Liquor Shops On Kanwar Yatra Route To Be Covered With Curtains
The Uttarakhand government is preparing to cover almost 28 liquor shops situated on highways and roads used by Kanwar devotees during their pilgrimage in the auspicious month of Shravan, an official said on Monday.
"The shops, along with their signboards, will be covered with curtains. There is no plan to shut them," Haridwar District Excise Officer Kailash Chandra Binjola told IANS.
He said arrangements were being made to cover the shops with curtains so that religious sentiments of devotees are not hurt and the pilgrimage is conducted peacefully.
"Initial surveys have shown that there are about 28 such shops which fall on the route taken by Kanwariyas. These will be covered before the start of the pilgrimage," he said.
He warned that notices will be issued to shop owners if they fail to comply with the instructions.
The curbs on liquor shops will be in addition to instructions issued by the administration to dhabas and hotels along the Kanwariyas' route to mandatorily display names of owners, food licences, menu and rate lists.
Earlier last week, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reviewed arrangements for the upcoming Kanwar Yatra and also directed officials to ensure a clean, safe and secure pilgrimage for the Kanwariyas.
A host of decisions were taken up at the high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dhami, including the launch of Uttarakhand Kanwar Seva App for public convenience, display of mandatory food licences, and a clampdown on fake and misleading news, among others.
Chief Minister Dhami instructed officials to make preparations on an abundant level, the experience and expertise of which could then be utilised in organising the next Kumbh Mela in the state.
The state administration is set to pull out all stops for ensuring a green and clean Kanwar Yatra along the route and to facilitate this, mobile toilets, water, and special vehicles for waste disposal will be deployed every 1-2 km within a 30 km radius of Haridwar, Roorkee, Rishikesh, and surrounding areas.
The Chief Minister also asked the officials to ensure the availability of health centres, ambulances, and medical staff at every 5 kms.
Officials have also been directed to develop the Uttarakhand Kanwar Seva App, which will provide all details to the Kanwariyas.
The Chief Minister also stated that dhabas and hotels along the travel route must comply with safety standards and mandatorily display food licences.
"It must be ensured that travel regulations and cleanliness are fully adhered to. During this period, traffic should be monitored with the help of drones and AI technology," he said.
The authorities have also been advised to track social media and take strict action against anyone found spreading misleading news during the Kanwar Yatra.
The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage on foot undertaken by Lord Shiva's devotees who fetch holy water from the Ganga during the auspicious month of Shravan. This holy water is then offered to Lord Shiva by the devotees at their native places.

UP: QR code feedback system launched for Kanwar Yatra in interstate meeting
Meerut (Uttar Pradesh) [India], July 8 (ANI): The Uttar Pradesh administration held an interstate meeting with Haryana officials on Tuesday in a major step to ensure the safety and well-being of pilgrims during the Kanwar Yatra. The administration launched QR codes to enhance transparency and accountability at food stalls and dhabas on the Kanwar route. The meeting was attended by the UP Director General of Police, Chief Secretary, and top officers from both states to coordinate efforts for smooth and secure conduct of the pilgrimage. As part of the safety drive, the Food and Logistics Department inspected several shops and food outlets along the Faizabad Road route in Lucknow. Officials destroyed expired food products on the spot and warned vendors against selling substandard items. Pilgrims will now be able to scan the codes and give feedback on food quality using a mobile application. A large number of Kanwariyas travel through Faizabad Road in Lucknow to perform Jalabhishek at temples in Ayodhya, making the route one of the busiest during the Yatra. In light of this, authorities have implemented strict food safety measures. According to officials, the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department directed all districts to ensure that every food outlet operating on the Kanwar Yatra route holds a valid license or registration. These outlets were instructed to display their registration certificates and Food Safety Display (FSD) Boards prominently for public visibility. 'Expired and unsafe food items found during inspections were destroyed immediately to ensure that no harmful products are served to devotees,' the official said. The administration also announced that random checks will continue throughout the Yatra period to ensure compliance with safety regulations and that food and water served to pilgrims remain hygienic and safe. A day earlier, CM Adityanath reviewed the preparations for the Kanwar Yatra. He conducted a comprehensive aerial survey of the entire Yatra route from Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad to Bijnor. During the inspection, he issued clear and strict instructions to officials to ensure seamless arrangements, security of devotees, and full respect for their religious sentiments. The Chief Minister placed special emphasis on maintaining the sanctity of the pilgrimage, ensuring that the faith and enthusiasm of lakhs of devotees remain undisturbed. He directed officials to adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards those attempting to defile food items or engage in similar disrespectful acts. (ANI)

Kanwar Yatra: Traffic diversions to come into effect from July 10 night
In view of the Kanwar Yatra, an elaborate traffic diversion plan has been prepared by police in Meerut to manage the anticipated surge in pilgrim movement. The plan will come into effect from the night of July 10, with a complete ban on the entry of heavy vehicles into city limits and strict traffic management protocols to ensure a safe and smooth pilgrimage, officials said. To oversee the entire Yatra operation, DIG Kalanidhi Naithani, in a meeting with additional state radio officer Vinod Kumar Singh, directed all districts to report updates every hour to the Range Control Room. Several key highways and intercity routes, especially those connecting Delhi, Uttarakhand, and western U.P. districts will operate under rerouted traffic systems to avoid congestion and accidents. There will be 115 four-wheelers and 55 two-wheelers in Meerut, 78 four-wheelers and 102 two-wheelers in Bulandshahr, 48 four-wheelers and 72 two-wheelers in Baghpat, and 22 four-wheelers and 59 two-wheelers in Hapur.

Tourist rush, new hotels, constructions: Uttarakhand to assess ‘carrying capacity' of cities
The Uttarakhand government has commissioned assessments of 'carrying capacity' of cities in the Himalayan state to check ecological imbalances, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said Tuesday. 'Carrying capacity' refers to the maximum number of individuals an ecosystem or specific area can sustainably support without degrading natural resources or causing significant environmental damage. A senior Uttarakhand government official told The Indian Express that 'given the focus of the Chief Minister on both ecology and economy', the state government is intent on aligning its development policies with the ecology in the hill state that sees heavy influx of tourists, and where construction activities can be ecologically harmful if done in an unplanned manner. 'If the carrying capacity of an AC room is 50, but we pack 100 people in it, the AC won't work well. The same principle applies to all urban spaces — be it cities or roads. Therefore, we are getting the carrying capacity of key cities assessed. If some are clearly exceeding their carrying capacity, we will have to see alternative spaces for some activities,' the official said. The hill state attracts streams of tourists both to its hill stations and Hindu shrines, with 37 lakh people visiting these shrines in the summer of 2025. The large numbers often pose a problem, as the ecology as well as the infrastructure cannot cater to them. For Kanwar Yatra, scheduled to take place from July 11-23, around 3 crore devotees are estimated to visit Haridwar to collect holy water from the Ganga to offer at Shiva temples in their hometowns. Add the weekend tourism to Nainital and Mussoorie, and the problem of overcrowding and traffic snarls, apart from new hotels springing up, has drawn attention to whether the infrastructure has got overburdened. In November 2017, then Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat had said that Uttarakhand had faced 39 earthquakes in two years due to ecological imbalances and added that prevention was better than cure. In late 2022 and early 2023, houses in Joshimath in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district began to develop cracks. The scenic town faced the geological phenomenon of land subsidence, or sinking, which is caused, among other things, by excessive extraction of groundwater. Joshimath had seen a lot of construction activities over the decades and the widening of roads, which are believed to have led to the crisis.
