Andrenam, A SpaceX Alumni-Founded Startup, Raises $10 Million in 36 Hours

Andrenam, a startup that uses AI to analyze sonar data from undersea environments, said Monday it raised $10 million in a seed round. The seed round, which was led by First Round Capital with participation from Also Capital, Long Journey, Homebrew, the Colorado School of Mines Venture Fund, and others, closed in just 36 hours. The speed at which the venture raised the money proves just how excited tech leaders are about this new form of defensive innovation, Business Insider says. Learn how you can Andrenam was founded in 2024 by Matej Cernosek, a former SpaceX engineer, and Alex Chu, a former software engineer at real estate platform Qualia. "Our vision is to secure the oceans. We're doing that by building a distributed sensing network — a sonar mesh,' Cernosek told Business Insider. Sonar equipment has long been used to map the ocean and maritime threats, but thus far, the data processing has been done manually. "It's been people in these shacks that have headphones on, looking at a fuzzy screen and analyzing data coming to them in mass,' Cernosek told Business Insider. "We really want to vertically integrate the solution." Up to this point, Andrenam has been purchasing existing hydrophones and pairing them with its new software. However, its ultimate goal is to build its own buoys equipped with its unique technology, which will help lower costs. Trending: Maximize saving for your retirement and cut down on taxes: . To do this, the company intends to grow its current eight-person team, comprised of engineers from SpaceX, Palantir (NASDAQ:PLTR), Anduril, and Saronic, into a 16-person unit. More manpower will allow it to develop the machine-learning-powered software more quickly. Meka Asonye, a partner at First Round Capital, told Business Insider that after seeing Andrenam's pitch deck, he hopped on a flight to meet with the team that same weekend. "Oftentimes these early-stage companies are drawing things on a napkin, and they're years and years away from being ready,' he said. 'The Andrenam team is actually deploying stuff off the coast of California, and the technology already works.'Investors like Asonye are drawn to defense tech companies like Andrenam that have potential for both private and public sector customers, Business Insider said. For Cernosek, the motivation to build a defense tech company is much more personal. His family immigrated from former Czechoslovakia during communist rule, finding a better life in the U.S. "We live in the best country in the world, and this country has done very well for my family — my parents came here with $60 in their pocket,' he said. 'I want to build a generational company that will have a massive impact for the United States.' Garbage-free Bandar is goal: Minister Ravindra

Machilipatnam: Minister for Mines, Geology, and Excise Kollu Ravindra on Thursday stated that his goal is to realise a 'garbage-free Bandar.' He made these remarks at the inauguration of garbage compacting vehicles at the Machilipatnam dumping yard, where he was joined by RTC Chairman Konakalla Narayana Rao and DCMS Chairman Bandi Ramakrishna. Minister Ravindra announced that the work to clear the dumping yard is on track, fulfilling a promise made by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. 'The Chief Minister gave us a promise on October 2 and by this coming October 2, we will remove the dumping yard entirely,' he asserted. He added that plans are being drafted to create wealth from waste. Recalling Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's previous visit to Bandar, where he personally observed the garbage and dumping yard issues, Minister Ravindra highlighted the Chief Minister's commitment to resolving the problem. As part of this commitment, Taruni Associates has been entrusted with solid waste management responsibilities at a cost of Rs 3.75 crore. This initiative will involve segregating wet and dry waste, along with the separation of materials like iron. The Chief Minister has instructed that the entire dumping yard area be converted into a park by October 2. 'We will meticulously follow his directives and establish a park in that area. Local officials are urged to cooperate in this endeavour,' Minister Ravindra stated. Machilipatnam generates approximately 80-90 tonnes of waste daily. To manage this, three compactors worth Rs 3.30 crore have been procured and will be used to clear all accumulated waste. The Minister also mentioned that steps are being taken to establish a waste-to-energy plant locally. He criticised the previous administration for neglecting the municipality, which he claimed led to the current challenges.

Govt likely to amend laws to let firms explore critical minerals overseas

India is planning to amend the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act 2023 to specify the use of funds currently earmarked at ₹5,600 crore for exploring critical mineral mines overseas, according to a top official. The proposed amendments also aim to introduce a tailings policy and modify the royalty structure to facilitate the extraction of critical minerals from waste materials, the official added. These changes are expected to advance the National Critical Minerals Mission (NCMM), which focuses on securing supplies of these strategically important minerals for commercial use. The NCMM has an allocated budget of ₹16,300 crore over seven years, from FY 2024–25 to FY 2030–31, with an additional ₹18,000 crore expected to be invested by Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs). The NCMM also includes initiatives to promote the recovery of critical minerals from tailings through various technologies. 'Critical minerals require certain amendments in the act. We will make some amendments in the monsoon session,' the official quoted above said. The MMDR Act, 1957, has been amended in 2015, 2016, 2020, 2021 and 2023. On 2 August, Parliament passed the MMDR Act, 2023 to attract private sector investment in the exploration of critical and deep-seated minerals in the country. 'If you are mining manganese, you can extract cobalt out of the dump. If you are mining bauxite from red mud, you can extract gallium. Basically, we want to incentivise people to extract all these critical minerals that are associated with bulk minerals. For that, we will have to bring a royalty structure which is attractive,' the official stated. Queries sent to the secretary and spokesperson for the mines ministry remained unanswered at press time. Currently, the act says that whatever royalty you give to manganese should be the same for cobalt. 'People say that they have to invest so much money in processing that they can't give so much royalty. So, we said that we will reduce the royalty,' the official added. Secondly, the mines ministry intends to spend National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET) money on mineral exploration abroad, which is currently meant for mineral exploration activities within the country. 'So, we have to amend the NMET provision in the act to say that, for example, we got land in Zambia, and we are sending GSI (Geological Survey of India) and MECL (Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited) to go and explore. But they don't have money. They are a regular government department. So, we will try to support them through NMET for exploration,' the official said, indicating that there are three or four such amendments in the process. Stockpiling is one of the provisions in the mission, and the ministry is working on some guidelines for it. 'It has to be demand driven. If you stockpile everything, people won't buy. Then you will end up making losses,' the official said. Stockpiling means lending the mineral and dumping it in ore form or raw form. Tailings policy is an overarching policy. In tailings, one is to look for critical minerals. We are now going around, looking for critical minerals in the dumps. 'The amendment will be meant to encourage mine owners to look at their dumps and tailings through various technologies,' the official said.
