Two more Besut MRSM students remanded over alleged dorm bullying

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — Two more students from the Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) in Besut, Kuala Terengganu have been remanded for three days to assist investigations into an alleged bullying incident at the school. According to Utusan Malaysia, the remand order, which runs until Monday, was issued by Assistant Senior Registrar Yuhanis Mohd Roslan at the Magistrates' Court in Kuala Terengganu to allow police to investigate the case under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting. Besut police chief Superintendent Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said the two 15-year-old students were detained at about 4pm yesterday when they turned up with their families at the Besut District Police Headquarters. So far, two Form Two students have come forward claiming they were assaulted by a group of older students in an incident at the school dormitory around 11.30pm on June 24. According to police, the first victim was allegedly forced into a semi-squatting position with slippers placed on his head for about 40 minutes. He was also punched in the stomach and slapped, resulting in pain to his abdomen and right ribs, along with bruising on his back. The second victim reportedly sustained injuries to both legs. Yesterday, five other students aged 15 to 17 were also remanded until tomorrow in connection with the case.

The cruel act that left happy-go-lucky student at $40,000-a-year private school isolated, suffering PTSD and working at a supermarket

A former student is suing his prestigious Melbourne grammar school after he began suffering from a post-traumatic stress disorder after a violent incident on campus. The young man - who has asked to remain anonymous - alleged a fellow student at Caulfield Grammar School poured hot liquid over his head and face in late 2019. 'At 15 years old, I was just settling into a new school with high hopes and big dreams,'the now-20-year-old said in a statement shared with Daily Mail Australia. 'What happened to me wasn't an accident; it wasn't a misunderstanding. It was an act of cruelty, and I was the target. 'The physical pain was horrible, but the emotional damage has stayed with me far longer.' In a writ filed with Victoria's County Court on June 17, the former student listed injuries including post-traumatic stress disorder, scarring, and pain and shock. He said he incurred hospital and medical expenses, as well as claiming a loss of earnings and loss of earning capacity. 'As a result of his injury, the Plaintiff repeated Year 10 and did a non-scored VCE in 2020. Presently, (he) is working in a supermarket,' the writ said. 'I haven't been the same. My mum said I used to be happy-go-lucky, always smiling, always social,' he said. 'Now I rarely go out with friends, and I often feel isolated. I don't trust easily, not after what happened. That one moment changed the trajectory of my life.' He described how, to most people, he looks 'fine' but added: 'When I'm out in the sun, the affected skin reacts, and I also suffer from severe PTSD'. The writ describes at least 15 alleged failings by Caulfield Grammar which the young man's solicitor Aristea Nikolakakis, from Shine Lawyers, has outlined. 'We allege the school was warned about this student's propensity for violence and yet did nothing to protect our client,' she said in a statement. 'We allege our client had been physically threatened by this student in the past and yet nothing was done to keep him safe.' She alleged the school breached its duty of care to the young man by not taking action over the threat and that it had 'ample warning' that he was 'in danger'. 'This wasn't an isolated issue,' Ms Nikolakakis said. 'This was an ongoing situation the school was aware of between the other student and my client, and the school failed to protect my client by intervening when they should have.' The young man said the management of the alleged incident on the school's Wheelers Hill campus is 'what made it worse' and claimed teachers assumed he was at fault because he was new. 'They believed the other student, someone who had been there longer. The school did me a disservice, not only by failing to hold the student accountable in a meaningful way, but also by failing to support me during... and after the incident,' he said. He also said Caulfield Grammar never called an ambulance and that his 18-year-old brother had to take him to the hospital. 'I had strong ambitions, especially in soccer,' he said, adding that a change of rules then stumped his hopes of earning the role of captain. 'That leadership role, that recognition of my hard work, was taken away, just like everything else that year. 'I still wonder what life might have looked like if that incident had never happened.' Daily Mail Australia has contacted Caulfield Grammar for comment.

Police detain two more MRSM Besut students over alleged bullying incident

JERTIH, June 28 — Two more students from the Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) in Besut, Kuala Terengganu have been detained by police in connection with an ongoing bullying case at the school. Besut police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said the two Form Three students were detained at 4 pm yesterday after presenting themselves at the Besut district police headquarters with their families. 'The arrest of the two brings the total number of detained students from the school to seven: six Form Three students and one Form Five student. 'Today, five students have been remanded for three days while the two students who were just arrested this evening will be brought to the Kuala Terengganu Magistrate's Court tomorrow to obtain a remand order,' he said in a statement today. He said the remand order was issued against all suspects to enable an investigation under Section 147 of the Penal Code (for rioting) to be carried out. In a related development, Azamuddin said yesterday evening his department received a report regarding another Form Two student who was also allegedly a victim in the same incident. 'The victim claimed to have been bullied by the same group in the incident that occurred at 11.30 pm on Tuesday at the boarding school's hostel, resulting in pain in both right and left legs.' Azamuddin said in a statement yesterday that a Form Two male student at Besut MRSM claimed he was bullied by several seniors in the hostel at 11.30 pm on Tuesday. He said that based on the report by the victim, he was ordered to crouch in a semi-squat position with slippers placed on his head for 40 minutes, punched in the stomach and slapped, causing the victim to experience pain in his stomach and right rib as well as bruises on the back of his body. — Bernama

Archbishop of Wales stands down after Bangor cathedral scandal

The archbishop of Wales has stepped down after a culture of excessive drinking, sexual promiscuity, bullying, bad language and inappropriate banter at Bangor cathedral was revealed. Andy John, who is also the bishop of Bangor, released a statement on Friday evening after calls for his resignation gathered pace. He said he was announcing his 'immediate retirement today as archbishop of Wales', adding: 'I also intend to retire as bishop of Bangor on 31 August'. Neither his statement nor those from senior colleagues in the Church in Wales made any reference to the scandal that has engulfed Bangor cathedral over recent years. Earlier this week, John issued an 'unreserved and unequivocal' personal apology regarding 'the situation', saying he took full responsibility for failings under his leadership. 'I repent and offer no excuses nor justifications,' he said. Calls for John to resign and for an independent inquiry into the cathedral's culture, the behaviour of clergy, staff and volunteers, and alleged financial mismanagement had been mounting. They came after a review by ThirtyOne: Eight, a Christian safeguarding agency, heard accounts of excessive alcohol consumption, inappropriate language and humiliating banter and a 'culture in which sexual boundaries seemed blurred, and to some … promiscuity was acceptable'. Homophobic comments and an 'unhappy working environment' were also reported. A separate report from a cathedral 'visitation' team recommended the appointment of 'strong leadership' to 'steady the ship', improved scrutiny of governance and finances, and discouraging unkind and inappropriate private communications. According to Tim Wyatt, who writes The Critical Friend, a newsletter on the Anglican church, and who has closely followed events at Bangor, the reports 'pretty much confirmed there was a lot of drinking, sleeping around, backbiting, bullying – basically a whole culture that was completely out of kilter with what a place of Christian worship is supposed to be about'. In addition, six 'serious incident reports' have been sent to the Charity Commission in the past 18 months, four relating to safeguarding and two relating to financial matters. Financial irregularities reportedly include more than £400,000 being spent on new furnishings for the cathedral with inadequate consultation, and £20,000 spent on trips to Rome and Dublin for senior staff. A spokesperson for the Charity Commission said: 'We have opened a regulatory compliance case to assess a number of concerns that have been raised related to Bangor cathedral and diocese, including matters reported directly to us by the charities. We are actively examining these matters with the charities' trustees to determine our next steps. 'As regulator, if we find evidence of wrongdoing, we take robust action using the powers available to us.' Many of the concerns about the cathedral centre on a period when Siôn Rhys Evans was its acting dean – in effect chief executive – while continuing in post as secretary of the Bangor diocese. Both posts are senior full-time jobs, and it is unprecedented for one person to manage both sets of responsibilities and workloads. In another highly unusual move, Rhys Evans – who was seen as a protege of John – was made acting dean only a few years after being ordained as a priest. To be elevated so quickly to a high-profile job was an 'astounding over-promotion', according to Wyatt. In February 2024, Rhys Evans stood back from both roles without explanation. He was absent from work for 10 months, after which he quietly left to take up a new post as dean of a Westminster theological college in Cambridge. On Friday, Westminster college confirmed that Rhys Evans' probationary period was 'unsuccessful' and he had left his job in mid-May. The Guardian has been unable to contact him. Last month, two members of the cathedral's college of priests, Rev Dr John Prysor-Jones and the Very Rev Prof Gordon McPhate, called for an independent inquiry into events in Bangor. 'The reputational damage to the cathedral, the diocese, and the Church in Wales is considerable,' they said in a letter to the Church Times. Ruth Jones, the Labour MP for Newport West and Islwyn, said the church must give a full explanation to members and the public. 'We want openness and transparency in all our church settings and it's really, really important that the archbishop makes clear what has gone on,' she told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast.

Two pupils charged in Pretoria schoolboy's fatal stabbing appear in court

Two Lesedi Secondary School pupils appeared in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate's Court for the alleged premeditated murder of Grade 10 pupil Lethabo Mokonyane. The brutal incident, suspected to stem from bullying, occurred on 17 June outside school premises in Donkerhoek, Pretoria. The accused, wearing balaclavas and absent from school on the day, allegedly attacked and stabbed Mokonyane, who succumbed to his injuries hours later. Two pupils from Lesedi Secondary School made their first appearance in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrates' Court on Friday in connection with the murder of fellow pupil Lethabo Mokonyane. Mlehalinye Montasi, 20, a Grade 12 pupil, and Kgotlhello Mathabathe, 19, a Grade 10 pupil, are charged with premeditated murder for allegedly stabbing and killing Mokonyane. The incident, believed to stem from a case of bullying, took place on 17 June outside the school's premises in Donkerhoek, Pretoria. According to the National Prosecuting Authority, Mokonyane, a Grade 10 pupil, had finished writing his exams when he encountered the two accused on his way to the school gate. '[They] started fighting with him. One of the accused persons apprehended him while the other stabbed him with a sharp object twice in the stomach and on his back,' said NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana. 'Thereafter, they ran away. Mokonyane was then taken to hospital, where he died a few hours later.' According to a report by the Gauteng Department of Education, the two pupils who allegedly stabbed Mokonyane were wearing balaclavas and had not attended classes on the day. Mokonyane's aunt had previously attributed the stabbing to bullying, calling on pupils to speak up when they are being targeted. The court case was postponed to 7 July for the bail application. Mahanjana said the state intends to oppose their release on bail.
