and heavy vehicles, particularly on sections that have more such structures.
